What Does a Supply Chain Consultant Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Map a client's end-to-end supply chain, from suppliers and plants to warehouses and customers, to find cost and service gaps.

  • Build data models in Excel or specialist tools to test options such as warehouse locations, transport routes and inventory levels.

  • Design and compare network scenarios, for example adding a regional distribution centre or changing the supplier mix.

  • Benchmark client performance on cost, lead time, fill rate and inventory days against industry peers.

  • Support procurement negotiations and sourcing decisions with spend analysis and supplier evaluation.

  • Prepare presentations and recommendations for senior client executives, and track how agreed changes are implemented.

  • Coordinate with client teams, data analysts and fellow consultants to meet project milestones.

Where They Work

Most supply chain consultants in India work for management consulting firms and the advisory arms of the Big Four accounting networks. Their clients include manufacturing, FMCG, retail, e-commerce, pharmaceutical and automotive companies. Specialist logistics consultancies and the strategy teams of large Indian conglomerates also hire for the role.

Some consultants later move in-house into supply chain or logistics strategy roles at manufacturers, retailers and logistics companies. There they own the network and procurement decisions they once advised on.

Scope and Future of Supply Chain Consultant in India

Demand for supply chain expertise follows how companies manage cost, resilience and speed. Manufacturers, FMCG firms, e-commerce players and pharmaceutical companies regularly bring in outside advisers to redesign networks and sourcing. Consulting hiring also tracks the wider market. EY reported in February 2026 that Indian companies were projecting a 9.1% pay hike for 2026.

Government policy supports logistics and manufacturing growth. Initiatives such as the National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti aim to reduce logistics costs and improve multimodal connectivity, which creates project work for advisers. Headline MBA placement figures are also high: India Today reported IIM Mumbai's 2026 highest package at ₹71.4 lakh and average at ₹34.5 lakh. These are batch-wide figures across all specialisations, not consultant pay.

Global consulting firms and multinational companies hire supply chain consultants in many countries, and Global Capability Centres in India increasingly run supply chain analytics for overseas parent companies. Many consultants also move into industry roles. Growth depends on the wider economy, so treat these trends as direction rather than guarantee.

Supply Chain Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions

Is an MBA compulsory to become a supply chain consultant?

No, but an MBA or PGDM is the most common route into consulting firms. Engineering graduates with two or three years of operations, procurement or logistics experience can also enter, often through lateral hiring. Consulting firms look for structured problem-solving, numerical ability and client communication, so build those through projects and internships whichever route you take.

Can a B.Tech graduate become a supply chain consultant?

Yes. B.Tech graduates in industrial, mechanical or production engineering suit supply chain work well because they understand plants, processes and data. Many add an MBA or PGDM with an operations specialisation later. Early work in a manufacturer's planning, procurement or logistics team builds the experience consulting firms ask for, and a certification such as CSCP can help your profile.

Which MBA specialisation is best for supply chain consulting?

Operations management, operations and supply chain, and logistics are the specialisations most relevant to this career. Business analytics is also useful because network design and inventory work rely heavily on data. Check the curriculum for courses on network optimisation, procurement and supply chain analytics, and ask about placement records for consulting roles before you choose a college.

How much does a supply chain consultant earn in India?

Pay depends on your degree, employer and experience. As a rough guide, an MBA entry-level hire may start around ₹8 - ₹15 Lakh a year, rising sharply at senior levels. Boutique firms and the largest consulting networks can pay very differently, so compare current offers and recent salary surveys before deciding.

Is supply chain consulting a good career for freshers?

It can be, if you are comfortable with long hours, travel and fast-paced projects. Freshers usually join as Associates or Business Analysts, doing data work and analysis before leading client discussions. The learning is fast and broad, but the workload is heavy, so think about how it fits your lifestyle and long-term goals, such as moving into industry later.

Which certifications help a supply chain consultant?

Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) and Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) are widely recognised supply chain certifications that show structured knowledge of planning and operations. A Lean Six Sigma Green Belt adds process-improvement skills that consulting clients value. Certifications complement an MBA or engineering degree rather than replace it, and they cost money, so choose ones tied to the work you want.

Is there scope for supply chain consultants abroad?

Yes. Global consulting firms and multinational companies hire supply chain consultants in many countries, and Indian graduates from well-known MBA programmes often start with international firms. Language skills, a work visa and local experience can matter, so check the immigration rules of each country and build relevant project experience first.
