A poultry veterinarian is a qualified vet who looks after the health of chickens, ducks, turkeys and other farm birds, diagnosing disease and advising farms on treatment and prevention. In India, most people enter the field through a BVSc & AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry) degree after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Poultry is one of the most important sources of meat and eggs, and most birds sold today are reared on intensive commercial farms, where one outbreak can affect thousands of birds at once. Flock health work, from vaccination and biosecurity to outbreak investigation, is therefore central to the job. Many poultry vets work with farmers, hatcheries and feed companies, while others join government animal husbandry departments.
The path is long and demanding. You need a university degree, state registration to practise, and comfort with early starts, farm visits and sometimes difficult outbreaks. Students from rural and farming families often bring a practical understanding of farm life, which helps when advising farmers.
