Career as a Mechatronics Engineer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A mechatronics engineer designs smart machines that mix mechanics, electronics and software, like robots and factory automation. Most enter via a 4-year B.E./B.Tech after Class 12.

A mechatronics engineer designs, builds and controls smart machines by combining mechanical parts, electronics and software, such as robots, automated factory lines and smart vehicle systems. The field sits where mechanics, electronics and computing meet, so these engineers build systems that sense, decide and act.

In India most students enter through a four-year B.E. or B.Tech in Mechatronics after Class 12, with full-course fees typically between ₹1 lakh and ₹3 lakh. Diplomas, PG diplomas and short certificates offer shorter routes, and graduates usually start at around ₹3 to ₹4 lakh a year.

The hard part is that the course covers three engineering fields at once, so you need comfort with maths and physics, plus patience to learn programming and control theory. Students who enjoy building machines, testing them and fixing what breaks usually find the work rewarding.

Mechatronics Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between mechatronics and mechanical engineering?

Mechanical engineering centres on machine design, thermal systems and manufacturing, while mechatronics adds electronics, sensors, control systems and software to mechanical parts. A mechatronics graduate typically builds machines that sense, decide and act. If you enjoy designing parts but also want to program and automate them, mechatronics may suit you. Students who prefer one core discipline may choose mechanical engineering instead.

Which entrance exam should I take for mechatronics after Class 12?

There is no single exam for mechatronics. Colleges fill seats through national exams such as JEE Main, state tests such as MHT CET and KCET, and institutional tests such as VITEEE and SRMJEEE, depending on the college and state. Check each college's admission brochure to confirm that mechatronics is on the seat list and which test it accepts.

What salary can a mechatronics engineer expect in India?

Collegedunia cites an average of ₹3 to ₹7 lakh a year for mechatronics roles in India, with B.Tech graduates typically starting around ₹3 to ₹4 lakh a year. Postgraduates average about ₹4 to ₹8 lakh, and doctoral holders about ₹10 to ₹15 lakh. Pay depends on the employer, city and skills such as PLC or MATLAB. Treat these as indicative figures, since salaries change each year.

Can I study mechatronics after a diploma?

Yes, in some cases. Collegedunia notes that a diploma in mechatronics is available after Class 12, and in some cases after Class 10. A PG diploma needs a graduation degree in a related branch such as mechanical, electronics or electrical engineering. Whether a diploma holder can move directly into a B.Tech through lateral entry is not confirmed in our research, so check with the college first.

Do I need to be good at coding to become a mechatronics engineer?

Yes, coding is a core part of the job. Common tools include Python, C programming, Arduino and MATLAB with Simulink, which are used to write control logic, simulate designs and test machines. You do not need to be a software specialist at the start, but you should be comfortable writing and debugging simple programs. Small projects, such as a sensor-based robot, are a good way to practise.

Is mechatronics the same as robotics?

No. Robotics is one important area within mechatronics. Careers360 describes mechatronics as integrating electrical and mechanical systems and covering robotics, electronics and computers. Robotics engineers focus mainly on robots, while mechatronics engineers work across many kinds of machines, automation and control systems. Many mechatronics graduates do robotics work, so the two fields overlap a great deal in jobs.

Can I learn mechatronics online for free?

Yes, you can start for free. Our research lists NPTEL's Control Engineering course (12 weeks, free) and edX's Mechatronics Revolution course (16 weeks, free), while Coursera and Udemy offer both paid and free options. Online courses are useful for building specific skills and showing initiative, but they are not a substitute for a recognised engineering degree for most jobs. Pair them with projects you can show employers.

Can mechatronics graduates get government jobs?

Collegedunia names the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) among employers of mechatronics graduates. Getting in usually means clearing the official recruitment process for each organisation, which our research did not cover in detail. Check the official DRDO and ISRO career pages for current openings, eligibility and exam details before advising students on this route.
