FMCG and consumer goods companies, retail, e-commerce and direct-to-consumer startups also hire for brand roles.

Scope and Future of Brand Strategist in India

Brands matter more when many products look alike. Many companies see branding as one of the few remaining ways to differentiate their products, and brand equity, the measurable worth of a brand, is built through consistent identity and customer experience. As Indian consumer, banking, telecom and technology companies grow, brand thinking remains central to how they compete.

Demand is strong in consumer goods, fintech, e-commerce and direct-to-consumer startups, telecom and banking, where trust in a brand shapes buying decisions. Public sector bodies have also started using branding, though researchers advise adapting private-sector brand models carefully to suit public organisations.

Our research notes do not confirm specific government schemes for this field, so none are listed here. Overseas, brand strategy roles exist in global consumer companies, advertising networks and consultancies. Indian candidates with an MBA and experience across several markets are well placed, subject to visa and work permit rules in each country.

Brand Strategist: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a brand strategist do?

A brand strategist decides how a brand should be positioned, what it stands for and how customers should perceive it. They research customers and competitors, define the brand's promise, values and personality, and write the guidelines that marketing, design and advertising teams use. The role is less about making ads and more about setting the direction that ads should follow.

What is the difference between a brand strategist and a brand manager?

A brand strategist usually sets the long-term direction, including positioning, identity and how the brand should grow. A brand manager usually runs the brand day to day, handling campaigns, budgets, launches and sales targets. In many Indian companies the two roles overlap, and the strategist title is often used for more senior people with several years of brand experience.

Which degree is best for becoming a brand strategist in India?

There is no single required degree. Many people start with a BBA, BMS or B.Com, a BA in mass communication, or a B.Des in communication design, then move into brand work through an MBA or PGDM with a marketing or brand management specialisation. A marketing MBA is a common route into corporate brand teams, while design or communication backgrounds suit agency and creative-led roles.

Is an MBA necessary to become a brand strategist?

Not always, but it helps. Many large consumer companies and consultancies recruit brand managers from MBA and PGDM programmes, and that path often leads to strategist roles. Candidates from design, mass communication or sales backgrounds can also get in through agencies, startups and smaller brands, especially with a strong portfolio, internships and proof of results.

How much does a brand strategist earn in India?

Pay depends on experience, employer and city. As an indicative range, entry-level brand roles may start around ₹5 to ₹9 lakh a year, mid-level brand managers and strategists often earn around ₹12 to ₹25 lakh, and senior brand leaders can earn well above ₹30 lakh at large companies. These are estimates, so check current salary surveys for the latest figures.

Can I become a brand strategist after Class 12 Arts?

Yes. Arts students can join BA programmes in mass communication, journalism, psychology, sociology or economics, or a BBA, and build marketing skills through internships and certifications. Arts and humanities backgrounds suit the job well because it needs an understanding of people and culture as much as numbers. An MBA or PGDM later helps you build the business side.

Do I need design skills to become a brand strategist?

You do not need to be a designer, but you need to understand design. A brand strategist briefs designers, reviews logos, colours, typography and packaging, and judges whether they fit the brand's personality. A good visual sense, clear feedback and knowledge of how brand identity works matter more than being able to design yourself.
