Career as an Addiction Counsellor in India: Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

An addiction counsellor helps people recover from substance use and behaviour addictions, such as gambling or gaming, through assessment, therapy and relapse prevention.

An addiction counsellor helps people recover from dependence on substances such as alcohol, tobacco, cannabis or opioids, and from behaviour addictions such as gambling or compulsive gaming. The work combines assessment, one-to-one and group therapy, family support and long-term relapse prevention.

Addiction is recognised as a chronic, relapsing condition, so the work is steady, long-term support rather than quick fixes. Outcomes vary widely: an estimated 35 to 54 per cent of people with a substance use disorder reach remission, usually after many years, and treatment often combines counselling with medication where an effective one exists.

Demand is growing. A de-addiction centre of excellence was launched at IMH Erragadda in Hyderabad in 2026, and Maharashtra has announced plans to set up de-addiction counselling panels in all schools and colleges. For students who want a caring, practical career, this is a field with a clear public need.

What Does an Addiction Counsellor Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Carry out intake assessments to understand a client's substance or behaviour pattern, using DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 criteria.

  • Build a personal recovery plan with the client, setting goals, identifying triggers and agreeing support steps.

  • Deliver one-to-one counselling, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing.

  • Lead group therapy and support-group sessions for clients in residential or outpatient programmes.

  • Work with families, helping them understand addiction and set healthy boundaries.

  • Plan relapse prevention and aftercare, and coordinate with psychiatrists when medication or medical withdrawal care is needed.

  • Keep confidential case notes and follow the centre's safety and reporting rules.

Where They Work

Most addiction counsellors work in rehabilitation (rehab) centres, which offer residential or outpatient care, and in de-addiction units attached to government and private hospitals. Government mental health institutes also run de-addiction services; the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) at Erragadda in Hyderabad launched a de-addiction centre of excellence in 2026.

Other employers include NGOs working with communities and young people, helplines and crisis services, and teletherapy platforms that offer online sessions. As states plan counselling panels for schools and colleges, school and college settings may also grow. Some counsellors work in corporate wellbeing and employee assistance programmes.

How to Become an Addiction Counsellor in India?

After Class 12

Choose Arts, Science or Commerce. Arts is a common route into psychology and counselling courses, since psychology is taught as a subject in many Arts streams. Build strong English and communication skills, which matter a lot in counselling.

Undergraduate

Complete a 3-year BA or BSc in Psychology, or a BA in Social Work (BSW). Choose electives in abnormal psychology, counselling or public health where offered. Volunteer with helplines, de-addiction centres or NGOs to see the work first-hand.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Complete an MA or MSc in Psychology (counselling or clinical stream), or a Master of Social Work (MSW). Look for a specialisation or diploma in addiction studies, and check that the programme includes supervised field practicum at a de-addiction centre.

Certification and Supervised Practice

Complete short certificates in motivational interviewing, brief intervention and relapse prevention, and log supervised clinical hours at a rehab centre or hospital. Our research did not confirm one national licence, so check current state and employer requirements.

First Job

Common first roles are counsellor or intake counsellor at a residential or outpatient rehab centre, a de-addiction unit, an NGO or a helpline. Growth comes with clinical experience, further qualifications and specialisation, such as dual diagnosis (addiction with depression or PTSD) or adolescent addiction.

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 in Arts, Science or Commerce is generally accepted for BA or BSc Psychology; check each university's rules.

  • Strong English and communication skills are valued more than any particular Class 12 subject.

Minimum Qualification

  • Postgraduate entry (MA, MSc or MSW) generally needs a bachelor's degree with a minimum aggregate; many universities set this around 50 per cent, so check each college.

  • Many counselling roles in rehab centres ask for a master's degree, while some accept a bachelor's degree with certification and experience.

  • Government and hospital posts follow their own recruitment rules and qualification lists, so read the job notice carefully before you apply.

Scope and Future of Addiction Counsellor in India

Demand for addiction counsellors is rising as governments and hospitals invest in treatment. In 2026, a de-addiction centre of excellence was launched at IMH Erragadda in Hyderabad, and Maharashtra has said it will set up de-addiction counselling panels in all schools and colleges. Globally, around 163 million people were estimated to have a substance use disorder in 2021. Concern is also growing about gaming: a 2018 Times of India report said six children a week sought help at the Nimhans clinic in Bengaluru for gaming addiction.

Growth is strongest in government and hospital de-addiction services, school and college programmes, NGOs working with communities, and teletherapy platforms that reach clients in smaller towns. Counsellors who build skills in dual diagnosis are better placed for senior roles, because addiction and mental health conditions such as depression, PTSD and bipolar disorder often occur together and are best treated at the same time.

Some counsellors look at work abroad. Career guides in our research list social work and therapy among roles that employers overseas seek, and Canada's immigration routes for therapists have been widely discussed. Each country sets its own licensing and experience rules, so check them early and plan for recognised qualifications and registration.

Addiction Counsellor: Frequently Asked Questions

Is addiction counselling a good career in India?

It can be a rewarding career for people who want to help others recover, and demand is rising. Government hospitals, de-addiction centres, NGOs and rehab facilities all need trained counsellors, and state programmes such as school counselling panels are expanding. Pay and growth depend on your qualification, experience and employer, so the work suits people who are patient, emotionally resilient and committed to lifelong learning.

What qualification do I need to become an addiction counsellor?

Most counsellors hold a bachelor's degree in psychology or social work. A master's degree, such as an MA or MSc in Psychology or a Master of Social Work (MSW), is commonly expected for clinical roles. Many also complete a diploma or certificate in addiction studies or motivational interviewing. Requirements vary by employer, so check each job notice carefully.

Can I become an addiction counsellor after Class 12 arts?

Yes. Arts students can join a BA in Psychology or a BA in Social Work after Class 12, and psychology courses after 12th Arts are a common route into counselling. You then continue with a master's degree, supervised practical training and a short addiction-focused certificate. Science students can also enter BSc Psychology, so the stream you choose at Class 12 does not close this path.

Do addiction counsellors need a licence in India?

India does not appear to have one national licence that every addiction counsellor must hold, and requirements can differ by state, employer and type of service. Many employers ask for a recognised degree, a certificate in addiction counselling and supervised experience. Before you enrol in a course, check current rules with the employer or the relevant state authority, as they may change.

How much does an addiction counsellor earn in India?

Pay varies with the employer, city, qualification and years of experience. Rehab centres, hospitals, NGOs and teletherapy platforms may offer different packages. We do not quote a salary figure on this page until it can be checked against current, dated sources. Entry-level roles usually pay less than senior clinical or programme roles, so compare current salary listings for your city before you decide.

Can an addiction counsellor help with gaming or internet addiction?

Yes. Counsellors work with behavioural addictions as well as substance use. Gambling disorder is the only behavioural addiction recognised as a clinical disorder in the DSM-5-TR, while the ICD-11 also classifies gaming disorder as a disorder due to addictive behaviours. Internet gaming disorder is listed in the DSM-5-TR for further study, so this area is still developing and counsellors should keep up with current guidance.

What is the difference between an addiction counsellor and a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can diagnose and prescribe medication, while an addiction counsellor provides psychological support, therapy and recovery planning. Medication is an effective option for opioid, alcohol and tobacco use disorders, but psychosocial treatment remains the main approach for stimulant use. Good recovery plans often involve both, and counsellors frequently work as part of a team with doctors.

Are there entrance exams for addiction counselling courses?

Not every course has a national entrance exam. Some master's programmes in psychology or social work admit students through university or institute tests, and interviews may also form part of selection. Check each college's admission notice on its official website for the test name, dates and eligibility before you apply.
