Career as a Cloud Engineer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A cloud engineer designs, builds and runs computing systems on AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud; in India many enter through a B.Tech or BCA plus a cloud certification.

A cloud engineer designs, builds and runs computing systems on platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Instead of buying physical servers, companies rent computing power, storage and networking over the internet, and cloud engineers make that infrastructure reliable, secure and cost-effective.

For a student in India, this is one of the more accessible tech careers. Many people enter through a B.Tech in Computer Science or IT, or through a BCA, and then add cloud certifications and hands-on projects. The work suits people who enjoy solving problems, working with networks and operating systems, and keeping complex systems running smoothly.

Scope and Future of Cloud Engineer in India

Demand for cloud skills is strong. A TeamLease Digital analysis, reported by The New Indian Express in September 2026, put India's talent gap in GenAI and cloud at 53-60%. Sectors that are digitising, from banking and insurance to retail, health and government, need people who can run cloud systems safely.

Growth is strongest in IT services firms that deliver cloud migration projects, in product companies and fintechs, and in global capability centres in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai that run cloud operations for overseas parent companies. Public-sector digital programmes, including Digital India, also create cloud and data-centre work.

Cloud skills travel well. Cloud engineers are hired in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and the Gulf, though visa rules and local certification requirements change often, so check the current position before planning a move. The main long-term change is automation, so engineers who keep up with automation, security and AI-assisted operations are likely to stay most valuable.

Cloud Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a cloud engineer do?

A cloud engineer builds and looks after a company's computing resources hosted on platforms like AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud. The work covers setting up servers, storage and networks, automating deployments, monitoring performance, keeping costs under control and making sure systems stay secure and available. Cloud engineers usually work closely with developers and security teams, so clear communication matters as much as technical skill.

Can I become a cloud engineer after BCA?

Yes. A BCA is a common route, especially if you are strong in programming and networking. Many BCA graduates start in support or junior roles and then move up. To improve your chances, learn Linux, Python and at least one cloud platform, and complete an entry-level certification such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals. An MCA or a cloud-focused PG diploma can help later, though employers mostly judge practical skill and projects.

Is a B.Tech necessary to become a cloud engineer?

No. A B.Tech helps, but it is not the only route. Employers look at what you can do: Linux administration, networking, scripting and hands-on work with a cloud platform. Many people with a BCA, a BSc in Computer Science or a diploma move into cloud roles after certification and project work. A B.Tech in Computer Science or IT does make campus placements and first jobs easier at many large IT firms, so it remains the most common route.

Which cloud certification should a fresher take first?

Most freshers start with a foundation-level certification such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900). These cover core cloud concepts and cost basics without needing deep experience. Once you have some hands-on work, associate-level exams such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate or Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer carry more weight. Choose the platform that the companies you want to join use most.

How much does a cloud engineer earn in India?

Entry-level cloud engineers in India typically earn around ₹4 to ₹7 lakh a year, depending on the city, employer and skills. With three to six years of experience, pay commonly moves to around ₹10 to ₹20 lakh a year, and senior architects or specialists can earn well above that. Pay tends to be higher at product companies, global capability centres and firms hiring for certified, hands-on cloud skills. Figures vary widely, so check current job listings before negotiating.

Is cloud engineering a good career in India?

It can be, if you enjoy systems and troubleshooting and are willing to keep learning, because cloud platforms change quickly. Demand is strong: a recent industry analysis reported a large talent gap in cloud and generative AI skills in India. Pay rises with experience and certification, and cloud skills transfer across employers and countries. The trade-offs include on-call duties, pressure during outages and the need to update your skills every year or two.

How is a cloud engineer different from a DevOps engineer?

The roles overlap a lot. A cloud engineer focuses on building and running cloud infrastructure: networks, compute, storage, identity and cost. A DevOps engineer focuses more on the delivery pipeline, meaning the automated build, test and release processes that move code into production. In smaller companies one person often does both. Larger firms usually split the roles, and many cloud engineers move into DevOps or site reliability work later.

Do I need coding skills to become a cloud engineer?

Yes, but you do not need to be a software developer. Cloud engineers need enough programming to automate tasks, write scripts and read infrastructure code. Python, Bash and Terraform cover most entry-level needs. Strong Linux and networking knowledge matters just as much. Start with small automation projects, such as scripting a server setup, and build a public portfolio on GitHub to show your work to employers.
