Career as a Fashion Buyer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A fashion buyer selects the clothing and accessories a store or online brand will sell and plans the budget and stock for them. Most enter via a fashion or business degree and internships.

A fashion buyer selects the clothing, footwear and accessories that a retail store or online fashion brand will sell, and manages the budget and stock needed to sell them. It is a commercial role: the buyer balances what customers want, what the business can afford and what will make a profit.

Buyers use trend reports, past sales data, fashion weeks and trade fairs to decide each season's range. They then negotiate with suppliers and manufacturers on cost, quantity and delivery dates. In India the role sits between design, merchandising and sales, and is usually reached through a fashion, retail or business degree followed by internships.

The career suits people who enjoy fashion and numbers in equal measure, can make decisions under pressure and are comfortable negotiating. Entry is usually through assistant buyer or merchandising roles, and progress depends on sales results and the judgement built over several seasons.

What Does a Fashion Buyer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Research fashion trends, colours, fabrics and competitor ranges to plan each season's collection.

  • Analyse past sales, stock and margin data to decide what to buy, how much and in which sizes.

  • Prepare the open-to-buy budget and agree it with management.

  • Source products from suppliers, brands and manufacturers, and negotiate price, quality and delivery terms.

  • Review samples, approve fabrics and check quality before orders are confirmed.

  • Work with merchandisers, planners, designers and store or marketing teams on launches, pricing and promotions.

  • Track sell-through during the season, reorder fast sellers and plan markdowns for slow ones.

Where They Work

Fashion buyers work for organised fashion retail chains, department stores and multi-brand retailers, and for e-commerce fashion platforms in India. Large brands with in-house buying teams also hire buyers, as do buying offices and sourcing agents that buy for several retailers.

Most roles are based in metros such as Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru and Chennai, where head offices and buying teams are concentrated, and buyers travel often to factories, sourcing hubs and trade fairs. Export houses and garment hubs such as Tiruppur also offer buying and sourcing roles.

How to Become a Fashion Buyer in India?

After Class 10

Choose your Class 11 and 12 stream and start building interest in fashion and retail through sketching, reading about brands and visiting stores. If you want a design-led course later, begin a simple portfolio of drawings and photographs.

After Class 12

Pick a degree route: B.Des or B.FTech for design and technology, BBA in fashion management, or any degree followed by a Master of Fashion Management or MBA. Appear for the entrance exams that apply, such as NIFT or NID, and apply to colleges on your rank and portfolio.

Undergraduate

Learn Excel, basic data analysis and fabric and garment fundamentals. Take an internship every year in store merchandising, sourcing, visual merchandising or e-commerce category work, because employers weigh practical experience heavily for buying roles.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

An MFM, an MBA in retail management or an M.Des can help you move into buying roles faster. Many buyers specialise in womenswear, menswear, footwear, accessories or e-commerce categories as they gain experience.

Licence / Certification

No licence is needed. Short certificates in merchandising, retail analytics or advanced Excel strengthen your CV, particularly if your degree is not in fashion.

First Job

Start as an assistant buyer, merchandise planner or sourcing executive. Over several seasons, progress to buyer, senior buyer and head of buying as you show sales results and sound judgement.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 in any stream for B.Des, B.FTech and most design courses. NIFT and NID entrance tests include creative and aptitude sections.

  • Commerce or Humanities with Maths is useful for a BBA in fashion management. Check each college's subject rules.

  • Graduates of any stream can apply for MFM and MBA programmes, though fashion or business backgrounds help.

  • Design courses usually ask for a portfolio of sketches or creative work.

Minimum Qualification

  • Typically a graduation (bachelor's degree) for buyer roles. Many employers prefer a fashion, retail or business degree.

  • Most institutes ask for around 50% aggregate marks in Class 12 or the degree. This varies by course and college.

  • No licence is required. Relevant experience in merchandising or sourcing is often expected for buyer-level jobs.

Scope and Future of Fashion Buyer in India

Demand for fashion buyers follows the growth of organised fashion retail, online fashion platforms and omnichannel brands in India. As more shoppers buy clothing online, buyers who can read sales data quickly and plan stock across channels are increasingly valued. Government-backed open digital commerce networks such as ONDC are also widening the range of online sellers, which adds to the sourcing choices buyers face.

Growth areas include online fashion, ethnic and festive wear for domestic and global markets, responsibly sourced clothing and private-label brands. Rising public attention to the environmental and labour costs of fast fashion means buyers increasingly have to justify sourcing decisions on quality, durability and ethics, not only price. Trade fairs such as the India International Garment Fair have long promoted India as a sourcing destination for apparel, which supports export-linked buying roles.

Government export and manufacturing initiatives support garment production and sourcing jobs in India. Abroad, experienced buyers can work with international retailers and sourcing offices, especially in major fashion hubs, though overseas roles usually need strong experience, a valid work visa and often a master's degree. Building a portfolio, learning data tools and tracking fashion weeks and trade fairs will keep you competitive.

Fashion Buyer: Frequently Asked Questions

Is fashion buyer a good career in India?

Yes, for people who enjoy fashion and numbers in equal measure. Demand is linked to the growth of organised fashion retail and online fashion, which keeps buying roles relevant. The work starts at modest pay but grows well at senior levels, and it involves long hours during season launches and sales. If you like making commercial decisions, negotiating and reading sales data, it can be rewarding.

Which course should I take to become a fashion buyer?

Common routes are B.Des or B.FTech from NIFT or NID, a BBA in fashion management, or any degree followed by a Master of Fashion Management (MFM) or an MBA in retail. Choose based on your strengths: design-led courses suit creative students, while BBA and MFM suit those who like business and data. Internships in merchandising or sourcing matter as much as the degree when you apply for your first job.

Can I become a fashion buyer after B.Com or BA?

Yes, many people enter through a B.Com or BA followed by an MFM, an MBA in retail management or a diploma in fashion merchandising. Without a fashion course, build practical experience through internships in retail stores, sourcing offices or e-commerce brands. Learning Excel, basic data analysis and fabric knowledge through short courses helps you stand out in interviews.

What is the difference between a fashion buyer and a fashion merchandiser?

A fashion buyer chooses which products to purchase and negotiates with suppliers on cost and quantity. A fashion merchandiser usually plans how the chosen products are presented, priced, allocated to stores and sold through the season. The roles overlap closely, and in many companies one team does both. Merchandising is often a common first step before moving into a buying role.

Do I need to be good at drawing to be a fashion buyer?

No. Sketching helps if you work in design, but buyers mainly need a strong eye for what customers will want, along with analysis and negotiation skills. You should understand fabrics, fits and garment quality, which you can learn through courses and factory visits. Buyers select trends and make commercial calls without designing anything themselves.

How much does a fashion buyer earn in India?

Entry-level fashion buyers and assistants typically earn around ₹3 to ₹5 lakh a year, depending on the employer and city. Mid-level buyers can earn more as they manage categories and budgets, and senior buyers and heads of buying earn considerably more. Pay varies widely with brand size, sales performance and whether the role is in a metro. Check current salary surveys before making decisions.

Is NIFT necessary to become a fashion buyer?

No. NIFT is one strong route but not the only one. Many buyers come from BBA, B.Com, design or other degrees and build experience through internships. NIFT offers design, technology and management programmes, and its placement reports can help you compare colleges, though you should read current figures directly from the institute.
