Where They Work

In India, M&A analysts work mainly in the investment banking divisions of global and domestic banks, in transaction advisory and M&A teams of the Big Four and other consulting firms, and in boutique advisory firms. Deloitte, for example, lists internships on its careers site. Private equity firms and the corporate development or strategy teams of large Indian and multinational companies also hire people for similar analytical work.

Most deal roles are based in large metro cities such as Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Bengaluru. Hiring depends heavily on deal activity, so openings can rise and fall with market conditions.

Scope and Future of M&A Analyst in India

Demand for finance talent in India is visible in recent hiring news. NDTV reported in November 2025 that some finance jobs in India offer starting salaries above Rs 1 lakh a month. eFinancialCareers also reported in April 2026 on JPMorgan's 135 new managing directors, which points to continued senior appointments at global investment banks. Specific M&A demand figures should be checked before publishing.

Deal activity tends to rise with corporate restructuring, cross-border expansion and the growth of sectors such as technology and healthcare, since companies often buy or merge to grow. Training providers have also expanded investment banking courses, as shown by PW's guide to investment banking certifications and career prospects.

No government initiative specific to M&A analysts has been confirmed in our research. The skills of an M&A analyst, such as valuation, modelling and presenting to clients, are used by global banks and consultancies in many markets, so an MBA from a recognised Indian school can support applications abroad. Check visa and work rules separately for each country.

M&A Analyst: Frequently Asked Questions

What does an M&A analyst do in India?

An M&A analyst supports deal teams working on mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and sell-offs. The job involves researching target companies, building financial models to value them, reviewing financial documents during due diligence and preparing pitch books for senior bankers or consultants. Most of the work happens in investment banks, advisory firms and corporate development teams.

Can I become an M&A analyst after B.Com or BBA?

Yes. A B.Com (Hons) or BBA gives you the accounting and business base that deal teams expect. A strong academic record, Excel skills and finance knowledge can help you get an analyst role directly. Many candidates then strengthen their profile with an MBA or finance master's degree and with internships in investment banking or transaction advisory. Eligibility criteria vary by firm, so check each one.

Do I need an MBA to become an M&A analyst?

Not always, but an MBA or finance master's degree is a common route, especially at investment banks and top consulting firms. Some firms hire graduates straight into analyst roles through campus placements, while others prefer candidates with an MBA from a well-regarded institute. Internships during your degree and proven modelling skills can matter as much as the name of the degree.

How much does an M&A analyst earn in India?

Pay depends on the employer, city, degree and experience. An NDTV report from November 2025 listed some finance jobs in India with starting salaries above Rs 1 lakh a month, but we have not yet confirmed a current, sourced range for M&A analysts specifically. Check a recent salary guide before quoting figures. Pay generally rises as analysts move to associate and vice-president levels with more responsibility.

Is M&A analyst a good career for freshers?

It can be, if you enjoy finance, numbers and business news and can handle long, deadline-driven hours. The work builds fast skills in valuation, modelling and client presentations, which open doors to MBA programmes and senior finance roles. It is demanding, so think honestly about whether you are comfortable with pressure before committing to this path.

Which courses help an M&A analyst career?

Useful options include an MBA or PGDM with a finance specialisation, a B.Com (Hons) or BBA with finance electives, and short certifications in investment banking, financial modelling and valuation. Some students also explore the CFA Programme, though it needs a significant time commitment. Choose courses from recognised providers and check current fees and durations before enrolling.

How is an M&A analyst different from an investment banker?

Investment banking is the broader field, and M&A is one of its main areas. Many M&A analysts work inside investment banks, so job titles and daily tasks often overlap. The difference is focus: an M&A analyst concentrates on deal analysis, valuation and transaction documents, while an investment banker may also cover capital raising, trading or client sales.
