Career as a Pharmacy Technician in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A pharmacy technician supports registered pharmacists in storing, preparing, dispensing and recording medicines; in India most start with a Class 12 science route and a D.Pharm.

A pharmacy technician supports registered pharmacists by receiving, storing, preparing and recording medicines in retail pharmacies, hospitals and pharmaceutical plants. In India it is a practical entry point into drug handling, and many people use it as a stepping stone toward a Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) or a B.Pharm.

The title is used loosely in India. Under the Pharmacy Act, 1948, dispensing as a pharmacist requires registration with the State Pharmacy Council, so most technician-level staff work under a registered pharmacist on stock, billing, packing and quality records. If you want to dispense on your own, you need a D.Pharm or B.Pharm and registration.

This page covers the subjects you need, the diploma and short-course routes, how registration works, typical pay ranges and where the work can take you. Course lengths, fees and college details change, so confirm them with the institute before you apply.

What Does a Pharmacy Technician Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Receive, check and store medicines and medical supplies, including temperature-sensitive stock, as per storage guidelines.

  • Check expiry dates, batch numbers and stock levels, and raise purchase requests before shortages occur.

  • Assist the registered pharmacist in filling prescriptions, labelling and packing medicines.

  • Prepare simple solutions, dosage packs or ward supplies under the pharmacist's supervision.

  • Maintain purchase, sales and dispensing records, including the registers that drug laws require.

  • Handle billing and pharmacy software, and pass clinical questions to the pharmacist.

  • In manufacturing plants, follow cleaning and documentation procedures, record batch details and support quality checks.

Where They Work

Most pharmacy technician-level jobs in India are in retail pharmacies, from standalone chemist shops to pharmacy chains, and in hospital pharmacies run by government hospitals, medical colleges and private hospital groups. Government generic medicine outlets such as Jan Aushadhi Kendras also employ staff for dispensing and stock work, subject to their own requirements.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, technicians work in dispensing, packaging, warehouse and quality support roles, often in companies that make tablets, syrups and injectables. Distributors, stockists, clinical research sites and online pharmacies also hire for stock, order processing and documentation, so check each employer's qualification rules before applying.

How to Become a Pharmacy Technician in India?

After Class 10

Class 10 is not a fixed entry point, but good marks in science and maths help. Short skill courses in basic pharmacy or medical stores can build early familiarity. If you plan a D.Pharm, choose the science stream in Class 11.

After Class 12

Complete Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB), or PCM where the institute allows it. Most D.Pharm colleges set a minimum aggregate, often around 50%, with lower cut-offs for reserved categories. Confirm the exact cut-off with each institute.

Diploma and Training

The two-year D.Pharm covers pharmacy practice, dispensing, pharmacology and pharmaceutics. D.Pharm students sit an exit examination under the Pharmacy Council of India's Diploma in Pharmacy Exit Exam Regulations, 2022. If you only want assistant roles, a shorter certificate or skill course may be enough.

Registration with State Pharmacy Council

To practise as a registered pharmacist, apply to your State Pharmacy Council. The Delhi Pharmacy Council process, for example, asks for a photograph, signature, Class 12 certificate, diploma marksheets and certificate, address proof and training certificates. The council states the online step should take about 20 minutes once you log in, and you must visit the office with originals for fresh registration.

First Job

Start in a retail, hospital or manufacturing role under a registered pharmacist. Learn the stock system, dispensing workflow and documentation standards. Keep your training certificates and records, since employers and councils ask for them.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Many D.Pharm holders move into a B.Pharm, usually a four-year degree that they can enter through lateral entry. For further study, the Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT) is the national test used for M.Pharm admissions and scholarships. Check current eligibility before you plan.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 in science. PCB is the most common stream for D.Pharm, and many institutes also accept PCM. Check the subject list each institute specifies.

  • Typical minimum: around 50% aggregate in Class 12 science, with lower cut-offs for reserved categories at many institutes. Verify the exact marks for each college.

  • For ITI-style or skill-based assistant courses, a Class 10 pass is often asked. Confirm the requirement for each course.

Minimum Qualification

  • Class 12 pass with science for D.Pharm, the usual diploma route.

  • Registration with the State Pharmacy Council before working as a registered pharmacist.

  • Assistant and store roles may accept Class 10 or 12 plus a certificate in pharmacy or medical stores, depending on the employer.

Scope and Future of Pharmacy Technician in India

Demand for pharmacy staff follows the health system. Retail chains, hospitals, clinics and manufacturing plants all need people who can handle medicines accurately, so the work tends to be steady rather than seasonal.

Pharmacy skilling is part of national and sector efforts. The Pharmacy Council of India marks National Pharmacy Education Day on 6 March and Pharmacists Day on 25 September, and LSSDC-PCI runs a Skill Centre under the PMKVY Fresh Skilling Special Project. Pharmacovigilance (drug safety reporting) and quality systems also need trained support staff.

Overseas work is possible but not automatic. Most destination countries need their own registration or licensing exam for pharmacy staff, so research the rules early and keep your Indian certificates and training records ready. In India, moving up usually means a D.Pharm or B.Pharm with registration, which opens clinical, hospital and industrial pharmacy roles.

Pharmacy Technician: Frequently Asked Questions

Is pharmacy technician a good career in India?

It can be, if you enjoy careful, detailed work with medicines. Entry pay is modest and the work is structured. It can lead to registered pharmacist roles, quality and manufacturing careers, and hospital pharmacy management with further study. Your long-term growth depends most on your qualification and registration.

Can I become a pharmacy technician after Class 12 without a D.Pharm?

Yes, for assistant and store roles. Some employers accept Class 12 plus a short certificate or skill course in pharmacy or medical stores. However, dispensing as a registered pharmacist needs a D.Pharm or B.Pharm and registration with the State Pharmacy Council, so a diploma is the stronger route for a long-term career.

What is the difference between D.Pharm and B.Pharm?

D.Pharm is a two-year diploma that trains you for practical pharmacy roles. B.Pharm is a four-year degree with more science, research and clinical content. Both can lead to registration as a pharmacist, but B.Pharm offers wider options in hospital, clinical and research pharmacy and is the usual base for M.Pharm study.

Do I need to register to work as a pharmacist in India?

Yes, if you want to practise as a registered pharmacist. Registration is through your State Pharmacy Council. Delhi's council, for example, takes online applications with documents such as your Class 12 certificate, diploma marksheets and certificate, address proof and a photograph, and asks you to visit the office with originals. Check your own state's rules.

How much does a pharmacy technician earn in India?

Entry-level pay is commonly around ₹2 to ₹3 lakh a year, depending on city, employer and qualification. Pay rises with experience and registration, and can be higher in hospitals and manufacturing than in small retail shops. Treat these as rough guides and check current job listings in your city before you decide.

Can a pharmacy technician work abroad?

It is possible but not automatic. Most countries require their own registration or licensing exam for pharmacy staff, and pharmacist roles usually need recognition of your Indian qualification. Research the destination country's licensing rules early, and keep your certificates and training records ready for verification.

Is a Class 12 PCM student eligible for D.Pharm?

Many institutes accept PCM as well as PCB, but the rules vary. Check the eligibility list of each D.Pharm college and your state's pharmacy council rules. Biology is important for later pharmacy subjects, so PCB is the safer choice if you are unsure.
