What Does a VFX Artist Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Read the script and the director's brief to understand which shots need visual effects.

  • Build 3D models of objects, characters, sets and environments.

  • Create and simulate effects such as smoke, water, fire, crowds and destruction.

  • Light, texture and render shots so digital elements match the live footage.

  • Composite (layer) effects with live-action footage, adding colour correction and clean-up.

  • Review work with supervisors and revise shots based on feedback.

  • Meet strict deadlines and keep track of file versions across the team.

Where They Work

Most VFX artists in India work in VFX studios and post-production houses that supply film, television and OTT productions, often on a project basis. Larger films and web series often use a mix of in-house and outsourced studios, and some freelancers take on shots through production houses.

Game studios hire VFX and technical artists for in-game effects and cinematics, and animation studios employ artists for both film and advertising work. Some artists also work on music videos and live events, and a few move abroad to studios in countries with large film and game industries.

How to Become a VFX Artist in India?

After Class 10

Choose Class 11 and 12 in any stream, though Science or Maths helps with the technical side. Try drawing, photography and basic video editing, and test your interest with free software such as Blender.

After Class 12

Apply to a degree or diploma in animation and VFX. Many courses ask for Class 12 marks and a portfolio or aptitude test, and design-led programmes may require a national entrance exam.

Undergraduate

Complete a B.Sc or B.Des in Animation and VFX, or a B.Tech in Graphics and Animation. Use class projects and internships to build a showreel of 3D, compositing and effects work.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Optionally take an M.Des or a specialist diploma to focus on areas such as simulation, lighting, compositing or matte painting. Short courses in industry tools like Maya, Houdini and Nuke are also common.

Licence / Certification

No licence is required. Software certifications and short courses can strengthen your profile, but a strong showreel usually matters more to employers.

First Job

Apply to studios as a junior artist, roto or compositing artist, or intern. Keep your showreel updated and learn from senior artists on live projects.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 in any stream from a recognised board. Science or Maths is useful for technical courses and B.Tech routes.

  • Art, drawing or design subjects help for B.Des and other design-led courses.

  • Many institutes take a portfolio review or aptitude test alongside Class 12 marks.

  • Cut-off marks differ by college, so check each institute's current criteria before applying.

Minimum Qualification

  • Class 12 pass is the minimum for diplomas and undergraduate courses.

  • Postgraduate courses such as M.Des need a bachelor's degree, usually in design, animation, fine arts or a related field.

  • For jobs, many studios hire on the strength of a portfolio and showreel as much as the degree.

Scope and Future of VFX Artist in India

Demand for VFX work in India is linked to films, web series, advertising and games. Regional and Hindi cinema, OTT platforms and advertisers all commission effects-heavy content, which keeps studios hiring. Growth in OTT originals and the changing gaming market has widened the range of employers beyond film studios.

Growth areas include game effects, virtual production, where digital sets are shown on large LED walls during filming, and 3D work for short-form and advertising content. Pay in gaming has drawn attention: industry reporting in 2026 questioned why entry salaries for Indian game developers have stayed flat, so compare offers carefully.

AI tools are being used for some repetitive tasks in VFX pipelines. Senior VFX leaders have publicly said AI cannot replace artists' creative judgement, so students who combine technical skill with storytelling and a clear specialisation are well placed. Some artists also move abroad to studios in markets with large film and game industries, usually after gaining experience in India or through a specialist programme.

VFX Artist: Frequently Asked Questions

Is VFX a good career in India?

VFX can be a good career for people who enjoy technical, creative work and can handle deadlines. Demand comes from films, web series, advertising and games, and studios hire through the year. Pay varies a lot by studio, city and skill, and entry-level work often involves long hours, so it suits people who are committed to building a strong showreel.

Can I become a VFX artist after Class 12 without a degree?

Yes, you can start with a diploma or a short course after Class 12, but most studios look at your showreel more than your degree. A structured course gives you guided projects, software training and feedback, which helps you build the portfolio employers ask for. You can start with free tools like Blender while you decide on a course.

Which course is best: B.Sc in Animation and VFX, B.Des or B.Tech in Graphics?

Each route can lead to VFX work. A B.Sc in Animation and VFX is more technical, a B.Des focuses more on design and visual thinking, and a B.Tech in Graphics and Animation adds computer science. Compare the syllabus, software training, faculty, placement record and fees of each college before deciding.

Do I need to be good at drawing to become a VFX artist?

Drawing is not compulsory, because many VFX jobs are technical, such as lighting, compositing and simulation. Basic art skills, an eye for colour and an understanding of light and motion do help, and some design courses include an aptitude or drawing test. Practise observing real scenes and thinking about visual storytelling.

How much does a VFX artist earn in India?

Pay varies by studio, city, experience and specialisation. Entry-level roles are usually the lowest-paid, while senior supervisors earn the most. Before accepting an offer, ask about the role, the software you will use and the project length, so you can compare offers fairly.

Will AI replace VFX artists?

AI is already used for some repetitive tasks in VFX pipelines, but creative decisions, shot quality and direction still need trained artists. Senior VFX leaders have said publicly that AI cannot replace artists. Learn to use AI tools well, and focus on a skill set that combines technical craft with storytelling.
