Career as a Petroleum Geologist in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A petroleum geologist studies rock layers, sediments and subsurface data to find oil and natural gas reserves; in India, entry usually follows a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Geology or Applied Geology.

A petroleum geologist studies rocks, sediments and subsurface data to find oil and natural gas and judge whether a reserve is worth drilling. The job sits at the start of the oil and gas chain, before any well is drilled.

Much of the work happens in offices, where geologists read seismic maps, well logs and rock samples. Geologists also spend time at drill sites and in oil fields, so field observation and data analysis both matter.

In India, the main employers include public-sector companies such as ONGC and Oil India, which have recruited geologists through walk-ins and online tests in 2025 and 2026. A B.Sc. in Geology is the usual starting point, and an M.Sc. in Geology or Applied Geology is what most geologist roles are expected to need.

What Does a Petroleum Geologist Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Examine rock cores, cuttings and outcrops to identify rock types, their age and the environment in which they formed.

  • Interpret seismic surveys with geophysicists to map faults, folds and other structures where oil or gas could be trapped.

  • Analyse well logs and drilling samples to find reservoir rock and zones that contain fluids.

  • Build subsurface geological maps and models that show rock layers, faults and the extent of a reservoir.

  • Estimate how much oil or gas may be in place and how much could be recovered, working with reservoir engineers.

  • Advise on drilling depths and target zones, and monitor geology at the well site during drilling.

  • Write technical reports and present prospect recommendations to managers, partners and regulators.

Where They Work

The main public-sector employers are ONGC and Oil India Limited, both of which have advertised geologist posts in 2025 and 2026 through walk-in interviews and computer-based tests. Private upstream operators such as Reliance Industries and Vedanta, along with seismic and well-logging service companies, also hire petroleum geologists.

Work is split between offices in cities and field sites. Onshore fields in states such as Assam, Gujarat and Rajasthan, and offshore basins off India's coasts, need geologists on rotation. Some roles are based at research centres and consultancies that advise oil companies.

Scope and Future of Petroleum Geologist in India

India depends heavily on imported crude oil, so domestic exploration remains a national priority. The Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC) publishes monthly data on crude oil, refining and production. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas says its Exploration Division is contributing to ongoing efforts under Samudra Manthan, and public-sector geologist recruitment has continued through 2025 and 2026.

The skills of a petroleum geologist also apply beyond oil and gas, including groundwater and geothermal exploration, carbon storage site assessment and hydrogen storage studies. PPAC's 2026 journal on future transportation fuels covers natural gas, biofuels, hydrogen and e-fuels, which shows that gas and transition fuels are part of India's planning for years ahead.

Geologists with field and software experience can work abroad with international oil companies and service firms, particularly in regions with active exploration. Visa rules and local hiring norms apply. Keeping up with new software and energy transition topics will help you across a long career.

Petroleum Geologist: Frequently Asked Questions

Is petroleum geology a good career in India?

It can be, if you enjoy fieldwork and data analysis and are comfortable with a career that depends on oil-company and public-sector hiring. ONGC and Oil India have recruited geologists in 2025 and 2026 through walk-ins and online tests, according to recent recruitment news. Hiring is cyclical, so keep your M.Sc. and skills current and watch for notifications from several employers.

What is the difference between a petroleum geologist and a petroleum engineer?

A petroleum geologist studies rocks and their history to find where oil and gas may be trapped and to describe the reservoir. A petroleum engineer decides how to extract the oil or gas, designing drilling plans and production methods. Geologists usually come from Geology or Applied Geology, while petroleum engineers usually come from a B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering. The two teams work closely on the same fields.

Can I become a petroleum geologist after B.Sc. Geology?

Yes, B.Sc. Geology is the usual starting point, but many geologist roles in oil and gas ask for a postgraduate degree. Plan for an M.Sc. in Geology, Applied Geology or Geophysics, and use those two years to build skills in seismic interpretation, well logs and GIS. Field camps and projects during your B.Sc. help too. Check the exact qualification in each recruitment notice before you apply.

Which exam should I take to study geology at postgraduate level?

For M.Sc. admission, IIT JAM is widely used by IITs and some other institutes, and it is held once a year. For M.Tech and research programmes, GATE is the main test, and its Geology and Geophysics paper is relevant to this career. Eligibility and dates vary by institute and year, so check the official website of each exam and college.

How much does a petroleum geologist earn in India?

Entry-level pay is estimated at around ₹6 to ₹10 lakh a year, rising to roughly ₹25 lakh or more at senior levels. These figures are indicative and have not been checked against a current pay scale. Public-sector pay follows company pay structures and allowances, so check the latest notification before deciding. Private operators and consultancies may pay differently.

Is petroleum geology mostly field work?

It is a mix. Many geologists spend long periods at drilling sites, rock outcrops or core-logging facilities, especially early in their careers. Others spend more time in offices and labs, interpreting seismic data, well logs and models. The pattern depends on the role: a well-site geologist is mostly at the rig, while a reservoir geologist is usually in an office. Ask employers about their rotation schedules.

Will the energy transition reduce demand for petroleum geologists?

The energy transition is changing the work, but subsurface skills still apply. Geologists are needed for groundwater, geothermal, carbon storage and hydrogen storage studies, which all depend on understanding rock formations. PPAC's 2026 journal focuses on future transportation fuels, including natural gas and hydrogen, which suggests that oil and gas will remain part of planning for years. Keep learning new tools.
