  • Collect and analyse operational data on production, inventory, turnaround times, costs and service levels.

  • Benchmark a client's performance against industry peers and set realistic improvement targets.

  • Design future-state processes using methods such as lean, Six Sigma and value stream mapping.

Where They Work

Operations consultants in India work mainly at consulting firms. These range from large global players such as Accenture and Deloitte, which have big India operations, to strategy boutiques and the consulting arms of Indian IT services firms. Many serve clients in manufacturing, automotive, FMCG, retail, e-commerce, pharmaceuticals and logistics.

After a few years of consulting, many move in-house into operations, supply chain or transformation roles at companies. Others work in global capability centres in cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, which run operations for overseas parent companies. Travel to client sites is common, and project deadlines can be intense.

How to Become an Operations Consultant in India?

After Class 10

Choose Science or Commerce in Class 11 and build strong maths and logical reasoning. Analytical thinking runs through the whole career path, from exam questions to client problem-solving.

After Class 12

Take a bachelor's degree such as BBA, B.Com (Hons), BA Economics or B.Tech in Industrial or Production Engineering. Commerce and engineering both work, and a B.Tech gives a strong base in process thinking. B.Tech admission needs PCM in Class 12.

Undergraduate

Build practical experience through internships in operations, analytics or supply chain at manufacturers, retailers or logistics companies. Learn Excel and SQL and keep a short portfolio of analysis projects.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Prepare for and clear an MBA entrance exam such as CAT, XAT, CMAT or MAT, then join an MBA or PGDM with a specialisation in Operations, Supply Chain or Business Analytics. Some schools and firms prefer one to three years of work experience first.

Licence / Certification

Optional certifications such as Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt, or a supply chain qualification, strengthen an operations profile. No government licence is required for this career.

First Job

Campus placements at consulting firms mostly target MBA graduates. BBA and B.Tech graduates may join as business or operations analysts, and an MBA can follow later with employer support or after a few years of work.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 in any stream is accepted for most BBA and business programmes.

  • B.Tech programmes need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) in Class 12.

  • Maths is useful for BBA and economics programmes, and quantitative sections of MBA entrance exams test it directly.

  • Many colleges ask for around 50% aggregate marks in Class 12 for undergraduate business programmes, and around 50% in graduation for MBA admission. Requirements vary by institute.

Minimum Qualification

  • A bachelor's degree in any discipline is the basic entry requirement for an MBA or PGDM.

  • An MBA or PGDM is the usual qualification for consultant roles at major firms, while some firms also hire engineering or commerce graduates as analysts.

Scope and Future of Operations Consultant in India

Demand for operations expertise follows the health of business investment. In its 2024 placement season, IIM Shillong reported consulting and strategy as its top recruiting sector, with a highest package of ₹71.50 lakh per year, according to a Careers360 report. That top figure is an outlier from a small group of offers, but it shows how strongly firms value management talent in this field.

Growth is coming from manufacturing upgrades, retail and e-commerce expansion, logistics projects and transformation work in banks and healthcare. Global firms also continue to place work in Asia-Pacific, a trend a 2023 Consultancy.asia report highlighted, which supports operations and analytics roles in India's global capability centres. Digital tools such as ERP systems, analytics and automation now sit inside most operations projects, so people who combine process knowledge with data skills are in the strongest demand.

Government programmes such as Make in India and production-linked incentive schemes encourage manufacturing investment, which creates operations work for consultants and their clients. After several years in India, experienced consultants can move abroad, but overseas roles usually need strong English, a recognised MBA and work-permit eligibility, and these requirements vary by country.

Operations Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions

What does an operations consultant do day to day?

An operations consultant studies how a client's processes work, from production and procurement to delivery and customer service. They gather data, interview staff, map current workflows, find delays and waste, and then recommend and help implement changes. Much of the day goes into analysis, building models and preparing presentations, along with workshops with client teams.

Can I become an operations consultant after BBA or B.Tech?

Yes, many people start after a BBA, B.Com, Economics or B.Tech degree. Most consulting firms recruit at the MBA level, so the common route is a bachelor's degree, some work experience or internships in operations or analytics, and then an MBA or PGDM. Some firms hire strong BBA or B.Tech graduates directly as business or operations analysts.

Do I need an MBA to become an operations consultant in India?

Not always, but an MBA or PGDM is the most common route. Operations roles at major consulting firms are usually filled by MBA or PGDM graduates, though some firms hire engineering or commerce graduates as analysts. An MBA with an operations, supply chain or analytics specialisation makes a profile stronger, and industry experience helps too.

How much does an operations consultant earn in India?

Pay depends on the firm, your degree, your experience and the city. As a rough guide, entry-level operations consultants may earn around ₹6 to ₹12 lakh a year, mid-level professionals around ₹15 to ₹30 lakh, and senior managers more. Top MBA placements at elite schools can be much higher. Treat these as indicative ranges and check recent placement reports from the colleges you are considering.

How is operations consulting different from management consulting?

Operations consulting focuses on how a company runs its processes, costs, plants, warehouses and supply networks. Management consulting is a broader term that also covers strategy, organisation design, marketing and finance. Many operations consultants begin inside a general management consulting firm and then move into an operations practice, so the two careers overlap a lot.

Which entrance exams should I prepare for to enter an MBA in operations?

CAT is the main national exam for the IIMs and other top business schools. XAT, CMAT and MAT are used by many other management institutes, and GMAT is used for MBA programmes abroad and some Indian schools. Check each college's list of accepted exams, because they differ. Strong maths, logical reasoning and Excel skills help in every one of these tests.
