Career as a Ropeway Engineer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A ropeway engineer designs, builds and maintains cable cars and ropeways over hill terrain; in India most enter through a civil or mechanical engineering degree.

A ropeway engineer plans, designs, builds, tests and maintains ropeways and cable cars, the aerial systems that carry people and goods over steep hill terrain. In India this work is concentrated in hill states and at pilgrimage and tourist sites, where roads are hard to build and a ropeway offers a practical link.

Ropeway work is a specialised niche within civil and mechanical engineering, so most engineers enter through a general engineering degree and learn ropeway work on the job. Large projects show the scale of demand: Adani Enterprises won the Kedarnath ropeway project with an investment of Rs 4,081 crore, reported in September 2025.

What Does a Ropeway Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Survey hill terrain and help select the route and the sites for stations and towers, working with survey and geotechnical teams.

  • Help design towers, stations, cable layouts and drive systems, and check loads and safety margins.

  • Prepare drawings, technical specifications and tender documents for contractors and suppliers.

  • Supervise foundation work, tower erection and station construction on site, checking quality against the approved design.

  • Coordinate with contractors, equipment suppliers and inspection agencies, and track schedule and budget.

  • Plan and oversee trial runs and testing before commissioning, and record the results.

  • Plan inspection and maintenance of cables, towers, drives and safety systems once the ropeway is open.

Where They Work

Ropeway engineers work for government ropeway companies and public sector undertakings. IPRCL, a government ropeway organisation, advertised Project Site Engineer posts in December 2024, and 81 posts including Project Site Engineer and General Manager in June 2025. Private developers and infrastructure groups, such as the Adani Enterprises group that won the Kedarnath ropeway, also hire engineers for large projects.

Other employers include engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractors, ropeway equipment manufacturers, state tourism and hill development bodies and engineering consultants who advise on route feasibility and design review. Most project work is in remote hill areas, so expect site postings, often for the length of a construction project.

How to Become a Ropeway Engineer in India?

After Class 12

Take Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM). This keeps the civil and mechanical engineering routes open, and maths and physics form the core of engineering entrance preparation.

Undergraduate

Complete a B.E./B.Tech in Civil or Mechanical Engineering, usually four years. Civil suits terrain, foundations and towers; mechanical suits cables, drives and machinery. Internships on hill or construction sites are valuable.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

An optional M.E./M.Tech in structural, geotechnical or machine design, or in transportation engineering, helps for design and consultancy roles. It is not required for entry-level site work.

Licence / Certification

Site safety training and ropeway-specific skills are typically gained on the job through the employer. Check current certification requirements with the employer and the relevant authority before you apply.

First Job

Entry roles include Project Site Engineer and trainee design engineer with a ropeway contractor or government ropeway company. IPRCL used GATE for Project Site Engineer recruitment in December 2024 and offline applications in June 2025, and advertised 10 Apprentice Trainee posts in February 2026, so watch notifications closely.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 in Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) is the typical route into a B.E./B.Tech in Civil or Mechanical Engineering.

  • A Diploma in Civil or Mechanical Engineering, usually three years after Class 10, can lead to site and supervisor roles, with degree study possible later.

  • Minimum marks vary by college and state, so check each institution's cut-off for admission.

Minimum Qualification

  • B.E./B.Tech in Civil or Mechanical Engineering for design, project and site engineer roles.

  • Diploma in Civil or Mechanical Engineering for some site and supervisor roles.

  • Check each recruitment notice for the exact qualification, experience and age rules, as these change from one notice to the next.

Scope and Future of Ropeway Engineer in India

Demand for ropeway engineers is project-driven. Ropeways are proposed and built in hill and pilgrimage areas, and large awards show the scale: Adani Enterprises won the Kedarnath ropeway project with an investment of Rs 4,081 crore, reported in September 2025. The Varanasi ropeway was also described as the country's first commercial ropeway in 2023. Government-backed hill connectivity projects are the main source of this work.

Public hiring is visible too. IPRCL advertised Project Site Engineer posts through GATE in December 2024, then 81 posts including Project Site Engineer and General Manager through offline applications in June 2025, and 10 Apprentice Trainee posts in February 2026. Hiring comes in waves tied to project pipelines, so do not expect steady openings every year. Build civil or mechanical skills that also transfer to roads, railways and other infrastructure.

Safety is the central test of this field. In December 2025, ropeway towers collapsed during a trial in Bihar, and the director ordered a review of design and quality. That is a reminder that design checks and trial testing are core to the job. Experienced engineers with ropeway or cable-transport experience can look at overseas infrastructure work, but check the specific markets, licensing and visa rules with each employer and country before you plan around them.

Ropeway Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the salary of a ropeway engineer in India?

Pay depends on your degree, the employer, the project and your experience. Current pay figures for this role have not been confirmed for this page, so check the stated pay scale in recruitment notices from government ropeway companies and the offer letters from private employers. Compare offers on pay, location allowances, project duration and training provided.

Can I become a ropeway engineer after Class 12?

Yes. The usual route is a B.E./B.Tech in Civil or Mechanical Engineering after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. A diploma in civil or mechanical engineering is another route into site roles. Ropeway work is specialised, so most engineers learn it on the job with a ropeway contractor, developer or government ropeway company.

Which is better for ropeway engineering, civil or mechanical?

Both are useful. Civil engineering suits towers, foundations, station buildings and site surveys. Mechanical engineering suits cables, drives, haulage machinery and safety systems. Many ropeway projects need both disciplines, so choose based on the part of the work you enjoy, and look for projects, electives or internships that involve ropeways or cable transport.

Is GATE needed to get a ropeway engineer job?

Not always. IPRCL, a government ropeway organisation, recruited Project Site Engineers through GATE in December 2024 and through offline applications in June 2025. So GATE can matter for some public recruitments. Private employers and contractors set their own selection criteria, so read the eligibility section of every notice you apply for.

Is ropeway engineering a safe career?

The work is site-based and involves heights, heavy loads and difficult terrain, so safety training and careful checks are central to the job. In December 2025, ropeway towers collapsed during a trial in Bihar, and the director ordered a review of design and quality. Engineers in this field treat design checks and trial testing as non-negotiable.

Where do ropeway engineers work in India?

They work mainly in hill states and at pilgrimage and tourist sites where ropeways are built, such as the Kedarnath ropeway project. Employers include government ropeway companies, private developers, EPC contractors, equipment manufacturers and consultants. Much of the work is in remote areas, so check the posting location carefully before you accept an offer.

Are there many ropeway engineer jobs?

Openings depend on the project pipeline, so they come in waves rather than steadily. Recent signals include the Adani Enterprises Kedarnath ropeway award of Rs 4,081 crore in September 2025 and IPRCL's 2025 recruitment notice for 81 posts, including Project Site Engineers. Track government and company notices, and build civil or mechanical skills that transfer to other infrastructure work.
