A military medical officer is a doctor commissioned into the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force to look after service personnel and their families, and to provide medical care in peacetime, field and combat settings. The job combines clinical medicine with military duties, training and postings across India and sometimes abroad.

Most people reach this role after an MBBS degree, through a commission in the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). Entry into MBBS is through NEET-UG, and the commission itself is won through a service selection process, so it is a competitive route that needs planning from Class 11.

  • Examine, diagnose and treat soldiers, sailors and air warriors, and in many cases their dependants, at military hospitals and medical units.

  • Run outpatient clinics and ward rounds, prescribe treatment and monitor patients' recovery.

  • Carry out medical boards and fitness assessments for recruitment, promotion, deployment and return to duty.

  • Provide first aid, emergency care and triage in field, border and disaster situations.

Where They Work

Military medical officers serve in the medical branches of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. Most work in Command Hospitals, Base Hospitals, Station Hospitals, Navy hospitals and Air Force medical centres, and in units that the services run across India.

Postings can include field formations, high-altitude and border areas, Navy ships and air bases. Civilian medical roles also exist outside the commissioned services. The Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) and government recruitment through the UPSC both advertise medical officer posts in 2026, but these are not commissioned military roles, so read each notice carefully before applying.

Undergraduate

Complete the MBBS degree, which takes 5.5 years including one year of compulsory rotating internship. Register with the National Medical Commission or the state medical council so that you can practise legally.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

A postgraduate degree (MD or MS) or a diploma in a specialty is optional for entry but helps for specialist posts such as anaesthesia, surgery or radiology. Some services value specialist training for senior postings.

Scope and Future of Military Medical Officer in India

Demand for medical officers is recurring. In 2026, the ECHS Ambala recruitment notice advertised 100 medical officer and other posts, and the UPSC announced 40 civilian medical officer posts. Military vacancies change from year to year, so check the official site of the service before each application.

Demand is likely to stay steady in trauma and emergency care, disaster response, public health and aviation medicine. The Indian Army's AFMS also runs nursing education under its own colleges, with a BSc (Nursing) course advertised for 2026, which shows the services' continued investment in health training.

Doctors with an MBBS and Indian medical registration can work abroad, but most countries require a local licence examination, and military service does not transfer automatically. Many former military doctors move into civilian government hospitals, private hospitals or ECHS polyclinics, where their clinical and emergency experience is valued.

Military Medical Officer: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I become a military medical officer after completing MBBS?

Yes. MBBS graduates can apply for a commission as a medical officer in the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force when a recruitment notice is open. You need a completed MBBS degree, medical registration and fitness that meets service standards. Selection typically includes an interview and a medical examination, so start preparing early and check the current notice on the official website of the service you want to join.

Is NEET-UG needed to become a military doctor?

Yes, for the usual route. NEET-UG is the national medical entrance exam for MBBS, and most military medical officers qualify through an MBBS degree. Armed Forces Medical College in Pune trains candidates specifically for the services, while doctors from civilian medical colleges can also apply for commissions. Confirm the current year's NEET-UG rules on the official NTA website before planning your timeline.

What is the difference between Short Service Commission and Permanent Commission?

A Short Service Commission is a fixed-term officer appointment, which can be extended, after which the officer leaves service. A Permanent Commission lets an officer serve until retirement age, with career progression and retirement benefits linked to length of service. Medical officers may be offered either type depending on the notice and the service. Read the terms in each notice carefully, because they can change from year to year.

What is the salary of a military medical officer?

Pay depends on rank, length of service and allowances, such as those linked to postings, hardship areas and family. Officers are paid as per the official pay scale for their rank, so starting pay is not one fixed figure. Check the current pay scale on the official website of the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force before relying on any amount, and compare it with government hospital pay for context.

Can women become military medical officers in India?

Yes. Women doctors are eligible to apply for medical officer roles in the armed forces. Eligibility conditions, age limits and fitness standards are set in each recruitment notice, so read them carefully before applying. Once commissioned, women officers serve under the same rank structure and service rules as their male colleagues.

How long is the training after selection?

Newly commissioned medical officers attend basic officer training at their service's training institution before their first posting. Each service sets the length of this training, and it is usually described in the joining instructions, so confirm it in the notice or with the service. During training you learn military law, drill, field first aid and the basics of service life.

Can I work in a civilian hospital after leaving the armed forces?

Yes. Many former medical officers join civilian government hospitals, private hospitals or ECHS polyclinics, where their clinical and emergency experience is valued. You need to keep your medical registration current with the National Medical Commission or the state medical council. Check post-service rules, pension terms and any notice periods with your service before making a decision.
