Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Take a client's health history, goals and current activity level, and screen for conditions that need medical advice before exercise starts.
Run fitness assessments covering aerobic fitness, strength, flexibility and balance.
Design individual exercise programmes that set the type, intensity, frequency and duration of activity, starting from a goal such as 150 minutes of moderate activity a week.
Build strength, balance and stretching work suited to the client's age and ability, including seated or chair-based options for people with limited mobility.
Monitor progress and adjust the plan, for example by adding reps, weight or harder movements (progressive overload) when a client is ready.
Watch for signs of overtraining or poor recovery, and separate normal muscle soreness from warning signs.
Coordinate with doctors, physiotherapists and dietitians when clients have conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or lung disease, or osteoporosis.
