Career as an HRIS Analyst in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

An HRIS analyst runs HR software that holds employee records, payroll and leave data, and turns it into reports. Entry usually needs a graduate degree plus HR or MBA training.

An HRIS analyst keeps an organisation's HR software working. The system holds employee records, payroll inputs, leave balances and benefits, and the analyst configures it, checks the data inside it, and turns that data into reports for HR and leadership.

Companies use an HRIS (human resources information system) to automate core HR work such as payroll, time tracking and benefits administration. Once a system is in place, someone must own it: set up the rules, fix errors, manage user access and make sure payroll and compliance data is correct. In India this work is found across IT services firms, banks, manufacturers, hospitals and global capability centres (GCCs).

Any graduate can start on this path, and a BBA, B.Com or MBA/PGDM with HR specialisation helps most. Expect a steady, detail-heavy job where payroll deadlines and data errors are the hard parts. Students who enjoy spreadsheets, process checks and helping colleagues solve problems tend to do well.

Where They Work

Most HRIS analysts in India work in the HR or IT department of large employers: IT services and BPO firms, banks and NBFCs, manufacturing groups, retail chains, hospital networks, and multinational global capability centres (GCCs) that run HR operations for parent companies.

HR technology companies and consulting firms also hire HRIS analysts to set up and support HR software for client organisations. Many roles are in cities with large corporate sectors such as Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Gurugram, and some are hybrid or remote.

Scope and Future of HRIS Analyst in India

Demand for HRIS analysts follows the spread of HR software. As companies move from spreadsheets to integrated HR platforms, they need people to run and maintain them, and the data work grows alongside. Global capability centres and mid-sized firms are a major source of these roles.

Two trends add to the scope. People analytics is growing, as HR decisions increasingly rely on workforce data. Compliance work is also rising, since India's new labour codes add rules that payroll and HR records must follow. Analysts who combine HR knowledge with reporting and automation skills can move into people analytics and HR technology leadership.

Abroad, HRIS skills transfer to HR technology roles in the UK, Europe, the Gulf and North America, but you usually need a work visa and platform certifications recognised there. Within India, the path runs from HRIS analyst to senior analyst, HRIS manager or HR technology consultant.

HRIS Analyst: Frequently Asked Questions

What does an HRIS analyst do?

An HRIS analyst looks after the HR software that stores employee records, attendance, leave, payroll inputs and benefits. They set up system rules, check data for errors, fix issues raised by HR teams and employees, manage user access, and build reports on headcount, attrition and cost. The role combines HR knowledge with technical and data skills, so it suits people who want to work with both people and systems.

Can I become an HRIS analyst after BBA or B.Com?

Yes. A BBA or B.Com is a common starting point because it gives you basic HR, finance and business knowledge. Most employers then look for an MBA or PGDM with HR specialisation, or an HR software certification, along with Excel and reporting skills. Many people also start in HR operations and learn the HR system on the job before taking the analyst title.

What is the salary of an HRIS analyst in India?

Pay depends on experience, city, employer type and HR software skills. As an indicative guide, entry-level roles start at around ₹3 to ₹5 lakh a year, mid-level roles at around ₹6 to ₹12 lakh, and senior HRIS managers earn more. Check current salary surveys before you decide, as pay changes with the market.

Do I need coding to become an HRIS analyst?

Coding is not compulsory for most HRIS analyst roles. Strong Excel, basic SQL for pulling data, and Power BI or a similar tool for dashboards are usually enough to start. Python becomes useful for people analytics roles. Most day-to-day work is configuring HR software, checking data and explaining results to HR colleagues.

What is the difference between an HRIS analyst and an HR analytics analyst?

An HRIS analyst focuses on the HR system itself: setting it up, keeping employee data accurate, supporting payroll and users, and producing standard reports. An HR analytics analyst uses that data to answer deeper questions, such as why people leave or which hiring channels work best. The roles overlap, and many HRIS analysts move into analytics as they gain experience.

Is HRIS analyst a good career for students who like both people and data?

Yes, if you enjoy working with both people and data. The job asks you to understand HR policies, such as leave and payroll rules, and to be precise with records. It is detail-heavy and can be busy around payroll deadlines, so it suits people who like structured work and helping colleagues solve problems.

Which HR software should I learn first?

Learn the platform your target employers use. Large companies often use enterprise systems such as SAP SuccessFactors, Workday or Oracle HCM, while many Indian mid-sized firms use tools such as Zoho People. Vendor certifications help, but Excel and reporting skills transfer across all of them. Check job postings in your city to see which tools they ask for.
