Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Meet clients to understand their brief, budget, site and how the building will be used

  • Study the site, surroundings, local building bye-laws and the National Building Code of India

  • Prepare concept sketches, layouts and 3D models to explore design options

  • Produce detailed working drawings, specifications and schedules for contractors

  • Coordinate with structural, electrical, plumbing and landscape consultants

  • Visit construction sites to check quality and progress against the drawings

  • Obtain approvals from municipal and development authorities and manage project documentation

Where They Work

Most architects in India start in architecture firms, which range from small studios with a few people to large firms working on commercial, institutional and residential projects. Real estate developers, interior and fit-out companies, and engineering consultancies also hire architects for design and project roles.

Government bodies are another major employer. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD), state Public Works Departments, urban development and housing authorities, and the Archaeological Survey of India employ architects for public buildings, housing and heritage work. Teaching, research and heritage conservation offer other paths.

How to Become an Architect in India?

After Class 10

Build a foundation in drawing, Mathematics and visual thinking. Taking up the Science stream in Class 11 and 12 keeps the B.Arch route open, as most colleges need Maths in Class 12.

After Class 12

Pass Class 12 with Maths and at least the minimum aggregate required by your target colleges. Prepare for NATA, JEE Main Paper 2 or your state architecture entrance test, which tests drawing, aptitude and maths.

Undergraduate

Join a five-year B.Arch programme. Studios teach design, history, building science, structures and construction, and a portfolio of design work is built across the years.

Internship and Registration

Complete the practical training period required by the Council of Architecture, then register with the COA. Registration is needed to practise legally as an architect in India.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Many architects take a two-year M.Arch in areas such as urban design, landscape architecture, sustainable design or conservation to move into specialist or senior roles.

First Job

Join a firm as an assistant or junior architect. Learn project delivery on live sites, build software skills in AutoCAD, Revit and rendering tools, and work towards project architect roles.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 in the Science stream (PCM) is the usual route, with Mathematics compulsory for B.Arch admission

  • Students from other streams can be eligible if they have studied Mathematics in Class 12, but must check each college's rules

  • Drawing and sketching aptitude is tested in NATA, JEE Main Paper 2 and most state architecture entrance exams

Minimum Qualification

  • Class 12 pass with typically 50% aggregate marks; relaxations are often given to reserved categories

  • Qualifying score in an accepted entrance exam such as NATA, JEE Main Paper 2 or a state CET

  • To practise as an architect, registration with the Council of Architecture after the B.Arch and required practical training

Scope and Future of Architect in India

Demand for architects in India is tied to urbanisation, housing, infrastructure and commercial construction. As cities grow and older buildings are upgraded, there is steady work in new design, renovation and adaptive reuse. Government programmes such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (housing) and the Smart Cities Mission have created planning and design work in many cities, though demand rises and falls with the property and construction cycle.

Growth areas include green and energy-efficient buildings, digital design through BIM, heritage conservation, healthcare and education infrastructure, and transit-oriented development around metro stations. Architects who combine design with technology, sustainability and project management are better placed for senior roles.

Architects can also work abroad, particularly in the Gulf, the UK, Australia, Canada and the USA. Overseas practice usually needs local licensing or registration, and the rules differ by country, so students planning to work abroad should check the requirements of the destination early.

Architect: Frequently Asked Questions

Is NATA compulsory to get into B.Arch?

Not always. Most architecture colleges in India admit students through NATA, JEE Main Paper 2 or a state-level architecture entrance test. Some colleges run their own selection process too. The accepted exam can differ by state and institute, so check the admission rules of each college you want before you apply.

What is the difference between NATA and JEE Main Paper 2?

NATA is conducted by the Council of Architecture and is held more than once a year, which gives students more attempts. JEE Main Paper 2 is conducted by NTA and is used for B.Arch admissions at many centrally funded institutions, including NITs and IIT Roorkee. Both test drawing and aptitude, so many students prepare for both and confirm which exam their target college accepts.

Can a Commerce student become an architect?

Yes, if they have studied Mathematics in Class 12. B.Arch admission generally requires Maths, so a Commerce student without Maths usually cannot apply. Drawing skill, the aptitude test and a strong portfolio matter as much as the stream. Check the eligibility rules of each college and exam, because requirements vary.

How long does it take to become a licensed architect in India?

The B.Arch is a five-year programme that includes design studios and practical learning. After graduating, you complete the practical training required by the Council of Architecture and register with the COA. Registration allows you to practise legally as an architect, so most people are licensed around six years after Class 12, though the exact timeline depends on the training rules.

How much does an architect earn in India?

Entry-level architects typically earn around ₹3 to ₹5 lakh a year, depending on the city and the firm. Mid-level professionals with several years of experience can earn about ₹6 to ₹12 lakh, while senior architects and principals of established firms can earn well above ₹15 lakh. Earnings rise fastest for those who lead projects, build a strong portfolio or run their own practice.

Do I need to be good at drawing to become an architect?

You need to be comfortable with drawing and visual thinking, but you do not need to be a professional artist. Architecture entrance exams test drawing and aptitude, and B.Arch studios teach sketching, drafting and model making step by step. Most students build these skills through regular practice, and digital tools like AutoCAD, Revit and SketchUp are used alongside hand sketching.
