Career as a Cinematographer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A cinematographer, also called a director of photography, decides how a film or OTT series looks by choosing camera, lenses, lighting and framing with the director.

A cinematographer, also called a director of photography (DoP), plans and captures the look of a film, web series or advert. They work with the director to choose the camera, lenses, lighting and camera movement for each scene.

The work sits where art meets technical skill. In India the path usually starts with hands-on work as a camera assistant on film, OTT and ad sets, and grows with a strong showreel. Formal training helps, and recent AAFT programmes in Noida and Raipur are aimed at students interested in Film and OTT careers.

The field rewards visual judgement, patience and on-set experience more than a single exam. Pay varies widely with experience, project size and the type of production.

  • Reading the script with the director to agree the visual style, mood and colour palette for the project.

  • Choosing cameras, lenses, filters and camera movement (such as a dolly, crane or gimbal) that suit each scene.

  • Designing and supervising lighting for each set or location, using both natural and artificial light.

  • Planning shots and storyboards, and deciding framing and composition scene by scene.

  • Leading the camera and lighting crew on set, including camera operators, focus pullers and gaffers.

Where They Work

Cinematographers work across feature films, web series and OTT originals, television serials, music videos, advertising films and documentaries. Film industries in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and other regional centres hire across languages, and production houses and OTT platforms commission projects in many cities.

Many work freelance, taking one project at a time through production companies, ad agencies and independent directors. Most newcomers start as camera assistants in the camera departments of established production houses, then move up as they build a body of work.

Growth areas include web series, regional-language films, ad films, music videos, corporate films and documentaries. Cinematographers who can work across formats, including drone and high-resolution digital cameras, have more options. National Award-winning cinematographer Rajeev Ravi shows that the craft is recognised at the highest level of Indian cinema.

Some cinematographers take work on international productions and co-productions, so strong English communication and a portfolio suited to global audiences can help. Check visa and work-permit rules for any country before planning a move.

Cinematographer: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a cinematographer and a director of photography?

In most Indian productions the two titles refer to the same job. The director of photography (DoP) is the senior person responsible for the film's visual look, while a cinematographer may also shoot ad films, documentaries or second units. Some crews use the titles interchangeably, so check the role in the credits or contract before you accept.

Can I become a cinematographer after Class 12?

Yes. Many students start after Class 12 with a diploma or degree in film, media or cinematography. A cinematography course such as the one offered by AAFT University in Raipur is one option, but check the duration, fees and practical equipment access before joining. Most people become working cinematographers by assisting experienced crew on sets and building a showreel over several years.

Do I need a degree to become a cinematographer in India?

No degree is strictly required, because the industry values on-set work and a strong showreel. However, a diploma or degree helps you learn camera, light and storytelling in a structured way, and some institutes ask for formal training. Many people combine short courses, college projects and assisting on professional shoots to build skills and contacts.

How much does a cinematographer earn in India?

Pay varies widely with experience, project size, platform and type of work, such as a feature film, an OTT series or an advert. Camera assistants usually earn less than an experienced director of photography. Check current salary guides and speak to working crew before making career decisions based on pay.

Is cinematography a good career for students who like photography?

Photography is a useful starting point because it trains your eye for light, framing and colour. Cinematography adds moving images, teamwork on set and working to a director's vision. If you enjoy planning shots, watching films closely and working in a team, the career may suit you. Try shooting short films and asking for feedback before you commit to a course.

What skills matter most for a cinematographer?

Technical skills include camera operation, lens choice, lighting and exposure, and basic colour grading. Soft skills matter just as much: working well with directors, staying calm on long shoot days and solving problems when weather or locations change. A clear visual style shown through a showreel often counts more with hiring crews than a single certificate.

How do I build a portfolio as a student?

Shoot short films, music videos, college projects and documentaries with friends or local groups. Keep a showreel of about two to three minutes featuring your best work, with credits that show your role. Offer to assist on local shoots to learn on set, update your showreel every year, and ask experienced cinematographers for honest feedback.

Do I need my own camera before I start?

You do not need expensive equipment to begin. A good smartphone or an entry-level camera is enough to practise composition, light and movement. Many courses and production houses provide equipment for practical work. As you progress, learning to use professional cameras, lenses and lighting, often on rented kit, matters more than owning gear.
