Career as a Lidar Engineer in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

A lidar engineer designs, tests and integrates laser-ranging sensors and the software that turns their 3D point clouds into maps and obstacle detection for vehicles and surveys.

A lidar engineer designs, builds and tests lidar sensors, the devices that fire pulsed laser light and measure how long it takes to bounce back, so they can build precise 3D maps of the world around them. The role sits where optics, electronics, embedded software and data processing meet.

Lidar is used well beyond cars. Survey teams use airborne lidar for terrain and coastline maps, scientists use it for atmospheric and forest studies, and emergency teams use it for flood and storm surge modelling. Newer uses, such as drones, warehouse robots and driver-assistance systems, keep adding demand for engineers who can design and validate these sensors.

Getting into this field in India usually means a B.E. or B.Tech in Electronics, Electrical, Mechatronics or Instrumentation, followed by projects and internships in sensors or robotics. Be realistic: dedicated lidar jobs are fewer than general software jobs, so most engineers build a wider base in embedded systems, optics or computer vision and specialise on the job.

What Does a Lidar Engineer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Select lidar sensors by range, wavelength, field of view and scan method for a vehicle, drone or survey platform.

  • Design or review the optics, laser driver and receiver electronics, including photodetectors and timing circuits, with the sensor team.

  • Integrate the lidar with GPS, inertial measurement unit (IMU) and camera systems so that position and orientation data line up with the point cloud.

  • Calibrate sensors and check accuracy and range in lab tests and field trials.

  • Write or review software that filters point clouds, removes noise and detects objects such as vehicles, pedestrians and road edges.

  • Check that the laser stays within eye-safety limits and that any automatic shut-off systems work as designed.

  • Investigate faults such as misalignment or vibration damage, and document test results for the design and production teams.

Where They Work

Lidar engineers work mainly in automotive and mobility companies, including vehicle makers, Tier-1 auto component suppliers and autonomous driving and advanced driver-assistance (ADAS) teams. Many global automotive and technology firms run engineering or research centres in India, and these employ sensor and perception engineers.

Other employers include drone and defence firms, geospatial and surveying companies, mapping and public agencies, robotics and industrial automation companies, and research institutes working on photonics and remote sensing. Some start-ups building sensor hardware also hire lidar engineers, where one role may cover design, testing and production.

Scope and Future of Lidar Engineer in India

Demand for lidar engineers is closely tied to self-driving and driver-assistance technology, electric vehicles, drones and robotics. These areas are growing, but dedicated lidar roles remain a small share of engineering jobs, so the field rewards engineers who combine lidar knowledge with embedded systems, computer vision or robotics skills.

Lidar is also growing in mapping and public planning. NOAA's work shows the range of uses, including shoreline mapping, digital elevation models, flood and storm surge modelling, emergency response and coastal vulnerability analysis. News coverage in March 2026 also reported lidar being used in archaeology, including mapping features under the Amazon rainforest. Similar work can open doors for engineers in geospatial and government-linked projects in India.

Engineers with a few years of experience can also look abroad, where automotive, geospatial and robotics companies employ sensor specialists. Rules for work visas and permanent residence differ by country and change often, so check current requirements with official sources before you plan a move.

Lidar Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a lidar engineer do?

A lidar engineer designs, builds and tests lidar sensors, which fire pulsed laser light and measure how long it takes to bounce back, to build precise 3D maps of the surroundings. Day to day, the work covers choosing sensor specifications, designing optics and receiver electronics, calibrating units in labs and field trials, and writing software that processes point clouds. Many engineers focus either on hardware or on the perception software that uses the data.

Can I become a lidar engineer after Class 12 with PCM?

Yes. Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths opens the route to a B.E. or B.Tech in Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Mechatronics or Instrumentation, which are the most common starting points. Few colleges offer a dedicated lidar degree, so you will usually learn lidar through sensor, optics and signal processing subjects, then through projects and internships. Good scores in JEE Main or a state entrance test help you reach stronger colleges.

Which degree is best for a lidar engineer in India?

A B.E. or B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering is the most flexible choice, because it covers analog electronics, signal processing and embedded systems. Mechatronics suits students who like combining mechanics with electronics for vehicles and robots. A Physics degree followed by a postgraduate course in photonics suits those drawn to optics and laser design. For research roles, an M.Tech or M.Sc followed by GATE is a common route.

How much does a lidar engineer earn in India?

Entry-level lidar engineers typically earn around ₹4 to ₹7 lakh a year, depending on the employer, city and skills. With 3 to 6 years of experience, pay often moves to around ₹10 to ₹18 lakh, and senior specialists or managers can earn more, especially at automotive and autonomous driving companies. These figures are estimates, and actual pay varies with the company, the postgraduate degree you hold and whether you work in product or research roles.

Is lidar engineering a good career in India?

It can be a good career for students who enjoy physics, electronics and coding and are comfortable with a specialised niche. Demand is linked to self-driving and driver-assistance technology, drones, mapping and robotics, which are growing areas. However, the number of dedicated lidar roles is smaller than for general software jobs, so a broader base in embedded systems, computer vision or robotics makes you more employable.

What is the difference between lidar and radar?

Both measure distance by sending a signal and timing its return. Radar uses radio waves, while lidar uses pulsed laser light, usually in the infrared or visible range. Because light has a much shorter wavelength than radio waves, lidar can produce much finer 3D detail, which is why it is used to create precise point clouds for mapping and for seeing the road around a vehicle. Radar is often preferred where weather or distance matter more than fine detail.

Do lidar engineers need an M.Tech or PhD?

Not always. Many sensor testing, integration and software roles hire B.E. or B.Tech graduates, especially those with internships and projects. An M.Tech in photonics, robotics, remote sensing or autonomous systems helps for design and research roles, and a PhD is common for work on new laser, scanning or detector technology in research labs and institutes. Choose based on whether you want to build products or advance the technology itself.
