A packaging automation engineer designs, builds and maintains the automated machines that fill, seal, label, wrap and pack products on factory lines. The work sits where mechanical design, electrical control and software meet, so the job involves PLCs, robots, sensors, drives and conveyors.
India's packaging sector is active with new equipment. Recent coverage from What Packaging, including items on Drinktec India and PackMach Asia, features label applicators, AI line monitors and new flexo presses, all of which need engineers who can install, programme and keep them running. Packaging is also a large market: the global food packaging market was estimated at USD 303.26 billion in 2019.
This is a specialised job rather than a standard degree title. Most people reach it through a B.Tech in mechatronics, mechanical, electrical or electronics engineering, then build automation skills through projects, PLC training and on-the-job commissioning. Some institutes also offer packaging technology courses, which can help you enter packaging plants sooner.
