Career as a Mental Health Counsellor in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A mental health counsellor helps people manage stress, anxiety, grief and life challenges through regular talk-based sessions; most enter through a psychology or counselling degree.

A mental health counsellor is a trained professional who helps people work through stress, anxiety, low mood, grief, relationship problems and other everyday challenges, mainly through structured conversations. The role is different from psychiatry: counsellors do not prescribe medicines.

In India the career usually starts after Class 12 with a psychology or counselling degree, followed by a postgraduate qualification and supervised practice. Counsellors work in schools, colleges, hospitals, NGOs and online therapy platforms.

Demand is growing. Schools and colleges are under pressure to support students, and a Supreme Court-appointed national task force has recently published findings on student mental health and suicides. The work is emotionally demanding, so it suits people who are patient, curious about human behaviour and willing to keep learning.

  • Take a detailed history at the first session and agree on the person's concerns, goals and support network.

  • Identify risk, including self-harm or crisis situations, and refer clients to psychiatrists, doctors or emergency services when needed.

  • Keep accurate, confidential session notes and follow professional ethics on privacy and consent.

  • Run group sessions, workshops or awareness programmes for students, staff or community members.

  • Coordinate with teachers, parents, doctors and social workers, and review progress over time.

Where They Work

Mental health counsellors in India work in a range of settings. Schools and colleges employ counsellors to support students with academic pressure, career confusion and wellbeing. Colleges are expanding this role: IIT Bombay announced in October 2026 that it would hire 30 counsellors after a student suicide row. Hospitals, psychiatric clinics and rehabilitation centres employ counsellors within larger treatment teams.

Other employers include NGOs and community organisations, corporate employee-assistance programmes, addiction treatment centres and online therapy platforms, where counsellors see clients by video or chat. Many counsellors later run private practice once they have experience and the right qualifications and registrations.

Scope and Future of Mental Health Counsellor in India

Demand for mental health support in India is rising. The World Health Organization notes that effective prevention and treatment options exist for mental disorders, yet most people do not have access to effective care. That gap is one reason counselling roles are growing in schools, colleges, workplaces and online platforms.

Student wellbeing is a major driver. A Supreme Court-appointed National Task Force on student mental health and suicides has published its findings, and World Mental Health Day 2026 coverage has focused on student mental health. Institutions are responding with counsellor hiring, as IIT Bombay did in October 2026. Training is also broadening: recent reporting has pointed out that therapist training in India often overlooks queer experiences, which creates a need for counsellors trained in diverse needs.

Opportunities abroad exist, but rules differ by country. Guides on migrating as a therapist, such as those for Canada, point to demand for qualified counsellors, but each destination sets its own licensing and registration requirements. Check with the regulator in the country where you plan to work.

Mental Health Counsellor: Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to become a mental health counsellor in India?

Most people take about five to six years after Class 12. This includes a three-year undergraduate degree and a two-year postgraduate course in psychology or counselling. Many also complete a diploma, supervised practice hours or short certifications, which can add a few months to a year. Some people take a one-year PG diploma after graduation as a shorter route.

Can I become a mental health counsellor after Class 12 Arts?

Yes. Class 12 Arts students can usually join a BA in Psychology, and some universities offer psychology courses that explain how to become a counsellor or therapist. Science students can take B.Sc Clinical Psychology. Either way, you will usually need a postgraduate degree or diploma for professional counselling work. Strong English and a genuine interest in human behaviour help a great deal.

What is the difference between a mental health counsellor and a psychologist?

A counsellor usually works through talk-based support, often with a psychology or counselling postgraduate degree. A clinical psychologist has deeper training in psychological assessment, diagnosis and therapy, usually through a master's and sometimes an MPhil or PhD. In India, clinical psychologists are registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India. Titles and duties overlap, so check the qualifications each employer asks for.

Is a mental health counsellor the same as a psychiatrist?

No. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who completes an MBBS followed by an MD or DNB in psychiatry, and can prescribe medicines. A counsellor does not prescribe medicines and focuses on talk-based support, coping skills and personal goals. Counsellors often refer clients to psychiatrists when medication or medical assessment is needed, and the two roles work together in many hospitals and clinics.

Do I need a licence to practise as a mental health counsellor in India?

The rules depend on your title and qualifications. Clinical psychologists are registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India, and counsellors may need certification or registration through recognised professional bodies or their employer. Practising without the right qualification can create legal and ethical risk. Check current requirements with the RCI and your state government before you start practice.

Can a mental health counsellor work online?

Yes. Many counsellors now offer teletherapy through video calls, phone or secure chat platforms. Online work suits people who want flexible hours or who live far from clinics. You will need reliable internet, a private room, secure record-keeping and an understanding of data privacy rules. Some employers and platforms prefer counsellors with prior face-to-face experience.

What is the salary of a mental health counsellor in India?

Entry-level counsellors typically earn around ₹2.5 to ₹4 lakh a year, depending on the employer, city and qualification. With several years of experience, mid-level counsellors may earn around ₹4 to ₹8 lakh, and senior roles or private practice can earn more. Figures vary widely, so check current salary surveys and job postings before you decide.
