Career as a Merchant Navy Officer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A Merchant Navy officer runs the deck or engine of a commercial ship carrying cargo worldwide; many enter through a PCM-based B.Sc Nautical Science or B.Tech Marine Engineering.

A Merchant Navy officer is a trained marine professional who works on commercial ships carrying cargo and passengers between ports. Officers either navigate and command the ship from the deck or run its engines and power systems from the engine room.

In India, the route usually starts after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, through a B.Sc Nautical Science or B.Tech Marine Engineering course at a maritime institute. It is followed by sea training and DG Shipping certificates before a first job as a junior officer.

The pay is strong for a young age, but the work is demanding. Contracts keep you away from home for months at a time, and training is strict. Students should be comfortable with maths and science, ready for long periods away from family, and able to pass a medical fitness test before starting.

What Does a Merchant Navy Officer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Plan voyages, calculate routes, and check weather, tides and ship stability before departure (deck branch).

  • Stand watches on the bridge to keep the ship safe in busy waters and bad weather.

  • Operate, maintain and repair main engines, generators, pumps and other machinery (engine branch).

  • Supervise cargo loading, stowage and discharge so that cargo stays safe and the ship stays balanced.

  • Run safety drills, firefighting and emergency procedures, and keep the crew trained for them.

  • Keep logbooks and records for port authorities, flag state officials and the shipping company.

  • Follow international rules on safety and pollution prevention, and handle port inspections.

Where They Work

Most Merchant Navy officers work for shipping companies that run cargo, bulk, container, tanker or passenger vessels. In India, employers include the government-owned Shipping Corporation of India and private companies such as Great Eastern Shipping Company, along with ship-management firms, offshore and oil-and-gas support operators, and cruise and passenger vessel operators.

Many Indian officers also sail on foreign-flag ships, usually hired through manning agencies. After some years at sea, officers can move into shore jobs such as marine superintendent, port operations or ship management, mostly in offices in port cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Kochi.

How to Become a Merchant Navy Officer in India?

After Class 10

Choose the Science stream and build a strong base in Maths and Science, so that Physics, Chemistry and Maths in Class 11 and 12 feel manageable. Good English matters too, since training and ship communication are in English.

After Class 12

Complete Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English. Apply through IMU CET or the entrance test of a DG Shipping-approved maritime institute, and get your medical fitness certificate ready.

Undergraduate

Pursue a B.Sc Nautical Science (deck branch) or B.Tech Marine Engineering (engine branch). Shore-based classes are followed by pre-sea and sea training on a ship as a cadet, usually taking around 3 to 4 years in total.

Licence / Certification

After the required sea service, pass the DG Shipping Certificate of Competency (COC) examinations. Also obtain the Continuous Discharge Certificate (CDC) and the STCW safety training certificates.

First Job

Join a shipping company or manning agency as a Third Officer (deck) or Junior Engineer (engine). Promotion to Second Officer, Chief Officer and Master, or to Second Engineer and Chief Engineer, comes with more sea service and higher COC levels.

Scope and Future of Merchant Navy Officer in India

Demand for trained officers depends on global trade and on India's own shipping growth. A large share of India's trade moves by sea, and government programmes such as Sagarmala aim to expand ports, coastal shipping and maritime skills (verify the latest status before publishing). Growth areas include coastal and inland shipping, offshore support vessels, LNG and oil tankers, and cruise and passenger ships.

Officers with a DG Shipping COC and solid sea service can move into shore roles such as marine superintendent, fleet safety, ship management, maritime training or port operations. These roles usually offer more regular hours and suit officers who want to build a long-term career.

Abroad, Indian officers are widely employed on foreign-flag ships through manning agencies. Working on international routes gives exposure to global standards, but pay, contract length and visa rules vary by employer and country, so check the terms carefully before signing.

Merchant Navy Officer: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I become a Merchant Navy officer after Class 12 with Commerce?

Generally no. The main officer courses, B.Sc Nautical Science and B.Tech Marine Engineering, require Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English. Commerce and Arts students usually cannot apply directly. Check the eligibility in the IMU CET notice or an institute's prospectus before deciding, and choose the Science stream from Class 11 if this career interests you.

What is the difference between the deck and engine branches?

Deck officers, who usually study B.Sc Nautical Science, navigate the ship, handle cargo and command the vessel. Engine officers, who usually study B.Tech Marine Engineering, maintain and run the engines, generators and machinery. Both branches sail on the same ships and can rise to Master or Chief Engineer. Choose based on whether you prefer navigation and leadership or technical, mechanical work.

How much does a Merchant Navy officer earn in India?

Pay varies with rank, employer, ship type and contract. Entry-level officers are often reported to earn around ₹6 to ₹10 lakh a year, rising to tens of lakhs for masters and chief engineers. These are approximate figures. Check current salary surveys and actual company offers, and be cautious of headlines quoting very high monthly pay.

Is the Merchant Navy a good career for women?

Yes, women can build careers as officers. Several institutes admit women to deck and engine courses, and the field has been opening up over time. Check the current policy of each institute and employer, since facilities on board and contract terms can vary. Many shore-based shipping roles are also open to women.

How long does it take to become a Merchant Navy officer?

Degree training typically takes around 3 to 4 years, including sea training. After that you need sea service and DG Shipping exams before you can sail as a Third or Junior Officer. Total time from Class 12 to a first officer rank is usually several years, and promotion to senior ranks takes longer.

What is a DG Shipping Certificate of Competency (COC)?

A COC is the official licence from the Directorate General of Shipping that allows you to serve as an officer on a merchant ship. You earn it by passing DG Shipping examinations after completing the required training and sea service. The grade of COC you hold decides the rank you can take on board.

Do I need to be medically fit to join the Merchant Navy?

Yes. Candidates need a medical fitness certificate under DG Shipping standards, which checks eyesight, colour vision, hearing and general health. Because ships have long voyages, medical fitness is checked again during your career. Ask the institute which tests apply to the course you choose.
