A railway station master is the officer in charge of a station's daily working, controlling train arrivals and departures, passenger services and the staff on duty. In India, the role is filled through the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB), and the RRB Station Master notification for 2026 is open for applications until 25 November 2026.
The official Indian Railways site announces 1,265 Station Master vacancies for 2026, although one news report gives 1,215, so check the notice on the RRB website before you apply. A student who is in Class 12 typically needs a bachelor's degree, then clears the RRB selection process and completes railway training before taking charge.
The work is demanding. A station master must keep trains safe and on time under pressure, and small lapses have large consequences. A 2026 news report of a routing lapse at CSMT Mumbai, which led to a station master's suspension and disrupted Central Railway services for about half an hour, shows how much each decision matters.
