Career as a Product Owner in India: Salary, Skills and How to Begin

At a glance

A product owner sets the priorities for a software development team, deciding which features get built first and why, and links customers, business teams and developers.

A product owner is the person who decides what a software development team builds next. They own the product backlog, turn customer and business needs into prioritised work items, and make sure each sprint delivers the most value. In India, the role sits mainly in IT services firms, software product companies, startups and global capability centres (GCCs).

Most product owners start as software engineers, business analysts, testers or graduates with strong analytical and communication skills, then train in Scrum or SAFe and move into the role. There is no single entrance exam for this job. The usual route is a bachelor's degree, practical experience in software teams and an Agile certification.

What Does a Product Owner Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Maintain the product backlog: add, refine and rank user stories so the team always knows what comes next.

  • Write clear user stories and acceptance criteria that developers and testers can act on.

  • Work with customers, business heads and users to understand what problem a feature must solve.

  • Set sprint goals with the Scrum team and join sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives.

  • Accept or reject completed work against the agreed criteria before it is released.

  • Track product metrics such as usage, conversion or delivery progress and use them to decide priorities.

  • Say no to requests that do not fit the product goal, and explain the trade-offs to stakeholders.

Where They Work

Most product owners in India work in IT services and consulting firms that run Agile projects for clients, and in software product companies that build their own SaaS, fintech, edtech or e-commerce platforms. Startups often combine the role with product management, while larger firms have dedicated product owners for each team.

Global capability centres (GCCs) of foreign banks, insurers and technology companies in cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and Gurugram are a large employer of product owners. Banks and insurers with in-house technology teams also hire for the role, especially for digital banking and insurance platforms.

How to Become a Product Owner in India?

After Class 12

Choose a degree that builds technical or analytical skills. Engineering (B.Tech in Computer Science or IT), BCA or B.Sc Computer Science are common routes, and a commerce or arts graduate can enter through an MBA or Agile training later.

Undergraduate

Complete a degree in computer science, IT, engineering or a related field. Build projects, join college tech clubs or do internships in software teams so you learn how development work is planned and delivered.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

An MBA or PGDM with a focus on product or technology management can help, particularly for product management roles. It is optional for many product owner jobs, where practical experience and certification often carry more weight.

Licence / Certification

Earn an Agile product ownership certification such as Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) or Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO). Some employers also value SAFe-based product owner training for large-scale Agile programmes.

First Job

Start as a business analyst, associate product owner, QA engineer or developer on an Agile team. Work closely with an experienced product owner, learn the backlog process and move into the full role once you can run it on your own.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Stream and Subject Requirements

  • Class 12 in any stream can lead to a graduate degree, but Science with Mathematics (PCM) is the usual route to B.Tech/BE in Computer Science or IT.

  • Commerce or arts students can take a BCA, BBA or a degree in economics or statistics, then move into Agile product roles or an MBA.

  • Maths and logical reasoning help in analysing data and prioritising work, and basic computer skills are expected from day one.

Minimum Qualification

  • A bachelor's degree in any discipline is the baseline for most product owner roles in India, although many employers prefer computer science, IT, engineering or management backgrounds.

  • Most B.Tech and BCA colleges set a minimum aggregate in Class 12 that varies by institute. Check each college's admission notice for current cut-offs.

  • Prior experience in software development, business analysis, QA or project coordination is often required for the role itself, and an Agile certification is valued by employers.

Scope and Future of Product Owner in India

Agile delivery is now the normal way that software is built in India, across IT services, software product firms, fintech, edtech, e-commerce and healthcare technology. Because every Agile team needs someone to set priorities, product owner roles appear wherever software is being built or upgraded, and the demand is closely tied to how much digital work companies are doing.

Global capability centres in India, which run technology work for overseas parent companies, are a major source of product roles. Many of them are scaling up their digital product teams, and product owners who understand both the business and the technology are in demand. Government-backed digital platforms and large public-sector software projects also use Agile teams, which adds to the range of employers.

Experienced product owners can move into product management, product leadership or consulting, and some work abroad in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe or Singapore, usually through global firms or intra-company transfers. Visa rules and local hiring norms differ by country, so check them before planning a move.

Product Owner: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a product owner do?

A product owner manages the product backlog for a software development team. They decide which features the team works on first, write or refine user stories, accept finished work and explain priorities to business leaders and customers. They work alongside the Scrum Master and developers, and they are responsible for the value the product delivers.

Is product owner a good career in India?

It can be a good career for people who like both technology and business. Demand comes from IT services firms, product companies, startups and global capability centres. Pay rises with experience, and the role is a common step into product management. Your progress depends on your communication skills, domain knowledge and ability to deliver results.

What is the difference between a product owner and a product manager?

A product owner focuses on one team's backlog and sprint-level priorities, while a product manager looks at the wider product strategy, market and roadmap. In many Indian companies the two roles overlap, and a product owner often moves into product management after a few years of experience.

Can a fresher become a product owner?

Freshers usually start in related roles such as associate product owner, business analyst or product analyst, rather than directly as product owners. Internships in software teams, a relevant degree and an Agile certification improve your chances. Employers typically expect a few years of hands-on experience before giving full ownership of a product backlog.

Do I need an MBA to become a product owner?

No, an MBA is not required for most product owner roles in India. Employers look for technical understanding, Agile knowledge and experience working with teams. An MBA or PGDM with a product or technology focus can help if you want to move into product management or leadership later, but it is optional.

Which certification is useful for a product owner?

Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) and Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO) are widely recognised Agile product ownership certifications. SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager training is useful if you work in large-scale Agile programmes. Check the current course fees and exam formats on the certifying body's official site before enrolling.

How much does a product owner earn in India?

Indicative pay bands are about ₹6 to ₹10 lakh a year at entry level, ₹12 to ₹25 lakh at mid level and ₹25 to ₹45 lakh or more at senior level. Actual pay depends on the company type, city, skills and experience, and product management roles often pay more. Check current salary surveys before negotiating.
