Career as a Paralegal in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A paralegal supports lawyers by researching cases, drafting documents, managing court filings and client files, usually without holding a law licence.

A paralegal is a trained legal professional who supports lawyers and courts by researching case law, preparing documents, managing filings and keeping case files in order. In India, paralegals work in law firms, legal aid bodies, corporate legal teams and government offices, and most do not practise law themselves.

For law students and graduates who are not yet practising, paralegal work is a practical first step into courts and law firms. District Legal Services Authorities advertised paralegal volunteer posts in early 2026, including 121 posts in Almora and 125 in Korba, so public legal aid is one of several routes in.

Pay, hours and training vary a lot between employers, and there is no single regulated paralegal licence in India. Before you accept a role, check the pay terms, the work you will actually do and whether you will get supervised training.

What Does a Paralegal Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Research case law, statutes and past judgments for lawyers preparing arguments.

  • Draft notices, affidavits, petitions and other documents under a lawyer's supervision.

  • Prepare, file and track court documents, and keep note of hearing dates and cause lists.

  • Maintain case files, document indexes and records so they can be found quickly.

  • Coordinate with clients, witnesses and government offices to collect the documents a case needs.

  • In corporate legal teams, review contracts, run due diligence checks and track compliance deadlines.

  • In legal aid bodies, help clients who cannot afford a lawyer understand their case and the steps ahead.

Where They Work

Most paralegals in India work in law firms and chambers, from small practices attached to district courts to large firms in metro cities. Corporate legal departments of banks, insurers, listed companies and startups also hire paralegals for contract, compliance and documentation work.

Public legal aid is another major route. District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) recruit paralegal volunteers to help legal aid clients at the district level. Some of these roles are volunteer posts, so check whether a post is paid before you apply. NGOs and government departments with legal work also hire paralegals.

How to Become a Paralegal in India?

After Class 12

Complete Class 12 in any stream. Humanities and commerce give useful background for law, but no single stream is compulsory for most paralegal roles.

Undergraduate

Complete a graduation degree. If you want a law path, you can take an integrated five-year course such as BA LLB or BBA LLB after Class 12, or a three-year LLB after graduation.

Paralegal Certificate or Diploma

Short paralegal courses can build practical skills in legal research, drafting and court procedure. A Sector Skill Council launched a paralegal course with LawSikho in February 2025. Check the syllabus, duration, fee and placement support before you enrol.

Internship or Volunteer Work

Work at a law firm, a court or a District Legal Services Authority to learn court procedure and file handling. DLSA paralegal volunteer posts are advertised through official notices, and the DLSA Almora and DLSA Korba notices in 2026 both asked for offline applications.

First Job

Apply to law firms, legal aid bodies, corporate legal teams or NGOs for paralegal or junior legal assistant roles. Keep a folder of sample research notes and drafts (without confidential client details) to show at interviews.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • No single stream is compulsory for paralegal roles. Class 12 in arts, commerce or science can all lead to entry-level work.

  • For an LLB, admission usually requires a graduation degree (for a three-year LLB) or Class 12 (for an integrated five-year course), plus a qualifying entrance test or merit-based selection.

  • Strong reading and writing skills in English, and basic computer skills, matter more than any particular subject.

Minimum Qualification

  • Requirements vary by employer. Check each job notice, because DLSA paralegal volunteer posts set their own eligibility criteria.

  • A law degree is not required for most paralegal roles, but it helps with career growth.

  • To practise as an advocate in court, you need an LLB and enrolment with a State Bar Council. Paralegals support lawyers and do not appear in court as advocates.

Scope and Future of Paralegal in India

Demand for paralegals is steady because courts, legal aid services and law firms all depend on careful documentation and case management. District Legal Services Authorities advertised paralegal volunteer posts in 2026, showing that public legal aid continues to recruit at the district level. No official growth figure for paralegal jobs was confirmed for this page.

Corporate legal work is a growing area for paralegals. Banks, insurers, listed companies and startups need people who can handle contracts, compliance checks and documentation. Legal education is also expanding: IGNOU revamped its legal courses in 2026 and is drawing working professionals, which shows that structured legal learning is in demand. Public debate about legal education quality and the working conditions of junior lawyers means that candidates should check pay, hours and training before accepting any role.

There is no government scheme specific to paralegals confirmed in our research. The main public route is the legal aid system run through DLSAs. Overseas options exist: a youth from Bongaigaon in Assam was reported in January 2025 to have landed a paralegal role at a London law firm. Overseas roles usually depend on work rights and local requirements, and a 2024 proposed class action in Canada alleged that one paralegal programme set its students up to fail, which is a reminder to check course outcomes carefully.

Paralegal: Frequently Asked Questions

Is paralegal a good career in India?

It can be, especially as a first step into law. Paralegal work gives you daily exposure to courts, case files and legal drafting, which helps you decide whether to pursue an LLB or a legal career. Pay and working conditions vary a lot between employers, so check the role, the hours and the learning opportunities before you accept.

What is the salary of a paralegal in India?

Pay varies widely by employer, city and experience, and the salary figures for this page are still being verified. Entry-level roles in law firms may pay differently from corporate legal teams, and some legal aid volunteer posts may offer little or no pay. Check the job notice for the pay terms, and ask about hours and any stipend before accepting.

Can I become a paralegal after Class 12?

Yes, some entry-level and volunteer roles accept candidates after Class 12, but many employers ask for a graduation degree. A paralegal certificate or diploma can help you show practical skills. If you want to become a lawyer, you can join an integrated five-year law course such as BA LLB after Class 12 instead.

Do I need an LLB to become a paralegal?

No. Most paralegal jobs do not require an LLB, and many people work as paralegals after graduation or while studying law. An LLB is required, however, if you want to enrol with a State Bar Council and practise as an advocate. Paralegals support lawyers and do not appear in court as advocates.

What is a paralegal volunteer?

A paralegal volunteer is a role, often with a District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), where you help legal aid clients and courts at district level. In 2026, DLSA Almora advertised 121 paralegal volunteer posts and DLSA Korba advertised 125, both with offline applications. Read the official notice for eligibility, the selection process and whether the post is paid.

Is a paralegal course worth the fee?

It can be, if the syllabus is practical and the provider is credible. Check the duration, fee, faculty, practical training and placement support before you pay. A proposed class action in Canada in 2024 alleged that one paralegal programme set its students up to fail, so ask for verifiable outcomes and speak to past students.

Can Indian paralegals work abroad?

Some do. In January 2025, a youth from Bongaigaon in Assam was reported to have landed a paralegal role at a London law firm. Overseas roles usually depend on the country's work rights and may need local certification or further study, so research the specific country's requirements before you apply.

How is a paralegal different from a lawyer?

A lawyer, once enrolled as an advocate, can give legal advice, represent clients and argue in court. A paralegal works under the supervision of lawyers, handling research, drafting, filing and case records. Paralegals support the legal work but do not give independent legal advice or appear in court.
