Career as an Analog IC Design Engineer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

An analog IC design engineer designs and tests the analog circuits on a chip, such as amplifiers, voltage regulators and data converters, that connect it to the real world.

An analog IC design engineer designs the analog circuits inside a chip, such as amplifiers, voltage regulators, oscillators and data converters, that handle real-world signals like voltage, current, sound and radio. In India, this work sits in semiconductor design houses, fabless chip companies and the design centres of global firms.

Analog design relies heavily on engineering judgement and hands-on lab work, which is why it is often described as harder to automate than digital design. Recent 2026 coverage of India's semiconductor boom, including a Shiksha guide to B.Tech courses for the sector published in October 2026, points students towards electronics and VLSI-related degrees.

Most people enter through an electronics, electronics and communication (ECE) or VLSI-related B.Tech. They then build analog design skills through an M.Tech, a postgraduate diploma or a certification, and by working inside a design team.

What Does an Analog IC Design Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Design analog circuits such as amplifiers, filters, voltage references, low-dropout regulators and data converters at transistor level.

  • Simulate circuit behaviour using SPICE-based circuit simulators to check gain, noise, power consumption and stability across process and temperature variations.

  • Work with layout engineers to place and route the circuit on silicon, checking matching and parasitic effects that can change performance.

  • Define specifications and interfaces together with digital, verification and system teams so the analog blocks fit the whole chip.

  • Run post-layout simulations and review results before a design is sent for fabrication.

  • Bring up and debug fabricated chips in the lab, find the cause of any failure and propose design fixes for the next revision.

  • Document designs, write test plans and present results in internal design reviews.

Where They Work

Most analog IC design jobs in India are with fabless semiconductor companies that design chips for global customers, and with the Indian design centres of multinational chip firms, often called global capability centres. Design services companies that build chips for other businesses also hire analog engineers.

Other employers include start-ups working on power management, sensors and wireless devices, consumer electronics, automotive and telecom companies with in-house chip teams, and research labs at institutes such as the IITs. Roles at all of these employers vary in size, from small teams building one block to large programmes building complete chips.

Scope and Future of Analog IC Design Engineer in India

Semiconductors are one of the most closely watched careers in India in 2026. Recent articles on semiconductor jobs describe a boom that has created new openings across chip design, manufacturing and services, and many students are now looking at electronics and VLSI courses for this reason.

Government incentives and a growing number of industry players are shaping the sector, as covered in recent overviews of India's semiconductor industry. Analog design stays a specialised skill because power management, sensors and wireless devices all need analog circuits, which supports steady demand for trained designers.

Analog design skills are also portable. Design teams in countries such as the United States, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and across Europe hire for similar roles, and many Indian engineers work in global design centres. Overseas pay, visa and immigration rules change often, so check current conditions before planning a move.

Analog IC Design Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What does an analog IC design engineer do?

An analog IC design engineer designs circuits such as amplifiers, voltage regulators and data converters that handle real-world signals on a chip. The work includes circuit design, simulation, working with layout engineers and debugging fabricated chips in the lab. It needs strong circuit theory and patience, because much of the job is testing and refining designs.

Which B.Tech is best for becoming an analog IC design engineer?

Electronics and Communication Engineering is the most common route, and B.Tech programmes in VLSI Design and Technology or IC Design and Technology are more specific to chip design where they are offered. Choose a course with strong analog electronics, semiconductor devices and circuit labs. Check the curriculum before you choose, as course content differs between colleges.

Can I become an analog IC design engineer without a VLSI degree?

Yes. Many engineers enter from ECE or electronics degrees and then build analog design skills through postgraduate study, short courses and projects. Employers mainly look for solid circuit fundamentals and hands-on tool experience. Showing a project in simulation or chip design makes a clear difference when you apply.

Is analog IC design harder than digital IC design?

Analog design is different rather than simply harder. It depends on understanding how transistors behave in detail, and results can change with small variations in layout, temperature and process. Digital design is more automated. Many students find analog work rewarding if they enjoy circuit intuition and careful debugging.

How much does an analog IC design engineer earn in India?

We are still verifying current salary figures for this role, so this page does not quote a number yet. Starting pay varies by company, city, degree and skills. Check recent salary surveys and current job offers, and compare total pay, including training and growth opportunities.

Do I need an M.Tech to become an analog IC design engineer?

An M.Tech is not always compulsory, but many employers prefer candidates with postgraduate study for analog roles, especially complex ones. It helps you learn deeper device physics and design methods. Some engineers get experience first, then study part-time or take a specialised programme to move into senior analog roles.
