A forest engineer designs and builds the physical works that keep forests healthy and accessible, such as forest roads, bridges, check dams and nurseries, and plans timber and forest-produce operations. It is the point where civil or mechanical engineering meets forest management.
In India, most forest engineers work for state forest departments and forest development corporations. Some work on mining, power and infrastructure projects that need forest clearance or land restoration. Recruitment runs through state forest services and, at the central level, the Indian Forest Service.
The work is part office and part field. You may spend long days on rough terrain, in remote postings and in monsoon conditions. Students who enjoy design and maths and also like time outdoors tend to do well. Job titles vary by state, so read each recruitment notice carefully.
