Career as a Naval Officer in India: Entry Routes, Salary and Training

At a glance

A naval officer leads and operates ships, submarines and naval aviation for the Indian Navy; most enter through the NDA, a B.Tech cadet entry or SSC after Class 12 or graduation.

A naval officer is a commissioned officer of the Indian Navy who leads sailors and commands or operates warships, submarines, naval aircraft and shore establishments. Officers take charge at sea, plan operations and manage the people and equipment that keep the fleet ready.

Most people enter in one of three ways: the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy (NDA & NA) examination after Class 12, the B.Tech Cadet Entry route after Class 12 with Science, or Short Service Commission entry through a graduate-level Indian Navy notification. Every route includes a Services Selection Board (SSB) interview, a medical examination and training at the Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala, Kerala.

Do not confuse this career with the Merchant Navy. Merchant Navy officers work on commercial cargo and passenger ships, while naval officers serve in the armed forces. Entry dates, age limits and vacancies change with each notification, so always check the official notice before you apply.

  • Command or navigate a ship, submarine or naval aviation unit on operations, patrols and exercises.

  • Plan and supervise watch-keeping, navigation, weapon handling and damage control.

  • Lead, train and assess sailors and junior officers, and look after their welfare and discipline.

Where They Work

Naval officers work mainly in the Indian Navy, on warships, submarines and naval aircraft, and at shore establishments in the country's naval commands. Major operating bases include the Western Naval Command in Mumbai, the Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam, the Southern Naval Command in Kochi and the Andaman and Nicobar Command in Port Blair.

Officers also serve at naval headquarters in New Delhi, at training establishments such as the Indian Naval Academy, and in naval dockyards and research units. Postings change regularly, and long periods away from home, including months at sea, are a normal part of the career.

How to Become a Naval Officer in India?

After Class 10

Choose the Science stream with Physics and Mathematics in Class 11 and 12. These subjects are needed for the NDA and B.Tech cadet entry routes, and building fitness and English skills now helps with the SSB interview later.

After Class 12

Apply for the UPSC NDA and Naval Academy (NDA & NA) examination, or for the B.Tech Cadet Entry route when a notification is open. Qualifying candidates then clear the SSB interview and the medical examination.

Undergraduate

NDA cadets complete about three years at the National Defence Academy in Pune and then train at the Indian Naval Academy. B.Tech cadets study for a degree in an engineering discipline while training at the Indian Naval Academy.

Graduation Route

Graduates can apply for Short Service Commission posts through Indian Navy notifications or for the UPSC Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination. Selection follows the notification, usually including the SSB interview and medical tests.

Naval Training

Commissioned entrants train at the Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala, Kerala, covering seamanship, navigation, leadership, weapons and naval law, before joining the fleet.

First Job

Newly commissioned officers join as Sub Lieutenants and take on watch-keeping and division duties at sea or ashore, with further specialist training as their branch requires.

Check the current status of any notification, as it may have closed by the time you read this page.

Growth areas include the blue economy, port development, shipbuilding, maritime domain awareness and naval modernisation, including submarines and ship-based technology. Government initiatives that push domestic defence manufacturing and port-led development support steady long-term need for trained maritime officers.

Most naval officers serve in India, but career paths can include exchange postings and training with other navies under bilateral agreements. After a Short Service Commission or retirement, many officers move into shipping, port management, maritime security, coast guard or consulting roles.

Naval Officer: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I join the Indian Navy as an officer after Class 12?

Yes. Students who have completed Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics can apply through the UPSC NDA and Naval Academy (NDA & NA) examination or, when a notification is open, the B.Tech Cadet Entry route. Both need you to clear a written test, pass the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview and meet medical standards. Selected cadets then train at the Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala, Kerala. Check the current notice for age limits and dates.

What is the difference between the NDA and the B.Tech Cadet Entry route?

Both start after Class 12 with Science. The NDA is a course of about three years at the National Defence Academy in Pune, followed by naval training. The B.Tech Cadet Entry route combines an engineering degree with naval training at the Indian Naval Academy. Choose based on whether you prefer a general science degree or an engineering degree alongside your officer training.

Is a naval officer the same as a Merchant Navy officer?

No. A naval officer serves in the Indian Navy, which is part of the armed forces, and works on warships, submarines and naval bases under military command. A Merchant Navy officer works on commercial cargo and passenger ships run by shipping companies. Both work at sea, but entry tests, training, pay structure and career paths differ, so compare the two carefully before choosing.

Do I need a graduate degree to become a naval officer?

Not always. Class 12 students can enter through the NDA and cadet routes, while graduates can apply for Short Service Commission posts through Indian Navy notifications or the UPSC Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination. Engineering and specialist branches often ask for a degree in a particular subject, such as a B.E. or B.Tech. Requirements change with each notification, so read the eligibility section of the official notice carefully.

How much does a naval officer earn in India?

A naval officer's pay follows government pay scales, plus allowances for service at sea and in postings. Entry-level officers typically earn around ₹10 to ₹15 lakh a year including allowances, rising to roughly ₹25 lakh or more at Commander rank. These are approximate figures that vary with rank, allowances and pay revisions, so check the current pay tables before you decide.

Are women eligible to become naval officers in India?

Women are eligible for some naval officer entry routes, but eligibility, branches and training openings vary with each notification. Check the specific advertisement for gender-specific rules and for the branches open to women in your category. Medical and physical fitness standards apply to all candidates, and the SSB interview is part of selection for every route.

What physical and medical standards apply?

Naval officer candidates must meet the medical standards set in each notification, which cover eyesight, height, weight, hearing and general health. The SSB and training also include physical endurance tests. Candidates with significant eyesight limits or certain medical conditions may be rejected for some branches, so read the medical standards in the notice before you apply.
