Career as a Facade Engineer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A facade engineer designs a building's outer skin (glass, aluminium and stone cladding) for wind, rain, fire and energy performance, usually after a civil or structural B.Tech.

A facade engineer designs the outer skin of a building, including the glass curtain walls, aluminium windows, cladding and stone panels that keep out rain and wind, control heat and glare, and stay safe for decades. The work sits between architecture, structural engineering and building services, and it is central to every high-rise tower in Indian cities.

Most people reach the role through a civil or structural B.Tech after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), often followed by a few years with a facade contractor or consultant and a postgraduate or specialist course. Architects with a B.Arch can also move into facade design, mainly on the architectural side.

What Does a Facade Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Calculate wind, seismic and dead loads on curtain walls, cladding and glazing, and size the anchors, brackets and frames that carry them.

  • Design the facade system with architects, choosing glass, aluminium profiles, stone or metal panels and sealants for strength, weather-tightness and thermal performance.

  • Check that the design meets the National Building Code of India and relevant IS codes on fire safety, wind and structural safety.

  • Prepare shop drawings and fabrication details in AutoCAD, Revit or other BIM tools so that fabricators and site teams can build the system correctly.

  • Review mock-ups and test samples for air leakage, water penetration and wind-load resistance before full production starts.

  • Coordinate with contractors on site, solve installation clashes and check quality during erection.

  • Plan access and maintenance for the finished building, such as cleaning systems, gondolas and replacement of sealants or glass.

Where They Work

Facade engineers work in specialist facade and curtain wall contractors, international and Indian structural and facade consultancies, and the design teams of large architecture firms. Major developers and project management companies also employ them on high-rise, commercial and mixed-use projects in cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Gurugram and Delhi NCR.

Some work in glass and aluminium system manufacturers, where they provide technical support and test new products. Most of the job is a mix of office design work and site visits, and the balance depends on the employer and the stage of the project.

How to Become a Facade Engineer in India?

After Class 10

Choose the Science stream with Mathematics if you are aiming for a B.Tech. Build drawing and visualisation skills, and keep B.Arch open if you enjoy both design and engineering.

After Class 12

Complete Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Appear for JEE Main, JEE Advanced for the IITs, or state entrance exams for a B.Tech in Civil Engineering. For B.Arch, prepare for NATA or JEE Main Paper 2.

Undergraduate

Complete a four-year B.Tech in Civil or Structural Engineering, or a five-year B.Arch. Take electives in structural design, building materials, steel structures and building services, and do internships with facade contractors or consultants.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

An M.Tech in Structural Engineering, Building Science or Construction Technology, or a specialist course in facade and curtain wall engineering, helps you reach design-lead roles. It is useful but not always required at entry level.

Licence / Certification

Learn BIM software such as Revit and the key codes, and consider professional membership with the Institution of Engineers (India). Green building certifications such as IGBC or LEED Green Associate add value on sustainability-focused projects.

First Job

Start as a junior design engineer or site engineer with a facade contractor, curtain wall supplier or structural consultancy. In the early years expect calculations, shop drawings, mock-up testing and site coordination before leading design work.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12 for a B.Tech in Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Mathematics is compulsory. Drawing or fine arts is helpful for the B.Arch route, which also needs Class 12 PCM.

  • Strong grounding in mechanics, structural analysis and materials is useful, and it is taught in the B.Tech syllabus.

Minimum Qualification

  • Class 12 pass with typically around 50% or more in PCM for most B.Tech colleges. Cut-offs vary by college and category, so check each institute's notice.

  • For an M.Tech: a B.E. or B.Tech in Civil or a related engineering discipline, usually with a GATE score or an institute's own admission test.

  • For most jobs: a B.Tech in Civil or Structural Engineering is the usual minimum. A diploma holder can start as a site supervisor or draughtsman and move up with experience.

Scope and Future of Facade Engineer in India

Demand for facade engineers follows high-rise, commercial, hospital, airport and mixed-use construction. As Indian cities keep building vertically, glass and cladding systems are now a standard part of many towers, and each one needs design, testing and skilled installation. Green building rating systems such as GRIHA and IGBC also reward good envelope performance, which adds work for engineers who understand energy and thermal design.

Public programmes such as the Smart Cities Mission and urban housing schemes keep construction active in many cities, and retrofit work on older buildings is growing alongside new projects. Facade maintenance and replacement of ageing glass and sealants is a steady source of work for experienced engineers.

Overseas work is open to engineers with strong design experience and local licensing. Countries in the Gulf, Singapore, Australia, the UK and Canada hire facade specialists for large projects. Most engineers gain a few years of Indian project experience first, then apply abroad with their registration and portfolio.

Facade Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a facade engineer do?

A facade engineer designs the outer walls of a building, including curtain walls, glass, aluminium windows, cladding and stone panels. They calculate the loads these elements carry, check fire and weather performance, prepare fabrication drawings and review mock-up tests. They also coordinate with architects and contractors so that the system is built and installed correctly on site.

Is a B.Tech in civil engineering compulsory to become a facade engineer?

A B.Tech in Civil or Structural Engineering is the most common route, because the job depends on structural analysis and load calculations. Architects with a B.Arch can also enter facade design, especially on the architectural and detailing side. Diploma holders usually start in site or drawing roles and move up with experience and further study.

Can an architect become a facade engineer?

Yes. Architects often work on facade concepts, materials and appearance, and many move into facade design. Engineering depth in structural loads and building performance usually needs extra study, such as an M.Tech or a specialist course. Many successful facade teams combine architects and structural engineers.

What is the salary of a facade engineer in India?

Entry-level facade engineers typically earn around ₹4 to ₹7 lakh a year, depending on the city and employer. Mid-level engineers with several years of experience can earn more, and senior facade consultants on large projects can earn considerably more. These figures are indicative and vary by company, city and project type.

Which entrance exams should I take to become a facade engineer?

For a B.Tech in Civil Engineering, JEE Main is the main national exam, with JEE Advanced for IITs and state entrance tests for state colleges. For B.Arch, NATA or JEE Main Paper 2 is needed. For an M.Tech after graduation, GATE is the usual exam. Check each college's official admission notice for current dates and cut-offs.

Is facade engineering a good career for the future?

Facade engineering is a specialist field with steady demand as high-rise and commercial buildings continue to be built and refurbished. It rewards people who enjoy detailed technical problem-solving and coordination. Growth depends on the construction cycle and on skills in BIM, energy performance and testing, so continuous learning matters.

Is facade engineering an office job or a site job?

It is both. Much of the work is design, calculation and drawing in an office, but engineers also visit sites to check mock-ups, support installation and solve problems during erection. The balance depends on the employer. Consultancies lean towards office work, while contractors involve more site time.
