A naval combat systems engineer designs, integrates and maintains the sensors, weapons and fire-control systems that help a warship detect, track and engage targets at sea. Most people enter with a B.E. or B.Tech in electronics, electrical or a related branch, then work for the Navy, a naval dockyard, a DRDO laboratory or a defence shipbuilder.

Interest in naval power is high right now. India commissioned INS Mahendragiri in July 2026, a Mahe-class anti-submarine shallow water craft joined the Western Naval Command in November 2025, and a second advanced stealth frigate built in Russia was reported as due for India in 2025. Each new or upgraded ship needs engineers who can make its combat systems work together.

The work is demanding. Expect long hours during trials, periods at sea away from family, strict security and safety rules, and some work that is classified. The reward is a rare skill set: you understand how radar, weapons and software behave on a moving ship in salt water.

What Does a Naval Combat Systems Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Support the design and specification of sensor, weapon and fire-control systems for new or upgraded ships.

  • Integrate radars, sonars, missile launchers and gun systems with the ship's combat management software and data links.

  • Plan and supervise installation, cable checks and power-up of combat equipment in dockyards and on board.

  • Run harbour and sea trials, and record performance against the specification.

  • Diagnose faults on board or in the workshop, and arrange repairs, spares and software updates.

  • Keep configuration records, safety procedures and technical documents up to date.

  • Coordinate with ship designers, software teams and DRDO or PSU partners on upgrades and refits.

Where They Work

Most naval combat systems engineers work in the Indian Navy's technical branches, in naval dockyards and at shore establishments where ships are built, refitted and maintained. Officers may serve on board during sea deployments and rotate between ship and shore postings.

Civilian roles exist in DRDO laboratories working on naval systems, in defence public sector undertakings such as Bharat Electronics Limited and shipbuilders such as Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and Goa Shipyard, and in private firms that supply naval sensors and weapon systems. Each employer recruits through its own notification, so track them separately.

Scope and Future of Naval Combat Systems Engineer in India

Demand for naval combat systems skills follows the Navy's ship-building and induction plans. India commissioned INS Mahendragiri in July 2026, and a Mahe-class anti-submarine shallow water craft joined the Western Naval Command in late 2025. Each new or upgraded ship needs engineers who can integrate sensors, weapons and software, test them at sea and keep them running for decades.

Growth is strongest in defence shipbuilding, naval electronics and weapon systems, where the government is pushing for indigenous design and manufacturing. Naval dockyard apprentice notifications in 2026 and Agniveer apprentice recruitment show the Navy and its dockyards hiring at several levels. Engineers who combine electronics with software, such as radar signal processing, embedded control and combat management software, are likely to be in demand.

Skills in shipborne combat systems are not limited to India. Engineers may find work with foreign navies, shipyards and global defence companies, but these roles usually need citizenship or export clearances and experience on specific equipment families. Build a strong base in India first, then consider overseas options as your experience grows.

Naval Combat Systems Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a naval combat systems engineer do?

A naval combat systems engineer looks after the equipment that lets a warship fight, including radars, sonars, missile and gun control, fire-control computers and the links between them. The work covers design support, installation, integration, sea trials and maintenance. The job is technical, but it is always tied to safety, because a fault at sea can seriously affect the crew and the ship.

Do I have to join the Navy to become a naval combat systems engineer?

No. Many engineers work as civilians in naval dockyards, DRDO laboratories working on naval systems, and defence public sector undertakings. Others join the Navy as officers through the technical Short Service Commission entry or the Naval Academy route, which brings a uniform, sea postings and a service career. Eligibility and selection rules differ, so check the current notice for each route.

Which degree is best for this career?

A B.E. or B.Tech in Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, or Instrumentation is the most common route, because combat systems depend on electronics, control and signal processing. Mechanical and mechatronics engineers also enter through weapons, gun mounts and launchers. Strong Physics and Mathematics in Class 12 help with entrance exams, and a master's in control systems or defence technology adds depth later.

What is the salary of a naval combat systems engineer in India?

Entry-level engineers in defence labs, shipyards and PSUs typically start around ₹5 to ₹8 lakh a year, depending on the employer and qualification. Mid-level engineers with about four to ten years of experience often earn around ₹9 to ₹16 lakh, and senior specialists can earn more. Navy officers are paid under the government pay structure, which includes allowances. Figures vary, so check current pay scales before deciding.

Is an M.Tech necessary for this career?

Not always. A B.Tech is enough to enter as an engineer, a trainee or a Navy officer in many defence organisations. An M.Tech helps if you want research roles at DRDO labs, design work or faster progress into scientist grades. GATE scores are used by many public sector employers and for postgraduate admission. A two-year defence technology master's course was reported in 2021 as an option.

Which entrance exam should I take after Class 12?

For a B.Tech, JEE Main is the usual national entrance exam for engineering colleges, and JEE Advanced is used for IIT admissions. If you want to become a Navy officer, the NDA and NA examination is taken after Class 12. Choose based on whether you want a degree-first career or an officer career, and read the eligibility rules for each route carefully before applying.

How is a naval combat systems engineer different from a marine engineer?

A marine engineer looks after a ship's propulsion, power plant, pumps and machinery, so the ship moves and stays afloat. A naval combat systems engineer focuses on the sensors, weapons, radars, sonars and fire-control systems that let the ship detect and engage targets. The two often work side by side on the same vessel, but their training and daily tools differ.

Is this career stable in India?

Demand is steady because India keeps adding ships and upgrading its fleet. Recent reports include the commissioning of INS Mahendragiri in July 2026 and the arrival of Mahe-class anti-submarine craft for the Western Naval Command. Government and defence jobs offer more job security, while private defence roles depend more on the project pipeline of each company.
