An automotive powertrain engineer designs, develops and tests the systems that make a vehicle move: engines, transmissions and, increasingly, electric drivetrains. In India, most people enter the field through a B.E. or B.Tech in Automobile or Mechanical Engineering after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

The work sits at the heart of the vehicle. A powertrain team decides how power is produced, how it reaches the wheels, how efficient and clean the system is, and how it performs in everyday driving from city traffic to highways.

This page covers what the role involves, the education route, entrance exams, colleges, skills and the career outlook. It is a good fit for students who enjoy maths, physics, machines and hands-on testing.

What Does an Automotive Powertrain Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Designing engine, transmission and electric drivetrain components using CAD software

  • Running simulations (CAE) to check strength, heat, noise and efficiency before building a physical part

  • Building prototypes and testing them on dynamometers, test tracks and in climate chambers

  • Calibrating engine and motor control software for performance, emissions and smooth driving

  • Working with emissions and safety teams so designs meet BS-VI and other regulatory norms

  • Analysing test data, finding root causes of faults and recommending design changes with suppliers

  • Supporting cost reduction and production launch of a new engine or EV drive unit

Where They Work

Most powertrain engineers work for vehicle manufacturers (OEMs) and their in-house R&D centres. Mahindra & Mahindra, which features in current industry coverage, is one example. Other large Indian vehicle makers, including Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor India, also run powertrain engineering teams.

Tier-1 automotive suppliers (for example Bosch, Continental and Cummins) hire powertrain engineers for engines, drive units and components. EV start-ups, engineering services firms, testing and certification agencies, and research bodies such as ARAI in Pune also employ engineers in this area.

How to Become an Automotive Powertrain Engineer in India?

After Class 10

Choose the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Classes 11 and 12. Strong maths and physics form the base for thermodynamics, mechanics and machine design. Basic drawing or CAD practice helps if you enjoy building things.

After Class 12

Appear for national or state engineering entrance exams (see the entrance exams section) and apply for a B.E./B.Tech in Automobile or Mechanical Engineering. Counselling and seat allotment follow the exam results.

Undergraduate

Complete a four-year B.E./B.Tech. Focus on thermodynamics, internal combustion engines, vehicle dynamics and machine design. Take projects on engines, EV drives or vehicle testing, and look for internships at vehicle makers and suppliers.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

An M.E./M.Tech in Automotive Engineering, IC Engine Engineering or Thermal Engineering helps for design, simulation and calibration roles. Some research and public sector jobs use GATE scores, while many private employers run their own selection.

Licence / Certification

Short certifications in EV powertrain systems, battery management, CAE tools or emissions testing can strengthen your profile after graduation. A certificate supports a degree but does not replace it.

First Job

Apply through campus placements, OEM graduate programmes, supplier campus drives and job portals. Early roles are usually junior testing, validation, design or calibration positions where you learn on live projects.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 in the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) is the standard route

  • Diploma holders in Automobile or Mechanical Engineering may be eligible for lateral entry into the second year of a B.E./B.Tech, subject to each college's rules

Minimum Qualification

  • A minimum aggregate in Class 12 is typically set by the university, state board or entrance exam; cut-offs vary widely by college

  • A B.E./B.Tech in Automobile, Mechanical or a related engineering branch is the usual minimum qualification for an engineer role

  • A postgraduate degree helps for simulation, calibration and research roles but is not always required for entry-level jobs

Scope and Future of Automotive Powertrain Engineer in India

Demand for powertrain engineers in India depends on two trends: the continued production of internal combustion engines for the domestic market, and the fast-growing shift to electric and hybrid drivetrains. Industry coverage in 2026 lists EV careers among the most discussed engineering paths, and many career guides now feature EV courses. Engineers who understand both combustion and electric systems are in a strong position.

Growth is visible in battery electric vehicles, hybrid systems, EV charging and battery management, and in electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Government EV policy and emission norms are pushing OEM investment, but the pace differs by vehicle segment. Engineers working on hybrid and EV drive units are likely to see the most change over the coming decade.

Abroad, vehicle makers and suppliers in countries such as Germany, Japan, the USA, South Korea and China employ powertrain engineers. Experience with global emission standards and EV platforms can support overseas roles, though a relevant master's degree, work experience and country-specific visa rules usually apply.

Automotive Powertrain Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

Is automotive powertrain engineering a good career in India?

It can be, if you enjoy hands-on engineering, testing and problem-solving. The field is wide, since traditional engines, transmissions, hybrid systems and EV drivetrains all need engineers. Work is often in OEM R&D centres or supplier companies and includes long test cycles and deadlines near vehicle launches. Pay and growth depend on your skills, specialisation and employer, so compare offers carefully.

Which B.Tech branch is best for becoming a powertrain engineer?

Automobile Engineering is the most direct route. Mechanical Engineering is equally common and gives a strong base in thermodynamics, machine design and fluid mechanics. Choose a branch with an automotive or IC engine elective, and do projects or internships related to vehicles. Electrical or Electronics Engineering helps with EV drive units and power electronics.

Can I become a powertrain engineer after a diploma?

In many cases, yes. A diploma in Automobile or Mechanical Engineering can lead to lateral entry into the second year of a B.E./B.Tech, subject to each college's admission rules. Some diploma holders also start as technicians or test assistants and move up with further study. Check the lateral entry rules of your target college before applying.

Do I need GATE to get a job as a powertrain engineer?

No, GATE is not required for most private sector jobs. It is mainly used for M.Tech admission to IITs and other institutes, and it is also used in some public sector recruitment. Many companies run their own selection process, with campus interviews, technical tests and personal interviews.

Will petrol and diesel engine jobs disappear because of EVs?

Not overnight. Engines remain important in India, and hybrid systems depend on combustion engines too. However, demand is shifting towards electric drivetrains, so engineers should build skills in batteries, motors and power electronics alongside combustion knowledge. Keeping your skills current is the safest long-term approach.

What is the salary of an automotive powertrain engineer in India?

Salary depends on experience, employer, city and whether the role focuses on traditional engines or EV drive systems. Current salary figures for this role are being verified for this page. Check recent salary surveys and current job listings, and compare offers across employers before you decide.
