Career as a Mining Technician in India: Courses, Jobs and How to Begin

At a glance

A mining technician helps run mine operations by maintaining equipment, collecting mineral samples and checking safety, usually after an ITI certificate or a diploma.

A mining technician helps run day-to-day mine operations by keeping equipment working, collecting and preparing mineral samples, and making sure work follows safety rules. It is a hands-on technical role that usually starts after an ITI certificate or a diploma, and it suits students who like machines, field work and practical problem-solving.

Mining is an important part of the Indian economy. The Ministry of Mines notes that mineral production has grown strongly since independence, both in quantity and value, and the Ministry oversees the survey and exploration of minerals and the mining of non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper, zinc, lead, gold and nickel. Every mine needs technicians to keep equipment, samples and records in order.

The work is not for everyone. Mine sites can be noisy, remote and shift-based, and the job often involves working outdoors or underground, where discipline about safety rules is essential. An ITI or diploma is a practical route in, and some coal companies recruit diploma holders and freshers through apprenticeships, but each employer sets its own eligibility, so check every notice carefully.

What Does a Mining Technician Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Operating, checking and servicing mining equipment such as drills, loaders, conveyors and pumps, under the direction of a supervisor

  • Collecting, labelling and preparing mineral samples for testing, and recording the results

  • Carrying out routine inspections of machinery, electrical systems and ventilation or water-handling equipment

  • Following safety procedures, using gas detectors and protective equipment, and reporting hazards to supervisors without delay

  • Helping with measurement and survey work and with updating mine plans, as directed by engineers

  • Keeping shift logs, maintenance records and mineral dispatch paperwork, such as the eMM11 transit form used for mineral transport in Uttar Pradesh

  • Supporting drilling and loading work during the shift under the guidance of a shift supervisor

Where They Work

Mining technicians work at coal, lignite, metal and mineral mines, as well as at quarries and mineral processing plants. Public sector coal companies such as SECL, CCL and WCL have advertised apprentice and supervisory posts open to diploma holders, graduates and freshers in 2025 and 2026, and NLC and MECON have also advertised engineering and junior engineer posts this year.

Private mining companies, processing plants, mining contractors and equipment service firms also hire technicians. State mines and geology departments, such as those in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, regulate mining activity and mineral movement, so their websites are useful for understanding how the field is governed.

How to Become a Mining Technician in India?

After Class 10

Choose between an ITI trade such as fitter, electrician or mechanic, or a polytechnic diploma in mining engineering. Both are common routes into technician work. Check the admission rules of each institute before applying.

Apprenticeship

Coal companies advertise apprentice posts for diploma holders and freshers. SECL's 2026 apprentice drive offered around 1,700 posts across graduates, diploma holders and freshers. An apprenticeship gives practical training on real mine sites and can lead to a regular post.

Licence / Certification

Supervisory mine roles require statutory certificates issued under mining safety rules. Check the current requirements with the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) before you apply for these posts.

First Job

Start as a trainee or technician in a mine, quarry or processing plant. Early work focuses on equipment checks, sampling, safety rounds and records, under supervision.

Undergraduate (Optional)

A B.Tech in Mining Engineering opens engineering roles. Experienced technicians can also aim for supervisory posts such as Mining Sirdar or Assistant Foreman, which WCL advertised in 2026.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 10 with maths and science is a common base for diploma and many ITI admissions, but exact subjects depend on the institute

  • Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Maths (PCM) is needed if you later move to a B.Tech in Mining Engineering

  • Typical minimum marks are set by each institute and recruiter, so check the current admission or recruitment notice before applying

Minimum Qualification

  • Class 10 pass is needed for ITI trade courses

  • An ITI certificate in a relevant trade or a diploma in mining engineering is the usual qualification for technician roles

  • Recent coal company apprentice notices have accepted graduates, diploma holders and freshers, so eligibility varies by post

Scope and Future of Mining Technician in India

Demand for mining technicians follows mineral production. The Ministry of Mines reports that India's mining sector has grown strongly since independence, in both the quantity and value of minerals produced. This keeps steady demand for skilled field staff. Coal companies and public sector mining bodies also recruit regularly, as recent notices from SECL, CCL, WCL, NLC and MECON show.

Growth areas include non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper, zinc, lead, gold and nickel, which fall under the Ministry of Mines' responsibilities, along with critical minerals that support clean energy supply chains. Technicians who build strong safety and digital record-keeping skills, and who gain statutory certificates, have a clearer route upward to Sirdar and Foreman posts.

Mining is regulated under the Mines and Minerals (Regulation and Development) Act, 1957, implemented through the Ministry of Mines and state mines departments. Regulation keeps compliance and safety roles in demand. Opportunities abroad exist in mining countries, but licensing and certification rules differ by country, so check the requirements of any destination before planning a move.

Mining Technician: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a mining technician do?

A mining technician supports mine operations. Typical work includes checking and servicing equipment, collecting and preparing mineral samples, following safety procedures and keeping shift and maintenance records. The role sits between skilled workers on the floor and mining engineers, so it involves both hands-on work and reporting to supervisors.

Can I become a mining technician after ITI?

Yes. An ITI certificate in a relevant trade such as fitter, electrician or mechanic is a common starting point for mining technician work. Many recruiters also accept diploma holders and graduates, so ITI holders should compare notices carefully and look for apprenticeship posts where they can build experience on mine sites.

Do I need a diploma to become a mining technician?

Not always. A diploma in mining engineering is one route, and ITI trades are another. The right choice depends on whether you prefer hands-on trade skills or a broader technical course. Some supervisory mining roles also require statutory certificates, so plan for those whichever course you take, and check each employer's requirements before deciding.

What is the salary of a mining technician in India?

Verified salary figures for this role are not listed here yet. Pay depends on the employer, the state, whether the company is public or private, and the grade. Public sector coal companies publish their own pay structures, so check the current recruitment notice of each employer for its pay scale before relying on any figure.

Is mining technician a safe career?

Mining carries real risks, including heavy machinery, dust, gases and ground movement. Where safety rules are enforced, modern practices have significantly improved mine safety. Technicians work under safety procedures, protective gear and supervision. Following procedures, using gas detection and protective equipment, and reporting hazards early make the job much safer.

Which government jobs can mining technicians apply for?

Public sector coal companies such as SECL, CCL and WCL have advertised apprentice and supervisory posts open to diploma holders, graduates and freshers. Recent notices include SECL's apprentice drive with around 1,700 posts and WCL's notice for 444 Mining Sirdar and Assistant Foreman posts. Eligibility and dates change, so read each official notice carefully.

Is there an entrance exam for mining technician courses?

We have not yet confirmed a national entrance exam for mining technician courses. ITI and polytechnic admissions typically follow state or institute rules, so check the admission notice of each institute you are considering. Some government recruitment exams for mining posts have their own written tests, which are separate from course admission.

Is mining work only underground?

No. Mining takes place in surface pits, underground mines, quarries and processing plants. The setting depends on the mineral and the mine. Ores recovered by mining include metals, coal, limestone, gypsum and clay, so your day-to-day location can be outdoors on a surface site or underground.
