Career as an Environmental Consultant in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

An environmental consultant assesses how projects affect air, water, land and ecosystems, and advises companies on clearances and compliance; most enter with a B.Sc or B.Tech.

An environmental consultant assesses how projects and industries affect air, water, land and living things, and advises them on meeting environmental laws. In India, much of this work comes from environmental clearance and impact assessment (EIA) for roads, factories, mines, power plants and real estate projects.

Most people enter with a B.Sc or B.Tech in environmental science or engineering, then add a postgraduate degree or EIA training. Students from Class 12 Science can start this route by choosing the right stream and preparing for the relevant entrance exams.

The hard parts are real: reports are technical and time-bound, field work means travel and weather, and regulatory timelines can shift. Starting pay is modest, and growth depends on skill, accreditation and a strong record of work on approved projects.

What Does an Environmental Consultant Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Screen projects to decide whether an environmental clearance or impact assessment is needed under Indian law.

  • Collect baseline data on air, water, noise, soil, flora and fauna through site visits and sampling.

  • Prepare EIA reports, environmental management plans and application documents for regulators such as the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) or the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).

  • Predict likely impacts of a project and propose mitigation measures and monitoring plans.

  • Coordinate with engineers, architects, lawyers and clients so that environmental conditions are built into project design.

  • Attend public hearings and respond to queries from regulators and local communities.

  • Track compliance with clearance conditions and help clients with environmental audits and sustainability or ESG reports.

Where They Work

Most environmental consultants work for private consultancies that prepare EIA and clearance reports. Other employers include engineering and construction firms, and industries such as mining, power, cement, steel, chemicals and real estate that need clearances for their projects.

Banks and investors also hire consultants for environmental due diligence before lending to projects. Government roles exist at state pollution control boards and environment departments, which recruit through their own exams, and NGOs and research institutes employ consultants for field and policy work.

How to Become an Environmental Consultant in India?

After Class 10

Choose Science, with Maths if you may later take engineering. Build interest through science projects, environment clubs and field trips, and read about local pollution and clearance issues.

After Class 12

Take PCB or PCMB for a B.Sc in Environmental Science, or PCM or PCMB for a B.Tech in Environmental Engineering. Plan for JEE Main or CUET, depending on the course and university you want.

Undergraduate

Complete a three-year B.Sc or four-year B.Tech. Take subjects such as ecology, pollution control, environmental law and GIS, and do internships with EIA firms, labs or pollution control boards.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Consider an M.Sc or M.Tech, usually two years. A postgraduate diploma in EIA or environmental management builds consultancy-specific skills and helps science graduates move into the field.

Licence / Certification

Check whether the work you want needs NABET-accredited EIA coordinator qualifications or similar certification. GIS, ISO 14001 lead auditor and ESG reporting courses also strengthen your profile.

First Job

Start as a junior consultant or field associate in an EIA firm, environmental lab or industry sustainability team. Over two to three years, build experience in sampling, report writing and regulatory submissions.

Scope and Future of Environmental Consultant in India

Demand for environmental consultants is closely tied to projects that need clearance before they can start, including roads, railways, ports, mines, power plants, industrial units and large housing or township projects. As infrastructure and industrial activity grow, so does the need for impact assessments, monitoring and compliance support. Companies also increasingly need sustainability and ESG reporting, which adds work for consultants who can handle both technical and disclosure requirements.

Growth areas include renewable energy and green hydrogen projects, carbon market and emissions work, waste and water management, and climate risk assessment for banks and insurers. Government programmes such as the Green Credit Programme and the National Green Hydrogen Mission are expected to create more demand for environmental expertise, though the exact effect on hiring will depend on policy implementation.

Consultants with an EIA background can work abroad, mainly in countries that require environmental impact studies or have active sustainability reporting, such as the UK, Australia, Canada and parts of the Gulf. Overseas roles usually need local qualifications, work permits and strong experience, so plan this after building a solid base in India.

Environmental Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions

Is environmental consultant a good career in India?

It can be, if you enjoy field work, data and writing reports for regulators. Demand comes mainly from projects that need environmental clearance and from companies that must report on sustainability. The work is steady rather than glamorous, with deadlines, travel and long hearings with regulators. Pay grows well with experience and an accreditation or postgraduate degree, but early salaries are modest.

What is the difference between an environmental consultant and an environmental engineer?

An environmental engineer usually designs and runs systems such as effluent treatment plants, water supply or waste facilities. An environmental consultant advises clients on what the law requires, assesses how a project will affect the environment and prepares the reports needed for approval. Many consultants have an engineering or science degree, and some move between both roles over time.

Which course should I take after Class 12 to become an environmental consultant?

Two common routes are a B.Sc in Environmental Science, which suits students with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, or a B.Tech in Environmental Engineering, which needs Maths and usually entry through JEE Main. Students from PCMB can take either path. Whichever you choose, a postgraduate degree such as an M.Sc or M.Tech and some hands-on EIA or GIS training will improve your options.

Do I need a licence or accreditation to work as an EIA consultant?

For many EIA reports, the consultant organisation must be accredited under the National Accreditation Board for Education and Training (NABET), which works under the Quality Council of India. Individual EIA coordinators in accredited firms need to meet defined qualifications and experience. Check the current NABET criteria before you plan your career, because the rules and categories are updated from time to time.

How much does an environmental consultant earn in India?

Entry-level environmental consultants typically earn around ₹3 to ₹5 lakh a year. With five to eight years of experience, mid-level pay commonly moves toward ₹6 to ₹12 lakh, and senior EIA leads or practice heads can earn more, depending on the firm and the sector. Consultants in large firms, in banking due diligence or in multinational companies often earn more. Figures vary by city and employer.

Can I become an environmental consultant without an engineering degree?

Yes. Many environmental consultants have a B.Sc or M.Sc in Environmental Science, Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Geology or Life Sciences. Engineering helps for projects with heavy plant or water systems, but ecology, air and water quality, and social impact work are open to science graduates. A postgraduate diploma in EIA or environmental management can help you move into consultancy.

Is environmental consultant a government job?

Mostly no. Most environmental consultants work for private consultancies, industry or developers. Some government roles are related, such as scientists or officers at state pollution control boards and environment departments, which hire through recruitment exams. Those jobs usually require a relevant degree and a government recruitment process, so check the specific notification for each post.
