Career as a Quantum Hardware Engineer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A quantum hardware engineer designs, builds and controls the cryogenic chips, qubit electronics and control systems that run quantum computers; in India most start with a B.Tech.

A quantum hardware engineer designs, builds and controls the physical systems that run a quantum computer, including cryogenic chips and the electronics that operate them. The work sits where physics meets electronics engineering, and in India it is usually entered through a B.Tech in electronics, electrical or quantum engineering.

Quantum chips such as qubits often need to be kept at extremely low temperatures, close to absolute zero, so the job covers cooling systems, wiring, shielding and the microwave equipment that sends signals to the chip and reads its results. Much of the work happens in labs, where engineers test, measure and improve each part of the system.

Quantum technology is a growing national priority. Quantum science now appears in new B.Tech programmes at IITs, and the government has named quantum technology, alongside AI and semiconductors, as a major frontier for India. For students who enjoy physics and hands-on electronics, this is an early-stage field with room to grow.

What Does a Quantum Hardware Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Design and test the cryogenic hardware, such as cryostats, wiring and shielding, that keeps quantum chips at very low temperatures.

  • Design or test qubit chips and the superconducting or semiconductor devices they are built from, working with physicists on the device design.

  • Build and calibrate the microwave and RF chain that sends control signals to qubits and reads back their results.

  • Develop control electronics and test automation scripts that run experiments and log measurements.

  • Troubleshoot noise, heating and signal loss in lab setups and document the fixes for the wider team.

  • Coordinate with physicists, software engineers and vendors to make sure hardware meets the specifications of each experiment or machine.

  • Write test reports and technical documentation, and follow lab safety rules for cryogenic gases and high voltages.

Where They Work

Quantum hardware engineers in India are most likely to work in research institutions and university labs, including IITs that run quantum programmes. Publicly backed facilities, such as the open-access quantum computer announced for Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh, are another likely workplace for this role.

Companies in electronics, semiconductors and deep-tech start-ups that build quantum systems or their components also hire for these roles. Work at these employers often focuses on testing, cryogenic systems or control electronics, depending on the company's product.

Scope and Future of Quantum Hardware Engineer in India

Quantum technology is now part of national planning. Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman has named quantum technology, alongside AI and semiconductors, as the next major frontier for India, and India aims to be a global leader in quantum technology patents by 2035. Hardware is where many of these patents and products begin, because a quantum computer is only as good as its chips, cooling and control electronics.

IIT Mandi launched new B.Tech programmes in 2026, including a B.Tech in Quantum Science and Engineering, and IIT Madras joined the IBM Quantum Network in 2022. Andhra Pradesh announced that the country's first open-access quantum computer would open in Amaravati from 14 April 2026, creating a local base for hardware and test work.

Quantum hardware is a global field, so postgraduate study and research experience can open opportunities beyond India. Specific countries, visa routes and overseas pay were not covered in our research for this page, so these should be added after a check.

Quantum Hardware Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a quantum hardware engineer do?

A quantum hardware engineer designs, builds and tests the physical parts of a quantum computer. This includes the chips that hold qubits, the cryogenic systems that keep them near absolute zero, and the microwave electronics that control and read them. Much of the work happens in labs, where engineers run experiments and improve the reliability of each component.

Can I become a quantum hardware engineer after Class 12 in India?

Yes. The usual route is to finish Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, then join a B.Tech in quantum science, quantum computing, electronics or electrical engineering. Some colleges now offer dedicated quantum B.Tech programmes, such as the one IIT Mandi launched in 2026. Check each college's official admission page for the entrance exam and eligibility before you apply.

Which B.Tech course is best for quantum hardware?

There is no single best course. A B.Tech in Quantum Science and Engineering or Quantum Computing is the most direct fit. An Electronics and Communication or Electrical Engineering degree also builds strong hardware skills and can be followed by a quantum-focused M.Tech or PhD. Choose based on the labs, faculty and project work each college offers.

Do I need a PhD to work in quantum hardware?

Not always. Many engineering roles in testing, cryogenics, RF and control electronics start with a B.Tech or M.Tech. Research scientist roles and leading lab positions usually expect a PhD or strong research experience. Your choice depends on whether you want to design new hardware or build and run the systems that others use.

Is quantum hardware engineering a good career in India?

The field is growing. Quantum technology is a national priority, and new B.Tech programmes started in 2026. However, the number of jobs is still small compared with software or core engineering, so success depends on strong fundamentals, lab experience and often postgraduate study. Compare the work with your interest in physics and hardware before you decide.

What is cryogenic engineering in quantum computing?

Cryogenic engineering deals with systems that work at extremely low temperatures. Many quantum chips must run close to absolute zero to keep their quantum states stable. Cryogenic engineers design the cooling systems, wiring and shielding that make this possible, making it one of the most specialised parts of quantum hardware work.

How much does a quantum hardware engineer earn in India?

We have not yet verified a salary range for this role, so no figure is given on this page. Pay is usually linked to the wider electronics and R&D engineering market and rises with experience, postgraduate research and leadership. Check current job listings and salary surveys for live figures before planning around a number.

Which colleges in India offer quantum programmes?

IIT Mandi launched a B.Tech in Quantum Science and Engineering in 2026, alongside other new B.Tech programmes. IIT Madras has joined the IBM Quantum Network, which signals quantum research activity. Check each institute's official website for current quantum programmes, intake and fees, as our research has not yet covered a full list.
