Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Watch the scene repeatedly to note every sound the audience should hear, from footsteps to a door closing.
Gather props, shoes, cloth and everyday objects that sound right, even if they look different on screen.
Practise each sound until it matches the action, then record it while watching the picture so it stays in sync.
Work on different surfaces, such as marble, gravel, wood or rock floors in Foley pits, to match footsteps to each character and scene.
Create 'moves' sounds such as clothing swishes and rubbing materials, and 'specifics' such as objects being handled.
Cover up unwanted noise captured during filming, such as passing traffic, and replace incidental sounds lost when dialogue is dubbed.
Hand over recorded tracks to sound editors and dubbing mixers, who decide the final balance and which sounds stay in the film.
