Career as a Hotel Revenue Manager in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A hotel revenue manager sets room prices and sales strategy using demand data to maximise a hotel's income. In India it is usually a mid-level role built on front office or sales experience.

A hotel revenue manager decides how much each room should cost on each night, and where it should be sold, so that the hotel earns the most income possible. The job is part data analysis and part sales strategy, and it sits close to the hotel's general manager and finance team.

The work follows demand closely. A festival, a wedding season or a large conference in the city can change what guests will pay. One October 2026 ET TravelWorld report put the rise in hotel rates after Diwali at 26.94 per cent, as travellers combined family visits with leisure trips.

Most people do not start in this job. Students usually begin in front office, reservations or sales, learn how a hotel fills its rooms, and move into revenue roles after several years. A BHM or an MBA still helps, because it gives the hospitality and business base the role needs.

What Does a Hotel Revenue Manager Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Forecast room demand for the coming days, weeks and months using booking pace, past occupancy and local events.

  • Set and update room rates for each room type and date, balancing occupancy against average room rate.

  • Track competitor prices and market rates across the hotel's comparison set.

  • Manage distribution, deciding how rooms are sold through the hotel website, travel agents, online travel sites and corporate contracts.

  • Plan packages, offers and minimum-stay rules for weddings, conferences and holiday periods.

  • Review monthly reports on occupancy, average daily rate and revenue per available room, and share findings with the general manager.

  • Work with sales, front office and marketing teams so that pricing matches what the hotel can actually deliver.

Where They Work

Revenue managers work in hotels of all sizes, from large hotel chains to resorts and boutique properties. In India, hotel groups such as ITC Hotels and Marriott International, and Radisson Hotel Group, are typical employers. Marriott and Radisson both announced revenue and sales leadership appointments in 2026, according to Hotelier India.

Other employers include online travel companies, hotel management companies that run properties for owners, and revenue management consultancies that advise several hotels at once. Roles are concentrated in metro cities and in tourist destinations such as Goa, Jaipur, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh, though this should be checked against current job listings.

How to Become a Hotel Revenue Manager in India?

After Class 12

Choose the BHM or another hospitality degree. Entry is usually through NCHMCT JEE or a university test. Most programmes accept any Class 12 stream, but many ask for a minimum aggregate score, often around 50 per cent. Check each institute's notice.

Undergraduate

Complete the BHM (4 years) or the BSc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration (3 years). Use the industrial training periods to work in front office, housekeeping or sales. Build Excel and basic data skills alongside your coursework.

First Job

Start in front office, reservations, sales or food and beverage. Two to three years here teaches you how rooms are sold, how guests book and how demand moves through the year.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Add an MBA in hospitality or with an analytics specialisation, or a short revenue management certification. Revenue management and AI in hospitality are now covered in faculty development programmes, which shows where the field is heading.

Licence / Certification

No licence is needed. Learning a property management system and a revenue management system, and holding a recognised revenue management certificate, makes you more employable for analyst and manager roles.

Mid-Level Revenue Role

After several years, move into a revenue analyst role and then a revenue manager role for a property or a cluster of hotels. Senior roles such as Director of Revenue follow with further experience.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 in any stream is accepted by many hotel management programmes; check the notice for each institute.

  • English is important for guest-facing work and for writing reports.

  • Maths and commerce help with the pricing and forecasting side. They are an advantage, though usually not compulsory for BHM admission.

  • Many institutes ask for a minimum aggregate in Class 12, commonly around 50 per cent. Confirm the current figure before advising a student.

Minimum Qualification

  • Graduation: a BHM, a BSc in Hospitality or any bachelor's degree for most revenue roles.

  • Hotel experience: typically two to three years in front office, reservations or sales before a revenue analyst role, and more for a revenue manager title.

  • Data skills: working knowledge of Excel and of a property management system.

  • MBA or revenue management certificate: useful for mid-level and senior roles, though not always required.

Scope and Future of Hotel Revenue Manager in India

Demand for revenue skills follows hotel and travel growth. Senior roles are attracting attention: an Economic Times report from October 2026 noted that salaries for senior hotel roles have seen a substantial jump as hotels compete for quality talent. Hotel groups are also expanding into new destinations. ITC Hotels opened its first luxury resort in East India in Siliguri in 2025, and Marriott and Radisson have been making senior revenue and sales appointments in 2026.

Data and AI are changing the job. Hotels now expect revenue managers to work with forecasting tools and automated pricing systems, not only spreadsheets. Faculty development programmes on next-generation revenue management and AI in hospitality, such as the one hosted by IHM Rohtak in January 2026, show that colleges are responding. Candidates who combine hotel operations knowledge with analytics are likely to be the strongest.

Overseas options exist. Revenue skills transfer well to hotel groups in the Gulf, South-East Asia and Europe. Hospitality and tourism management programmes abroad are also promoted to Indian students; Spain is one such destination in 2026 reports. Before planning a move, check visa rules, work permits, programme fees and current job markets with official sources.

Hotel Revenue Manager: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hotel revenue manager?

A hotel revenue manager sets room rates, decides how rooms are sold across booking channels, and tracks demand and competitor prices to raise the hotel's income. The role combines hotel knowledge with data analysis and commercial judgement. In India it is usually a mid-level post, reached after several years in front office, reservations or sales.

Can I become a hotel revenue manager after Class 12?

You can start the path after Class 12 by joining a hotel management programme such as the BHM, which you can enter through NCHMCT JEE or a university entrance test. A revenue manager role is not usually a first job, though. Expect to work in front office, reservations or sales first, and to build revenue skills on the job or through a short certification.

BHM or MBA: which is better for revenue management?

Both routes can lead to the role. A BHM gives you hotel operations knowledge from the start and a direct route into hotel jobs. An MBA in hospitality or with an analytics specialisation suits students who want to move into revenue strategy or pricing analytics later. Many professionals do the BHM first and an MBA after a few years of work.

How much does a hotel revenue manager earn in India?

Pay depends on the hotel's size and brand, the city, and your experience. As a rough guide, an entry-level revenue analyst may earn around ₹3.5 to ₹5 lakh a year, a revenue manager for one hotel around ₹8 to ₹14 lakh, and a senior revenue director more. These ranges are indicative, so check current salary surveys before relying on them.

Do I need maths to become a hotel revenue manager?

You do not need advanced maths for a BHM, but comfort with numbers helps a great deal. Revenue work involves reading occupancy and room-rate figures, forecasting demand and comparing prices, so basic statistics and strong Excel skills matter. Students who studied maths in Class 11 and 12 find the analysis side easier, though many successful revenue managers come from commerce or humanities backgrounds.

How long does it take to become a hotel revenue manager?

A degree such as the BHM usually takes three to four years. Most people then work for several years in front office, reservations or sales before moving into a revenue role. Depending on how quickly you progress and whether you add an MBA, reaching a revenue manager title can take several years after graduation.

Can I work abroad as a hotel revenue manager?

Yes. Hotel groups operate in the Gulf, South-East Asia, Europe and elsewhere, and revenue skills transfer well between markets. Overseas hospitality programmes are also promoted to Indian students, including in Spain. Check visa rules, work permits and programme fees with official sources before you plan a move.
