Where They Work

Naturopaths in India work in naturopathy hospitals and nature cure centres, wellness clinics, yoga and wellness retreats, and AYUSH facilities. Some work in corporate wellness programmes or with health-tech companies that offer diet and lifestyle coaching.

Many build their own practice, in person or online, after a few years of experience. Demand is strongest in big cities, but many naturopaths also serve smaller towns with fewer wellness options. A 2021 central government notice listed private day-care therapy centres for naturopathy under CGHS, with empanelment running to 30 March 2022, so check whether this has since been renewed.

How to Become a Naturopath in India?

After Class 10

Choose the Science stream in Classes 11 and 12, with Biology, because most BNYS colleges expect a science background. Build an interest in health, yoga and nutrition.

After Class 12

Apply through the route your state or institute uses. Karnataka's KCET has published BNYS cut-offs, and NIN Pune invites BNYS applications each year, so track application windows closely.

Undergraduate

Complete the BNYS degree, which covers anatomy, physiology, pathology, nutrition, naturopathy therapies, yoga and clinical training. The course typically includes a compulsory internship.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Optionally, take an MD in Naturopathy or Yoga and Naturopathy, or a specialist course in diet, yoga therapy or hydrotherapy. Tamil Nadu ran MD yoga and naturopathy admissions in 2026.

Licence / Certification

Check your state's rules on registration and practice before you treat clients. Rules vary, so confirm with your state AYUSH or health department.

First Job

Start in a clinic, hospital wellness unit or retreat and build a client base. Many practitioners later open their own clinic or consultation practice.

Scope and Future of Naturopath in India

Interest in preventive health, natural living and lifestyle-led care has grown, which supports demand for naturopaths. No official count of naturopathy jobs is confirmed here, so treat demand as growing rather than measured.

Growth is strongest in wellness retreats, corporate wellness, digital health coaching and integrative clinics that work alongside doctors. The Ministry of AYUSH promotes AYUSH systems, including naturopathy, and state governments regularly announce AYUSH admissions and recruitment, as the 2026 counselling and recruitment notices show. Check each notice's eligibility, because AYUSH posts do not always include naturopathy.

Opportunities abroad are more limited. Many countries regulate naturopathy differently, and a BNYS degree is not automatically recognised. Those who want to work overseas should check the destination country's licensing rules and consider further study or a locally recognised qualification.

Naturopath: Frequently Asked Questions

Is naturopathy a recognised career in India?

Yes. Naturopathy is taught as a degree course (BNYS) in India and sits within the AYUSH system of medicine, which the government promotes. Admissions are held each year through state tests and institute processes, and postgraduate MD programmes exist. The rules on who can practise and what they can offer vary by state, so check the licensing rules where you plan to work before you enrol.

What is the difference between BNYS and BAMS?

BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) is an Ayurveda degree that trains students in Ayurvedic medicines and treatments. BNYS focuses on natural therapies such as diet, hydrotherapy, mud therapy, massage and yoga, along with lifestyle guidance. Both are AYUSH courses taken after Class 12 science. If you want to work with Ayurvedic medicines, BAMS is the usual route; if you prefer diet, lifestyle and natural therapies, BNYS fits better.

Can I become a naturopath after Class 12 Commerce or Arts?

Usually not through the BNYS degree, which expects Class 12 with science and biology. Some diploma or certificate courses in yoga, nutrition or wellness may accept students from other streams, so check each course's rules. If you come from Commerce or Arts, a short certificate in diet or yoga therapy can be a practical start, but it may not carry the same recognition as a BNYS degree.

Do naturopaths need a licence to practise?

It depends on the state. Rules on registration and on the services naturopaths can offer are set at state level, and some states require registration before you treat clients. Before you start practising, check your state's AYUSH or health department and keep your degree certificates ready for verification. Clients should also be told when to see a doctor.

What is the salary of a naturopath in India?

Entry salaries are typically around ₹2 to ₹3 lakh a year, depending on the city, employer and training. Mid-level practitioners with several years of experience often earn more, and senior practitioners who run clinics or retreats can earn well above ₹6 lakh a year. Earnings from your own practice vary widely with clients, location and reputation. These figures are estimates.

Can naturopaths treat diseases like diabetes or heart problems?

Naturopaths can support lifestyle changes that help people manage conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and digestive problems, alongside medical care. They should not replace a doctor's diagnosis, prescribed medicines or treatment for serious or acute illness. A responsible naturopath refers patients to a qualified doctor when symptoms are serious and works with that doctor where possible.

Is there a postgraduate option in naturopathy?

Yes. MD programmes in naturopathy, and in yoga and naturopathy, are offered in some states. Tamil Nadu's AYUSH admissions for 2026 included MD yoga and naturopathy courses, with the application deadline extended to 10 September 2026. Check each university's brochure for eligibility, duration and entrance requirements, and watch for the next admission cycle.

Can I practise naturopathy abroad with a BNYS degree?

Not automatically. Naturopathy is regulated differently across countries, and a BNYS degree may not be recognised for practice abroad. Before planning a move, check the destination country's licensing and recognition rules, and consider whether a local qualification or further study is needed.
