Career as a Platform Engineer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A platform engineer builds and runs the internal tools, cloud infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines that let software developers ship code faster; most enter through a B.Tech or BCA.

A platform engineer builds and maintains the internal platform that software developers use every day. This includes self-service environments, CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes clusters and cloud infrastructure managed as code.

The work sits between software development and cloud operations. Platform engineers make shared tools reliable and easy to use, so product teams can release software quickly without solving the same infrastructure problems again and again.

In India, most people enter through a B.Tech in computer science or a BCA, then build practical skills in Linux, cloud platforms, containers and automation. Many start in DevOps or cloud roles before moving into platform teams.

What Does a Platform Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain internal developer platforms that give engineering teams self-service access to environments, pipelines and deployment tools.

  • Build and manage CI/CD pipelines so that code moves reliably from commit to production.

  • Run containerised applications on Kubernetes and manage cloud infrastructure on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, often using infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform.

  • Write automation scripts and internal tools in languages such as Python, Go or Bash.

  • Set up monitoring, logging and alerting so teams can see how their services are performing.

  • Work with security teams to build access control, secrets management and compliance checks into the platform.

  • Support developers with documentation, onboarding and troubleshooting, and take part in on-call rotations when production systems fail.

Where They Work

Platform engineers work in IT services companies, product software firms, banks and fintechs, e-commerce businesses and startups across India. Large IT services firms such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro and HCLTech run cloud and DevOps practices for global clients, while product companies usually hire for in-house platform teams.

Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Gurugram are a major employer, because global companies run their engineering platforms from these centres. Companies such as Apple have also expanded engineering hiring in India in 2026, according to TechGig.

How to Become a Platform Engineer in India?

After Class 10

Build a base in mathematics and computers. Start learning basic programming, preferably Python, through free online courses, and try using the Linux command line.

After Class 12

Choose Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) for B.Tech in computer science or IT. Many colleges offer BCA to students from other streams that include Mathematics, so check each college's rules.

Undergraduate

Complete a B.Tech in computer science or IT (including cloud and DevOps specialisations where offered), or a BCA. Build projects that use Git, Docker, a cloud free tier and automated deployments, and keep them on GitHub.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

An MCA, M.Tech or an overseas master's in computer science can help for senior or research-heavy roles. For most entry-level jobs, practical cloud and Kubernetes skills matter more than a second degree.

Licence / Certification

Earn one cloud certification, such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate, and one container certification, such as the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA). These show employers that you can work with real platform tools.

First Job

Start as a junior DevOps, cloud or software engineer, or join an infrastructure team. After a few years of pipeline, cloud and reliability work, move into a platform engineer role.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) is the usual route to B.Tech in computer science or IT.

  • Students from Commerce or Arts with Mathematics can often join BCA programmes, though rules differ by college.

  • Typical minimum marks: many colleges ask for around 50% aggregate in Class 12, but this varies by institution and should be checked in the admission brochure.

Minimum Qualification

  • A bachelor's degree, usually B.Tech/BE in computer science or IT, or a BCA, is the standard entry requirement.

  • Employers look for hands-on skills in Linux, cloud platforms, containers and automation, shown through projects, internships or certifications.

  • Some experienced software engineers or system administrators move into platform roles without a new degree, but a degree is the common entry route for freshers.

Scope and Future of Platform Engineer in India

Demand for platform engineers is closely tied to demand for cloud and DevOps skills. A TeamLease Digital estimate reported in September 2026 put India's talent gap in GenAI and cloud at 53 to 60 per cent. As more companies move workloads to the cloud and run AI systems, they need engineers who can build reliable, self-service platforms for their developers.

Growth is strongest in banking and fintech, e-commerce, IT services, and GCCs that run global engineering work from India. Salary increases are also expected to continue: an Aon survey projects average salary increases in India rising from 8.9 per cent in 2025 to 9.1 per cent in 2026, which reflects steady pay pressure for in-demand technology skills.

Platform engineering is also a route to overseas work. Engineers with strong cloud, Kubernetes and automation skills are sought by employers in the US, UK, Canada, Germany and Australia, and remote roles with global firms are common. The field changes quickly, so engineers who keep learning, document their work well and understand developer needs tend to progress furthest.

Platform Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a platform engineer do?

A platform engineer builds and maintains the internal platform that software developers use every day. This includes self-service environments, CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes clusters and cloud infrastructure managed as code. The goal is to let product teams ship software quickly and safely without each team solving the same infrastructure problems.

Is a platform engineer the same as a DevOps engineer?

The two roles overlap. DevOps engineers often focus on automating delivery pipelines and supporting specific product teams, while platform engineers design shared, self-service tools for the whole engineering organisation and treat developers as their customers. Many people start as DevOps or cloud engineers and move into platform roles after a few years of experience.

Can I become a platform engineer after BCA?

Yes. A BCA is a common starting point, especially if you add strong practical skills in Linux, Git, cloud platforms and Kubernetes. Many employers look at projects and certifications as much as the degree name. An MCA or a cloud-focused postgraduate course can help later, and a first job as a cloud or DevOps engineer is a practical route into platform work.

Which programming language should a platform engineer learn first?

Start with Python, which is widely used for automation and scripting, and learn Bash for working on Linux. Go is also common in cloud-native tools, including many Kubernetes-related projects, so it is worth learning once you are comfortable with the basics. Focus on writing small scripts that automate a real task rather than memorising syntax.

What is the salary of a platform engineer in India?

Entry-level platform or DevOps roles typically pay around ₹6 to ₹12 lakh a year, while mid-level engineers with several years of experience often earn around ₹14 to ₹28 lakh. Senior and staff roles can go higher. Pay depends on city, company type such as product company, GCC, services firm or startup, and on your skills. Check current salary surveys before making decisions.

Do I need a master's degree to become a platform engineer?

No. Most platform engineers in India start with a bachelor's degree in computer science, IT or BCA. An MCA or M.Tech can help for senior or research-heavy roles, but hands-on experience with cloud, containers and automation usually matters more to employers. Certifications can help you show these skills earlier in your career.

Is platform engineering a good career for the future?

Demand looks strong. A TeamLease Digital estimate reported in September 2026 put India's talent gap in GenAI and cloud at 53 to 60 per cent. As more companies run cloud workloads and AI systems, they need engineers who can build reliable internal platforms. Like all technology careers, the field changes fast, so continuous learning is part of the job.

Which certifications help a platform engineer?

Cloud and container certifications are the most useful. Common choices include the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate and the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA). Pick one cloud platform and one container certification, then build a portfolio project, such as a small internal platform with automated deployments. Check current exam details on the official provider websites before you enrol.
