Career as a Cryogenic Engineer in India: Work, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A cryogenic engineer designs, builds and maintains systems that produce and handle materials below about -150°C, such as the ultra-cold stages of quantum computers and rocket engines.

A cryogenic engineer designs, builds and maintains systems that produce and handle materials at extremely low temperatures, generally below about −150°C (120 K). The work covers liquefying gases such as nitrogen, oxygen and helium, storing them in vacuum-insulated containers, and keeping sensitive equipment cold enough to work.

This matters across several fields. Cryogenic engines use liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen to power heavy space launch vehicles, MRI scanners depend on cooled superconducting magnets, and quantum computers need ultra-cold systems to run. ISRO's cryogenic upper stage on the LVM-3 rocket is one of India's best-known examples.

It is a specialised choice. Cryogenics is usually learned inside a broader degree in mechanical, aerospace, chemical engineering or physics, and deepened through postgraduate study. The work is hands-on and safety-critical, and it suits students who enjoy thermodynamics, materials and building equipment that actually runs.

What Does a Cryogenic Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Design vessels, Dewar flasks and vacuum-insulated containers that store liquid nitrogen, liquid helium or liquid hydrogen safely.

  • Plan gas liquefaction and refrigeration systems that compress, cool and expand gases until they condense into liquids.

  • Select materials that stay strong and usable at very low temperatures, since many metals and plastics change their properties when cold.

  • Design and test cryogenic pumps, valves and transfer lines, and check for heat leaks that waste cooling power.

  • Run tests on cryogenic hardware, such as the cryogenic test chambers used to prepare satellites and rockets for flight.

  • Monitor pressure, boil-off and oxygen levels, and follow safety procedures for handling cryogenic liquids.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot the cooling systems behind superconducting magnets, MRI scanners, research instruments and quantum processors.

Where They Work

In India, cryogenic engineers mainly work in space and defence-linked programmes. ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre developed the CE-20, India's largest cryogenic engine, which was used for Chandrayaan-3. The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility (ICMF) was set up to produce cryogenic and semi-cryogenic engines for the Indian space programme. Research bodies such as TIFR Mumbai and NISER Bhubaneswar also recruit technical staff for low-temperature and physics research.

Other employers include quantum technology and research groups, which are growing with government support for quantum research in engineering colleges, hospitals and medical equipment makers that service MRI systems, LNG and industrial gas companies that run liquefaction and storage plants, and food, pharma and biotech firms that use cryogenic freezing. News in September 2026 also reported that cryogenic expertise from Vadodara was being used in a global fusion project.

How to Become a Cryogenic Engineer in India?

After Class 10

Choose the Science stream in Class 11 and 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Strong maths and physics are the base for every route into this career.

After Class 12

Prepare for engineering entrance exams such as JEE Main and JEE Advanced for IIT and NIT seats, or the state engineering exams for state colleges. A B.Sc in Physics is another route.

Undergraduate

Complete a B.Tech in mechanical, aerospace or chemical engineering, or a B.Sc (Hons) in Physics. Choose electives in thermodynamics, heat transfer and materials, and look for low-temperature or cryogenic projects.

Scope and Future of Cryogenic Engineer in India

Demand for cryogenic skills comes from several sectors at once. In space, ISRO's cryogenic upper stage on the LVM-3 and the semi-cryogenic engine programme keep the field active, and India is one of a small group of countries with indigenous cryogenic engine technology. In healthcare, MRI scanners, cryopreservation and cryosurgery depend on cryogenic systems. Food, pharma and LNG industries also use the same engineering. Our research did not give hiring volumes, so judge demand through current recruitment notices.

Growth is strongest where quantum and fusion research meet. In November 2025, the Mumbai DST secretary said the government would support 100 engineering colleges in quantum research. A 2026 quantum jobs report and a September 2026 news item on a Vadodara cryogenic contribution to a global fusion project point to more demand for ultra-cold engineering in these areas, though the detailed figures should be checked before use.

Specialists with a master's degree or PhD can also look at research labs, space agencies and quantum programmes abroad, subject to each country's visa and eligibility rules. Within India, the best preparation is a strong physics and thermodynamics base, a postgraduate qualification in a related field, and hands-on exposure to cryogenic systems through projects, internships or NPTEL-based self-study.

Cryogenic Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cryogenic engineer?

A cryogenic engineer designs, builds and maintains systems that work at extremely low temperatures, usually below about -150°C (120 K). Their work includes liquefying gases such as nitrogen, oxygen and helium, storing them in vacuum-insulated vessels, and keeping equipment such as rocket engines, MRI magnets and quantum processors cold enough to work. The role sits between physics, thermodynamics and mechanical or aerospace engineering.

Is cryogenic engineering a good career in India?

It can be, for people who enjoy physics and hands-on engineering and are willing to specialise. Demand links to space programmes such as ISRO's cryogenic upper stages, MRI and healthcare equipment, and quantum research, which received government support for engineering colleges in late 2025. Because it is a niche field, opportunities depend on your degree, postgraduate study and the employers near you, so research current roles before committing.

Which degree should I take to become a cryogenic engineer?

Most people start with a B.Tech in mechanical, aerospace or chemical engineering, or a B.Sc in Physics, and then move into cryogenics through an M.Tech, an M.Sc or a PhD. Some postgraduate programmes take GATE scores for admission. Check each college's current course list, since cryogenic specialisations vary between institutes and change over time.

Is there a separate B.Tech in cryogenic engineering?

Our research did not confirm a standalone undergraduate cryogenic engineering degree in India, so do not assume one exists. Students usually learn cryogenics as a module or elective inside mechanical, aerospace or chemical engineering, and go deeper through postgraduate study. If you find a dedicated programme, verify its recognition and syllabus on the college's official website before applying.

Do I need GATE to work as a cryogenic engineer?

Not always for a first job. GATE matters most if you want an M.Tech or PhD at institutes that use it for admission, such as IIT Kharagpur or NIT Rourkela, which publish yearly M.Tech admission details. Many employers hire engineering graduates directly, but a GATE score can open research and public-sector paths, depending on the employer's recruitment notice.

Can I learn cryogenics online?

Yes, to a starting level. NPTEL hosts a course called Cryogenic Engineering, with lectures on the properties of cryogenic fluids, material behaviour at low temperatures, and gas liquefaction and refrigeration. It is a good way to test your interest. Check the current format and any certificate fees on the NPTEL site, and treat it as a foundation for a degree rather than a replacement.

What are the main risks of working with cryogenic liquids?

The biggest risk is oxygen displacement. One litre of liquid nitrogen expands to about 696 litres of gas at room temperature, which can create a suffocation risk in poorly ventilated spaces. Other risks include frostbite on contact with very cold surfaces, pressure build-up, and fire or explosion. Engineers use insulated gloves, face shields, oxygen monitors and ventilated work areas.

How much does a cryogenic engineer earn in India?

We have not yet verified salary ranges for this role from a dated source, so this page does not quote figures. Pay depends on the employer (a government research body, space agency, industrial company or private firm), your degree and your experience. Check current recruitment notices and salary surveys before comparing offers.
