Career as an MLOps Engineer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

An MLOps engineer builds the pipelines and infrastructure that deploy, monitor and retrain machine learning models in production; most start from a B.Tech in CSE or AI.

An MLOps engineer builds and runs the systems that move machine learning models from a data scientist's laptop into live products, and keeps them accurate and reliable over time. MLOps, short for machine learning operations, combines machine learning, software engineering and DevOps to manage the full model lifecycle, from training and deployment to monitoring.

A model that works well in a notebook often fails in production: versions get mixed up, new data arrives, retraining is forgotten and performance quietly drops. MLOps engineers put in the automation, version control and monitoring that prevent this, which is why they work between data science, software engineering and IT operations.

Most people enter this field from a computer science, IT or AI degree and then build DevOps, cloud and ML skills, often through a first job in software or data engineering. The role has a steep learning curve in infrastructure, but it suits students who enjoy coding and solving production problems.

What Does an MLOps Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain automated pipelines that load data, train, test and evaluate models, using tools such as Kubeflow Pipelines, Apache Airflow or Prefect.

  • Set up CI/CD so that model and code changes are tested and deployed with little manual work, using GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins or ArgoCD.

  • Package models as containers with Docker and run them on Kubernetes or cloud services such as AWS, GCP or Azure.

  • Version code, datasets and models with Git, DVC and MLflow so that any past result can be reproduced and audited.

  • Monitor live models for latency, throughput, errors and accuracy, and watch for data drift and concept drift using Prometheus, Grafana or the ELK Stack.

  • Trigger retraining when performance drops, and work with data scientists to move improved models into production safely.

  • Secure data, model artefacts and infrastructure through access control, encryption and regular audits of third-party dependencies.

Where They Work

In India, MLOps engineers work mainly in product and SaaS companies, large IT services and consulting firms, and the AI or data teams of banks, fintech companies, e-commerce platforms and healthcare businesses. Most roles are concentrated in tech hubs such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and the Delhi NCR region, and many sit in global capability centres that run work for overseas companies.

AI start-ups often hire MLOps engineers early, sometimes as one of their first technical hires, and may expect wider skills across cloud and software. Larger organisations build internal ML platform teams that serve many data science groups. Some employers also offer remote or hybrid roles.

How to Become a MLOps Engineer in India?

After Class 12

Take the Science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Maths, which most B.Tech CSE and AI programmes require. Start learning Python and basic programming now, and read about how machine learning models are used in apps and websites.

Undergraduate

Complete a B.Tech or B.E. in CSE, IT or AI & ML, or a BCA or B.Sc in Computer Science if you prefer a shorter route. Learn Python, Linux, Git, databases and basic statistics, and finish at least one machine learning project from data to deployment.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Optional: an M.Tech, MCA or M.Sc in Data Science or AI helps for research-heavy or senior platform roles. Use this stage to build DevOps and cloud skills, including Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines and one cloud platform such as AWS, GCP or Azure.

Licence / Certification

Cloud provider certifications in machine learning or DevOps can strengthen your CV, but they supplement hands-on projects rather than replace them. Choose one cloud platform first and go deep instead of collecting many certificates.

First Job

Most people start as a junior ML engineer, DevOps engineer, data engineer or software engineer, then move into MLOps as they take on deployment and monitoring work. Publish your projects on GitHub and show a working pipeline in your portfolio.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 Science (PCM) is the standard route to a B.Tech in CSE, IT or AI & ML, and Maths is essential.

  • Students from Commerce or Humanities can enter through a BCA, a B.Sc in Computer Science or Data Science, or an MCA after a graduate degree that includes Maths or Statistics.

  • Typical minimum marks: most engineering colleges ask for around 50% to 75% aggregate in Class 12 PCM, depending on the institution and entrance exam. Check each college's rules.

  • Strong programming and maths skills matter more than the stream alone, so build them through school projects, online courses and coding competitions.

Scope and Future of MLOps Engineer in India

Demand for MLOps skills follows demand for AI in production. Indian news coverage through 2026 has highlighted AI and machine learning engineering as among the fastest-growing tech careers, and companies moving models from pilots into products need engineers who can keep those models running. Separate hiring figures for MLOps are harder to find than for broader AI roles, so treat the trend as strong but not precisely measured.

Growth is strongest where models run at scale: banking and fintech (fraud and credit risk models), e-commerce recommendations and search, healthcare analytics, and IT services firms that deliver AI projects for clients. Newer work on agentic AI, where systems take multi-step actions, depends on the same deployment, monitoring and safety practices, so MLOps skills carry over. Public-sector digital projects also need reliable AI systems, although most MLOps roles are in private companies.

Abroad, the same skills are in demand in major technology markets, and experienced engineers can find remote roles with overseas employers. Visa rules, licensing and language requirements vary, so check them early. Over the next decade the role is likely to shift towards platform building, governance and cost control as organisations run many models at once.

MLOps Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What does an MLOps engineer do?

An MLOps engineer builds the pipelines and infrastructure that take machine learning models from training into live use. Their work includes automating training and testing, deploying models as services, tracking versions, monitoring accuracy and speed in production, and retraining models when data changes. They work closely with data scientists and software or IT teams.

Is MLOps a good career in India?

It can be a strong choice for students who enjoy coding and solving production problems. Demand for AI and machine learning engineering is widely reported as strong in 2026, but hard numbers for MLOps alone are scarcer. The learning curve is steep in cloud, containers and automation, so test your interest with a deployed project before committing.

What is the difference between MLOps and DevOps?

DevOps automates the building, testing and deployment of software. MLOps applies the same ideas to machine learning, adding data, models and experiments to the mix. MLOps tracks data and model versions as well as code, monitors for data drift and concept drift, and retrains models as they age. Both use CI/CD tools and Kubernetes, so DevOps engineers can move into MLOps by adding ML knowledge.

Which degree should I study to become an MLOps engineer?

A B.Tech or B.E. in Computer Science, Information Technology or AI and Machine Learning is the most direct route in India. A BCA or B.Sc in Computer Science is a workable alternative, followed by an MCA or M.Sc in Data Science. Whatever you study, add Python, Linux, Git, Docker and cloud skills, and finish at least one machine learning project that you deploy and monitor yourself.

How much does an MLOps engineer earn in India?

Entry-level MLOps engineers typically earn around ₹6 to ₹10 lakh a year, mid-level engineers roughly ₹12 to ₹25 lakh, and senior platform leads can earn more. These are indicative ranges, not official figures. Pay depends on the city, employer type, company size, cloud and Kubernetes skills and your record of production work. Check current salary surveys before negotiating.

Do I need to be a data scientist to become an MLOps engineer?

No. You need a working understanding of machine learning, such as how models are trained, evaluated and retrained, but you do not need to design new algorithms. MLOps engineers spend more time on software, automation, cloud infrastructure and monitoring. Many come from software engineering or DevOps backgrounds and learn enough ML to work effectively with data scientists.

Which tools should a beginner learn first for MLOps?

Start with Python, Git and Linux, then learn Docker for packaging models. Next, add MLflow for experiment and model tracking, and a CI/CD tool such as GitHub Actions. Once you are comfortable, move to Kubernetes and one cloud platform, whether AWS, GCP or Azure. Avoid learning every tool at once; build one small pipeline end to end and add tools as your project needs them.

Can I become an MLOps engineer from a non-IT background?

It is harder but possible. People from maths, statistics, electronics or mechanical backgrounds can switch if they build strong programming skills and complete several deployed projects. A structured course, a master's degree or a first job in software, DevOps or data engineering can help. Be realistic about the time needed, which is usually a year or more of focused study and practice.
