An Army officer is a commissioned leader in the Indian Army who commands soldiers, plans and carries out military operations, and looks after the training and welfare of the men under them. Officers are commissioned as Lieutenants after training at military academies, and the job combines leadership, physical toughness and responsibility for national security.
Most people enter through one of three routes: the National Defence Academy (NDA) for Class 12 students who have studied Physics, Chemistry and Maths; the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam for graduates; and the Technical Entry Scheme (TES) for engineering candidates. Reports in 2026 also mention a TES entry route for Class 12 students selected through JEE Main. Every route ends with a Services Selection Board (SSB) interview and a medical test.
This page explains how each route works, what an officer earns, which institutions train officers and what to check before you apply. Entry dates, age limits and vacancies change every year, so always confirm details on the official notification.
