Where They Work

Most Android developers in India work in IT services firms that build apps for banks, retailers, insurers and other clients, and in product companies that own their apps. Fintech, e-commerce, edtech and health companies also hire Android developers for their consumer apps.

Android skills are also needed in device and platform work, such as phone makers, car companies building Android Automotive systems, wearable and TV teams and firms working on Android XR. Experienced developers also take freelance or agency work, and some publish their own apps on Google Play.

How to Become an Android Developer in India?

After Class 10

Choose Science with Maths in Classes 11 and 12 if you plan a B.Tech route. Start with basic programming logic in a beginner language such as Python or Java to test your interest.

After Class 12

Enrol in a B.Tech or B.E. in Computer Science or Information Technology, or a BCA or B.Sc in Computer Science. Choose a programme that teaches programming, data structures and app development. Entry depends on each college's process.

Undergraduate

Learn Java and Kotlin, object-oriented programming and databases. Install Android Studio, the official IDE, and build small apps such as a to-do list, a calculator or a notes app.

Build Projects and Publish

Learn Android architecture such as MVVM, Jetpack libraries, REST APIs and Firebase. Build three to five portfolio apps and publish at least one on Google Play by following the official release process.

Postgraduate and Specialisation (optional)

An MCA or M.Tech can help for product, research or platform roles. Specialise in Wear OS, Android Automotive, Android XR or Android framework (AOSP) work if you want a niche.

First Job

Apply for junior Android or mobile developer roles with a portfolio of live apps and a GitHub profile. Expect technical interviews covering Kotlin, the activity lifecycle and coding problems.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 Science with Physics and Maths is the usual route to a B.Tech or B.E. in Computer Science or IT.

  • Commerce and Arts students can enter through BCA or a B.Sc in Computer Science. Many BCA programmes accept any stream, but check whether Maths is required.

  • Basic coding practice from Class 11 onwards helps, whatever stream you take.

Minimum Qualification

  • Class 12 pass from a recognised board for a bachelor's degree programme.

  • A bachelor's degree (B.Tech, BCA or B.Sc in Computer Science) is the most common entry qualification for employers.

  • Many employers also look for a portfolio of working apps alongside the degree.

  • Minimum marks are set by each college or entrance process. Check the cut-off for the programme you want.

Scope and Future of Android Developer in India

Android is the most used operating system on smartphones. According to Wikipedia, it has the largest installed base of any operating system, with over three billion monthly active users and about 45% of the global operating system market. Apps keep needing developers to build, maintain and update them, including for new releases such as Android 17 (June 2026).

Android now runs on TVs (Android TV), cars (Android Automotive and Android Auto), smartwatches (Wear OS) and VR headsets (Android XR). Developers who learn these platforms, or combine Android skills with cloud services and AI features, have more niches to work in.

Developers with strong portfolios and good English can look for remote or overseas roles, since the core skills transfer across countries. Government and public-sector app projects are another source of work, though their scale should be checked before you plan around them.

Android Developer: Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Android developer?

An Android developer builds, tests and publishes apps for Android devices. They write code, usually in Kotlin or Java, use Android Studio, and connect apps to servers and databases. Their work ends with the app being released on Google Play and then maintained after launch as Android versions change.

Can I become an Android developer after Class 12?

Yes. Students can enter through a B.Tech or B.E. in Computer Science or IT, or a BCA or B.Sc in Computer Science. Start learning Kotlin or Java while you study, build a few apps and publish at least one on Google Play. A strong portfolio often matters as much as the degree when you apply for a first job.

Is a B.Tech necessary to become an Android developer?

No, but a degree is the most common route. Many developers come from BCA or B.Sc backgrounds, and some are self-taught. Without a degree, you need a strong portfolio of working apps, solid Kotlin and Java skills and the ability to clear technical interviews. Many employers still ask for a bachelor's degree, so check job listings in your area.

Should I learn Kotlin or Java first?

Learn Kotlin first if you are starting now. Google has named Kotlin its preferred language for Android app development since May 2019, and Java is still supported. Java knowledge helps when you read older codebases, so pick it up later. Both work in Android Studio, so moving between them is easy once you know one well.

What is the difference between an Android developer and a web developer?

A web developer builds websites and browser-based tools, usually with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. An Android developer builds installed apps for Android devices, using Kotlin or Java and Android-specific tools such as Android Studio. Both roles use programming logic and databases, so skills can overlap, but device features, performance limits and the Google Play release process are specific to Android.

How much does an Android developer earn in India?

Pay depends on experience, city, company type and skills, so no single figure fits everyone. Product companies and service firms can pay differently, and specialised roles may pay more. Check current salary data from job portals and recent offers, and compare the total package, including bonus and benefits, before deciding.

Is Android development a good career in India?

Android remains one of the most used mobile platforms in the world, so demand for skilled developers is steady. Long-term success depends on keeping your skills current, building real apps and choosing a niche such as automotive, wearables or TV. The career suits students who enjoy building products people use every day and who keep learning new tools.

Do I need to be good at maths to become an Android developer?

You need comfort with logic rather than advanced maths. Most app work involves problem-solving, handling data and writing clear code structure. Maths matters more for certain specialisations, such as graphics, sensors or game physics. If you studied Science with Maths in Class 12, you have a useful base for a B.Tech route.
