Career as a Gaffer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A gaffer is the chief lighting technician on a film or OTT set who turns the cinematographer's lighting plan into reality by rigging and controlling every light.

A gaffer is the chief lighting technician on a film, web series or ad shoot. Working under the cinematographer (Director of Photography), the gaffer plans, rigs and controls every light on set so that the look the director wants is captured on camera.

In India the role sits within the electrical department and usually grows out of hands-on work. Most gaffers start as lighting assistants or junior electricians, learn on real sets and move up over the years. Formal film courses help, but on-set experience and a reliable reputation count for more.

This page explains the day-to-day work, the realistic route in, typical courses and costs, how pay tends to grow, and the honest trade-offs: long and irregular hours, freelance uncertainty and physically demanding work.

What Does a Gaffer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Reads the script and the cinematographer's shot list to understand the lighting needed for each scene

  • Plans the lighting setup with the cinematographer, including light types, positions, colours and diffusion

  • Supervises the electrical team, including the best boy electric, electricians and lighting assistants

  • Rigs lights on stands, cranes, trusses and ceilings safely, and runs power cables and generators

  • Adjusts light levels and colour during shoots, often using dimmers, gels and diffusion

  • Checks electrical safety, generator load and power supply before each shoot begins

  • Works with the production team on the equipment list and rental budget, and tracks equipment returns

Where They Work

Gaffers work wherever moving images are shot. In India this includes Hindi film production houses in Mumbai, regional film industries in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Bengaluru, Kolkata and elsewhere, and streaming platform productions, which are usually made through production houses. Ad film and music video production companies also hire gaffers for individual projects.

Most gaffers are freelancers hired project by project. They usually find work through production houses and lighting equipment rental companies, and their reputation spreads by word of mouth. Some gaffers later join larger studios or work in-house on corporate and branded video teams.

How to Become a Gaffer in India?

After Class 12

Finish Class 12 in any stream. Physics helps with electrical concepts and with understanding light. Start building a portfolio through short films, college productions or photography.

Undergraduate

A three-year degree in film, mass communication or electrical engineering is useful but not compulsory. A one- to two-year diploma in film production or cinematography is a common route. Choose a course that includes practical shoots and access to real lighting equipment.

Hands-on Training

Join a film crew as a lighting assistant, junior electrician or 'spark'. Work on short films, ads and web series, and learn from experienced gaffers and best boys. Most of the skill comes from this stage.

Safety Training and Certification

Learn electrical and rigging safety, including working at height. Basic electrician certification and first-aid training are useful. Requirements vary by production house and state, so check what your target employers expect.

First Job

Start as a lighting assistant or best boy electric on small productions. Build a reel of your lighting work, keep a record of the shoots you have worked on, and grow your network among cinematographers and production managers.

Growing into Gaffer

After several years as a best boy and across a range of projects, you can take on the gaffer role on smaller productions and work towards larger films, series and ad campaigns.

Scope and Future of Gaffer in India

Demand for gaffers follows the volume of production. India's film industry across Hindi and many regional languages, along with streaming originals, web series, ad films and music videos, keeps a steady flow of shoots. Growth in OTT content has widened the number of productions that need experienced lighting crews, although many projects are short and project-based.

Growth areas include streaming series, high-end ad films, music videos, live concerts and events, and virtual production stages that use LED walls. Gaffers who understand LED lighting, colour science and energy-efficient rigs, and who can work safely at height, are better placed for these jobs. Equipment is also shifting towards LED fixtures, which changes the skills needed on set.

Some experienced gaffers find work abroad on international productions, particularly in Europe, the United States and the Gulf. Work permits, local crew rules and union or guild requirements vary by country and must be checked before applying. A strong reel and professional references are essential for overseas work.

Gaffer: Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gaffer in a film?

A gaffer is the head of the electrical or lighting department on a film or video set. They work closely with the cinematographer to turn the lighting plan into practice, deciding which lights to use, where to place them and how to control their brightness and colour. The gaffer leads a team of electricians and lighting assistants and is responsible for electrical safety on set.

Do I need a degree to become a gaffer in India?

No degree is compulsory. Most gaffers learn through hands-on work as lighting assistants or junior electricians on real sets. A diploma in film production or cinematography, or an electrical engineering degree, can help you get started and understand the technical side. Employers care most about your experience, your reel and your reliability on set.

How much does a gaffer earn in India?

Pay for gaffers in India varies widely because most work is freelance and project-based. Entry-level lighting assistants may earn around ₹2 - ₹4 lakh a year, while experienced gaffers on large films and series can earn considerably more. These figures are indicative only. Earnings depend on the size of the production, your experience, how often you get work and whether you are paid a day rate.

Is gaffer a good career for students who want to work in films?

It can be, if you enjoy technical work, teamwork and creative problem-solving. Gaffers are needed on films, web series, ads and music videos, so there is steady work for people who build a good reputation. The hours are long and often irregular, and income can be uneven in the early years. Students should try a short shoot or internship first to see whether the work suits them.

What is the difference between a gaffer and a cinematographer?

The cinematographer, also called the Director of Photography, decides the overall look of the film, including camera angles, lens choice and the mood of the lighting. The gaffer is responsible for making that lighting happen. The gaffer works under the cinematographer, planning and rigging lights, managing the electrical team and keeping the set safe. Some gaffers later develop camera skills and move into cinematography.

Which courses are best for learning film lighting?

Film production, cinematography and lighting diplomas are the most direct options and are often one to two years long. Degrees in film studies or mass communication give wider context, while electrical engineering helps with power and safety. Short workshops in set lighting are useful for building practical skills quickly. Whichever course you choose, look for one with practical shoots and access to real equipment.

Can a gaffer work on OTT web series?

Yes. Streaming platforms and their production partners make many web series, films and documentaries, and each needs a lighting team led by a gaffer. OTT shoots often run on tight schedules and high visual standards, so experience with multi-camera and low-light setups helps. Building a reel of series and short-form work can improve your chances of being hired.
