At a glance

A dentist diagnoses, treats and prevents problems of the teeth, gums and mouth; in India most enter through a BDS degree after Class 12 PCB and NEET UG.

A dentist is a qualified doctor who diagnoses, treats and prevents problems of the teeth, gums, jaws and mouth. In India, most dentists enter the profession through a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and a qualifying NEET UG score.

Dentistry suits students who enjoy biology, like working with their hands and want a stable, patient-facing health career. The work is mostly done in clinics, with a mix of routine check-ups, fillings, root canals, extractions and cosmetic or implant work, depending on the dentist's specialisation.

The road is long and demanding: a 4-year BDS plus a compulsory internship, optional postgraduate MDS study, and registration before practice. Students who plan well, prepare early for NEET and understand the fee and seat options can build a secure career with good options for growth.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Examine patients' teeth, gums and mouth, and diagnose decay, gum disease, infections and other oral problems using visual checks and X-rays.

  • Plan and carry out treatments such as fillings, root canal treatment, scaling and cleaning, and tooth extractions.

  • Make and fit crowns, bridges, dentures and other dental prosthetics, or refer patients to a specialist when needed.

  • Advise patients on oral hygiene, diet and preventive care, and educate them on keeping their teeth healthy.

  • Maintain strict infection control, including sterilising instruments and following safety protocols for every patient.

  • Keep accurate patient records, manage appointments and, in a private practice, handle billing and staff.

  • Explain treatment options and costs clearly, and help anxious patients feel comfortable during procedures.

Where They Work

Most dentists in India work in private dental clinics and hospitals, in cities and towns across the country. Some run their own practice, while others work as associates in established clinics or in multi-speciality hospitals. Corporate dental chains are also a growing employer, offering salaried roles with set hours.

Government roles include dental surgeon posts in public hospitals and dental wings of government medical and dental colleges. Dentists can also join the Armed Forces through the Army Dental Corps, which advertised 37 posts in September 2026. Teaching and research roles are available in dental colleges, usually after an MDS degree.

Scope and Future of Dentist in India

Demand for dental care in India is steady, supported by growing awareness of oral health, a larger urban population and more people seeking cosmetic and implant treatments. Dentists are needed in clinics across cities and towns, and the Army Dental Corps and public hospitals continue to recruit, giving graduates both private and government options.

Dental tourism is emerging as a growth area. A 2026 Economic Times report describes dental tourism as a possible next big healthcare export for India, which could create more demand for skilled dentists, especially those with cosmetic, implant and surgical training. Corporate dental chains are also expanding, offering salaried roles with structured career paths.

Dentistry also offers options abroad. Many Indian dentists practise overseas, but they must clear the licensing examinations and registration rules of the country they wish to work in. Regulatory changes in India, including a new regulator replacing the Dental Council of India, mean students should keep track of current rules as they plan their careers.

Dentist: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I become a dentist after Class 12 without NEET?

For BDS admission in most government and private dental colleges, NEET UG is the main entrance test. Admission is then based on your NEET rank through state and national counselling. Some states have their own rules, so check the admission process of the state where you want to study before you plan your application.

How long does it take to become a dentist in India?

A BDS degree takes 4 years, followed by a 1-year compulsory internship, so the total is about 5 years. If you then want to specialise, an MDS takes around 3 more years. You also need to register with the dental regulator before you can practise independently.

What is the salary of a dentist in India?

A fresh BDS graduate typically earns around ₹3 to ₹6 lakh a year, depending on the city and the employer. Mid-level dentists with several years of experience can earn around ₹6 to ₹12 lakh, and senior dentists or clinic owners can earn ₹12 lakh or more. Income varies widely by location, specialisation and practice size.

Is Maths compulsory to become a dentist?

No, Mathematics is not required for BDS. You need Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Class 12, along with English as a subject. Students who studied PCMB can also apply, since Maths does not affect eligibility for BDS admission.

Should I choose a government or private BDS college?

Government dental colleges usually charge lower fees than private colleges, and seats are allotted through counselling. Private college fees vary a lot between institutions. Compare the total course cost, hospital facilities, clinical exposure and placement or internship options before you decide.

Is dentistry a good career for women?

Dentistry is a practical career that many women choose, because clinic work can offer regular hours and the option to run your own practice. Like any career, it needs commitment and continuous learning. Many dentists also find flexible options in teaching, research or part-time clinical work.

Can dentists work abroad?

Yes, many Indian dentists work abroad, but each country has its own licensing examinations and registration rules. You will usually need to clear those tests and sometimes complete additional training. Start researching the requirements of your target country during your BDS or MDS years.
