Career as a Flight Engineer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A flight engineer monitors an aircraft's engines and systems in flight; in India it is a niche role, usually entered through a DGCA flight engineer licence after Class 12 PCM.

A flight engineer is a licensed crew member who monitors an aircraft's engines, fuel, hydraulic, electrical and pressurisation systems during a flight and helps the pilots manage them. In India the role is specialised and is most often found on older multi-engine, cargo or military aircraft.

On most modern airliners these tasks are handled by automated systems and the two pilots in the cockpit, so flight engineer openings are far fewer than pilot or aircraft engineer jobs. Students who enjoy aircraft systems often find that Aircraft Maintenance Engineer or Avionics Engineer routes offer more openings.

This page explains what the job involves, the DGCA licence route after Class 12, the courses and indicative salary ranges, and an honest view of the outlook so you can compare it with other aviation careers.

What Does a Flight Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Monitor engine performance, fuel, hydraulic, electrical and pressurisation systems during flight

  • Carry out pre-flight checks of aircraft systems and record the results in the technical log

  • Calculate fuel requirements and track fuel burn against the flight plan

  • Identify in-flight system faults and work through the checklists with the pilots

  • Assist the pilots with weight and balance and aircraft performance calculations

  • Carry out abnormal and emergency procedures as set out in the aircraft manual

  • Report defects to ground engineers after landing so they can be repaired before the next flight

Where They Work

Flight engineers work mainly on multi-engine aircraft that still carry a third crew member, such as some older passenger aircraft and many cargo and charter aircraft. Employers in India can include commercial airlines running older fleets, cargo and charter operators, and aviation companies that operate or test multi-engine aircraft.

Military air forces also have flight engineer roles, usually within their technical or airmen trades, and the work is shift and roster based with regular training and recurrent checks. Entry and posting details differ by employer, so check current notifications and operator requirements before applying.

How to Become a Flight Engineer in India?

After Class 10

Build a strong base in Mathematics and Science and keep English strong, since aviation manuals and licence exams are in English. Begin reading about aircraft systems to see whether the work interests you.

After Class 12

Complete Class 12 in the science stream with Physics and Mathematics. Most training organisations ask for a minimum aggregate in these subjects, often around 50 per cent, but confirm the exact requirement with the institute you plan to join.

Undergraduate

A degree is optional. Many candidates take a B.Tech or B.E. in Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering, or an aircraft maintenance engineering course, to deepen their technical knowledge and widen their job options.

Licence / Certification

Complete flight engineer training at a DGCA-approved training organisation, pass the required DGCA examinations, and obtain the Flight Engineer Licence along with the aviation medical certificate. The exact training hours and medical class must be confirmed with the current DGCA rules.

First Job

Start as a junior or trainee flight engineer with an operator. Larger aircraft need a type rating on that specific aircraft, and recurrent training and checks continue throughout the career.

Works as a technical crew member on military transport or support aircraft, subject to current recruitment rules.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

Inspects, repairs and certifies aircraft; a more widely available route for those who enjoy aircraft systems.

Avionics Engineer

Installs, tests and maintains aircraft electronics, navigation and communication systems.

Flight Dispatcher

Plans flights with the crew, checking weather, fuel and routes before departure.

Scope and Future of Flight Engineer in India

Demand for flight engineers in India is limited. Most modern passenger aircraft are flown by two pilots with automated monitoring, so the dedicated third crew member is no longer needed on many fleets. Openings tend to come from older multi-engine aircraft, cargo and charter operations, and military air forces, and they can change with fleet decisions by operators.

Growth in civil aviation may create more demand for trained aviation technical staff, but the growth is more likely to benefit aircraft maintenance, avionics, dispatch and flight operations roles than dedicated flight engineer positions. Candidates who want a flexible career should combine flight engineer training with maintenance or avionics skills.

Opportunities abroad follow the same pattern: the role is found mainly on older or specialised aircraft, and many newer jet fleets do not carry a flight engineer. Candidates who hope to work overseas should check the rules of the target country and the current fleet of the employer before investing in training.

Flight Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

Is flight engineer a good career in India?

It can suit students who enjoy aircraft systems and want a technical role in the air, but it is a niche career. Most modern passenger jets are flown by two pilots with automated systems, so flight engineer openings are limited and mostly found on older multi-engine, cargo or military aircraft. Weigh this against Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, Avionics Engineer or Commercial Pilot routes before deciding.

What is the difference between a flight engineer and a pilot?

A pilot flies the aircraft and is responsible for its overall control and safety. A flight engineer monitors the aircraft's systems, such as engines, fuel, hydraulics and electrics, and handles system faults using checklists while supporting the pilots. Some aircraft carry a flight engineer alongside two pilots, but on most modern jets that position has been removed because automation does the monitoring.

Do I need a degree to become a flight engineer?

A degree is not always required. The core requirements are a Class 12 pass with Physics and Mathematics and the DGCA Flight Engineer Licence, which you earn through an approved training organisation. Many people add an aeronautical engineering degree or an aircraft maintenance diploma to strengthen their technical knowledge and improve job options, especially if they plan to move into maintenance or design roles later.

How much does a flight engineer earn in India?

Entry-level pay is indicatively around ₹4 to ₹8 lakh a year, rising with experience and type ratings on larger aircraft. Pay varies by operator, aircraft type, flying hours and whether the job is with an airline, a cargo operator or a government service. Treat these figures as a guide only and check current offers from employers before making decisions.

Which subjects should I choose in Class 11 and 12?

Choose the science stream with Physics and Mathematics, and keep English strong because aviation manuals and licence exams are in English. Physics and Mathematics matter most for understanding aircraft systems, fuel and performance calculations. Chemistry or Computer Science are useful electives. Check the exact subject and mark requirements with the training organisation you plan to join, as they can differ.

Can a flight engineer become a pilot?

Some flight engineers move into pilot training after gaining aviation experience, but this is not automatic. Pilot licences need their own training, flying hours and medical standards, and the route and costs differ from the flight engineer licence. Students who want to fly the aircraft should look at the Commercial Pilot pathway directly, while those who enjoy systems work can consider the flight engineer route with an eye on later progression.

Is there an entrance exam for flight engineer training?

Admission to flight engineer licence training is usually based on the training organisation's own process, including Class 12 marks and a medical check. Some engineering and aviation degree courses have entrance exams of their own. Check each institute's admission notice and confirm current requirements with the training organisation before you apply, since they can change from year to year.
