An automotive engineer designs, develops, tests and manufactures vehicles and their parts, from engines, brakes and transmissions to electric drivetrains, body structures and vehicle electronics. In India this is the classic entry point into vehicle design and manufacturing, and most people start with a B.E. or B.Tech in Automobile or Mechanical Engineering after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Automotive is one of India's main economic pillars. The Ministry of Heavy Industries describes the sector as a key driver of growth and says it provides direct and indirect employment to over 19 million people. The market is also shifting towards electric vehicles: Maruti Suzuki reports that total exports of its e Vitara electric SUV have passed 50,000 units.

The work is demanding. Entrance exams are competitive, the early years of study are heavy on maths and physics, and plant jobs can involve shifts and time on the factory floor. The reward is a skilled profession where you see your designs on the road. Average salary increases in India are projected at about 9.1% for 2026, according to an Aon survey.

What Does an Automotive Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Design vehicle components and systems such as engines, transmissions, suspensions, brakes and body parts using CAD software.

  • Run calculations and simulations to check strength, safety, fuel efficiency or battery performance before a part is built.

  • Build prototypes and test them on test tracks, dynamometers and in labs, then record and analyse the results.

  • Work with manufacturing teams so that designs can be produced reliably, at scale and at the right cost.

  • Check that designs meet standards for emissions, safety and quality, and fix problems found during testing.

  • Investigate field complaints or breakdowns, find the root cause and recommend design changes.

  • Coordinate with suppliers, purchase teams and other engineering departments to keep projects on schedule.

Where They Work

Most automotive engineers work for vehicle manufacturers that make cars, two-wheelers, commercial vehicles and tractors. Brands in the news such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, TVS Motor and Royal Enfield are examples of employers that run large engineering and product-development teams. Job titles differ between companies, so read job descriptions closely.

Others work for component makers that supply engines, brakes, electronics, seats and other parts; for engineering firms that test and validate vehicles; for electric vehicle fleet operators such as Trevel, which runs electric cabs in Delhi NCR; and for start-ups building new mobility products. Some work in service networks as technical or after-sales experts.

How to Become an Automotive Engineer in India?

After Class 10

Optional route: a three-year diploma in Automobile or Mechanical Engineering after Class 10 with Maths and Science. It gives practical skills and can lead to technician or assistant roles, and some diploma holders later move up to a degree.

After Class 12

Complete Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Prepare for the entrance exams your target colleges accept, such as JEE Main, state CETs or institutional tests, and check each college's eligibility and fees.

Undergraduate

Study a four-year B.E./B.Tech in Automobile or Mechanical Engineering. Focus on thermodynamics, machine design, vehicle dynamics and CAD. Take part in student vehicle or motorsport projects and look for internships with vehicle or component makers.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

A two-year M.E./M.Tech in automotive engineering, or a PG diploma, helps with specialist roles in powertrain, electric vehicles, simulation or research. GATE is commonly used for postgraduate admission in engineering.

Licence / Certification

No formal licence is needed for most design and engineering roles. Optional certifications in CAD or simulation software, or in electric vehicle technology, can strengthen your profile.

First Job

Apply through campus placements, company career pages and job portals for graduate engineer trainee or junior engineer roles. Building a portfolio of projects and internship work helps you stand out.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) for B.E./B.Tech programmes.

  • Class 10 with Mathematics and Science for diploma programmes.

  • Most B.E./B.Tech programmes do not accept Class 12 Commerce or Humanities directly; check each college's rules.

Minimum Qualification

  • A B.E./B.Tech in Automobile or Mechanical Engineering is the usual minimum for design, development and most engineer-level jobs.

  • Colleges typically ask for around 45% to 60% aggregate marks in Class 12 PCM; the exact cut-off varies by institution and category.

  • Diploma holders can often start in technician, assistant or service roles.

  • A postgraduate degree is optional for most jobs but useful for research, specialist design and teaching roles.

Automotive Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

Is automobile engineering a good career in India?

It can be, if you enjoy machines, maths and problem-solving. The Ministry of Heavy Industries describes the automotive sector as one of the main pillars of the Indian economy, and it provides direct and indirect employment to over 19 million people. Pay grows with experience and specialisation, and electric vehicles and software-driven features are adding new kinds of work. The job can involve factory floors, test tracks and tight deadlines, so talk to a working engineer or visit a plant before committing.

What is the difference between automobile engineering and mechanical engineering?

Mechanical engineering is a broad discipline covering machines, energy, manufacturing and materials. Automobile engineering focuses on vehicles, including engines, transmissions, chassis, braking, vehicle dynamics and vehicle electronics. Some colleges offer automobile engineering as a separate B.E./B.Tech branch, while others teach it as a specialisation inside mechanical engineering. Both routes can lead to automotive jobs, so compare the syllabus, labs and industry links of each course before you choose.

Can I become an automotive engineer after Class 12 Commerce?

Usually not through the standard B.E./B.Tech route, because most engineering degrees require Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. If you studied Commerce or Humanities, check each college's eligibility rules carefully. A career counsellor can help you compare the options open to you, including diploma and related degree courses.

Which entrance exam do I need for automobile engineering?

There is no single exam for every automobile engineering course. JEE Main is widely used for NITs and other participating institutes, and JEE Advanced is used for IITs. Some private universities use their own tests such as BITSAT, and some states run their own exams, such as MHT CET in Maharashtra. Check which exams each college accepts, along with its dates, because they change every year.

What is the starting salary for an automotive engineer in India?

Entry-level automotive engineers in India typically earn around ₹3 to ₹6 lakh a year, depending on the company, city, college and skills. Salaries rise with experience, and engineers who work on electric vehicles, software or simulation may earn more. Average salary increases across India are projected at about 9.1% for 2026, according to an Aon survey. Treat these figures as a guide and check current job listings before planning.

Is a diploma enough to become an automotive engineer?

A diploma in automobile or mechanical engineering can lead to technician, assistant or service roles and gives you practical skills early. For design, development and most engineer-level jobs, a B.E. or B.Tech is the usual requirement. Many diploma holders later complete a lateral-entry degree or a part-time degree while working. Choose the route that matches whether you prefer hands-on work or design and research.

Can automotive engineers work abroad?

Yes. Automotive is a global industry, and engineers work in vehicle design, testing and manufacturing overseas, often after gaining experience at home. Many students also study automotive or mechanical engineering abroad. Study guides on overseas engineering courses are widely available, but visa rules, fees and job markets change, so check them before you apply.
