Career as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in India: Role, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

An occupational therapy assistant helps people relearn and manage daily-life skills such as dressing, eating, writing and working, under the guidance of an occupational therapist.

An occupational therapy assistant works with people who have injuries, illnesses, disabilities or developmental conditions to rebuild the everyday skills they need at home, at school, at work and in the community. The assistant carries out therapy activities planned by an occupational therapist and records how each patient is progressing.

Many students choose this path because it is practical and hands-on, and they want a rehabilitation career without the length of a full medical degree. The title is not used the same way in every hospital or institute, so confirm which qualification a specific employer asks for, and check course durations before you enrol.

This page covers the day-to-day work, courses and eligibility, skills needed, pay and demand, and answers to common questions. Where we could not confirm a figure from reliable sources, we say so rather than guess.

Other common workplaces are rehabilitation centres, special schools and inclusive education centres, early intervention and child development centres, and mental health services.

Some work in geriatric and elder-care facilities, community rehabilitation projects run by NGOs, and disability service organisations. Placements and job titles vary by setting, so read job descriptions carefully before you apply.

How to Become an Occupational Therapy Assistant in India?

After Class 10

Choose the Science stream at Class 11 if you want a healthcare route, and build a strong base in biology, physics and chemistry. Biology matters most for rehabilitation and allied health courses.

After Class 12

Complete Class 12 in Science, usually with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Check the admission criteria for 2026-27 now. A Shiksha report dated 5 March 2026 says NEET UG will be mandatory for Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy admissions from 2027-28.

Undergraduate

Apply to a recognised Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOT) programme, which typically runs around 4.5 years including internship (confirm for each college). Clinical placements in hospitals form a large part of training. If you want a shorter route, look at diploma courses in rehabilitation or allied health, and check that the qualification is recognised for the job you want.

Licence / Certification

Check whether your course is recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India, the body to check for rehabilitation training, and whether any registration is needed for the role you target.

Specialisation (Optional)

Short certificate courses in areas such as paediatric therapy, hand therapy or sensory integration can help you find work in a specific setting. Durations vary by provider.

First Job

Look for entry-level posts in hospitals, rehabilitation centres and special schools. Clinical placements and internships help you build the practical skills employers ask for.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • A Science stream at Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) is the usual requirement for BOT and most allied health programmes. Confirm this for each course.

  • Biology is especially important for occupational therapy programmes and for any entrance test that follows.

  • Some diploma or certificate courses may accept other Class 12 streams. Check the course prospectus.

Minimum Qualification

  • A Class 12 pass from a recognised board. Many colleges set a minimum aggregate of around 50%, though this varies by institution and category.

  • A NEET UG score is expected to be required for occupational therapy admissions from 2027-28, according to a March 2026 report. The 2026-27 criteria may differ.

  • Some courses may also ask for a medical fitness certificate or an interview. Check the admission notice.

Scope and Future of Occupational Therapy Assistant in India

Demand for rehabilitation services is likely to keep growing as more children and adults are diagnosed with developmental, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, and as the older population grows. A Careers360 article from December 2025 lists healthcare professions expected to see strong demand by 2030. It does not confirm, from the headline alone, that occupational therapy is among them, so treat this as a general trend rather than a specific forecast.

Growth is strongest in hospitals with neuro and orthopaedic rehabilitation, paediatric and early intervention centres, elder care and mental health services. Recruitment for paramedical and health posts by central and state bodies appears regularly in news reports from 2025 and 2026. Whether specific occupational therapy posts are included needs to be checked in each official notice. Experience in children's services, neuro rehabilitation or elder care can help you stand out.

Overseas options exist but depend on the specific occupation and qualification. The UK's Health and Care Visa route for skilled health workers is one example, and an NHS Employers page on this route was published in April 2026. Check whether an occupational therapy assistant role qualifies before planning a move, and start any registration and English language checks early.

Occupational Therapy Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions

What does an occupational therapy assistant do?

An occupational therapy assistant carries out therapy activities planned by an occupational therapist. They help patients practise daily tasks such as dressing, eating and writing, set up assistive equipment, record progress and advise families on safe routines. The work is practical and involves physical handling of patients, so it suits people who enjoy hands-on work with people.

Can I become an occupational therapy assistant after Class 12 without NEET?

It depends on the course and the admission year. A Shiksha report dated 5 March 2026 says NEET UG will be mandatory for Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy admissions from 2027-28, and the 2026-27 criteria may still differ. Check the official admission notice of each college or state authority before you plan your entrance preparation, and confirm that a course is recognised for the jobs you want.

Is an occupational therapy assistant course shorter than a medical degree?

Some routes are shorter, but there is no single answer. A full Bachelor of Occupational Therapy typically runs around 4.5 years including internship, which is shorter than MBBS but still a full degree. Diploma or certificate options may be shorter, but check their recognition and the jobs they lead to before you enrol.

What is the difference between an occupational therapist and an occupational therapy assistant?

In many countries, an occupational therapy assistant works under a qualified occupational therapist and has a shorter qualification. In India the titles are not used the same way everywhere, so the scope of work can differ between employers. Ask a prospective employer what qualification they require, and read our Occupational Therapist career page for the full professional route.

What salary can an occupational therapy assistant earn in India?

Pay depends on your qualification, the employer (government or private), the city and your experience. Use recent job postings and reputable salary surveys to compare offers, because pay for this role changes and varies a lot between settings. Compare each offer with the training, duties and career growth it includes.

Do I need to be good at science to become an occupational therapy assistant?

Yes, a good grasp of biology and basic physics and chemistry helps, because training covers anatomy, movement, and how the body and mind respond to illness or injury. You do not need to be a top scorer, but you should be comfortable with biology and willing to learn a lot of practical detail. Communication and patience matter just as much in everyday work.

Is there demand for occupational therapy assistants in India?

Demand is likely to grow with the need for rehabilitation after stroke, injury, surgery and developmental conditions, and with more care for older adults. It is hard to confirm the number of openings for this specific title, so check local hospital and rehabilitation centre job listings. Experience in paediatric, neuro or elder care can improve your chances.
