What Does a Production Designer Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Reads the script and meets the director to agree the film's look, mood and period.

  • Creates mood boards, colour palettes and concept sketches for sets, locations and props.

  • Plans and oversees the art department, including art directors, set decorators, props masters, carpenters and painters.

  • Scouts and approves locations, and decides whether to build a set or dress a real place.

  • Prepares and tracks the art department budget and schedule with the producer.

  • Supervises the build, dressing and removal of sets during the shoot, and coordinates with the VFX team on digital extensions.

Where They Work

Production designers work mainly on feature films, web series and television serials, and on advertisement films, music videos and brand films. Most major film hubs have work for them, including Mumbai (Hindi cinema, with studios in Goregaon's Film City), Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi and Pune, along with regional film industries in other states.

Employers include film production houses, OTT platforms, television production companies, advertising agencies and event or exhibition houses. Many production designers work freelance, taking on one project at a time, so building a network of directors and producers matters as much as formal training.

Scope and Future of Production Designer in India

Demand for production designers follows the volume of film, web series, television and advertising work. India has several large film industries, including Hindi cinema centred in Mumbai and regional industries in Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi and elsewhere, and the growth of streaming platforms has added steady work for series and documentaries. Official figures on job numbers for this role are not yet confirmed, so treat the outlook as qualitative.

Growth areas include OTT originals with period and fantasy worlds, regional films with strong local design traditions, music videos, brand films and live events staged as productions. Some state governments offer shooting incentives and film policies to attract productions to their locations, which can create work outside the big hubs. Check current state policies before planning a move.

Some Indian designers work on international productions, co-productions and shoots abroad. This usually needs a strong portfolio, experience on large projects, and an understanding of visa and union or guild rules in the country of work. Building a portfolio of short films, ads and student projects remains the most practical step towards both domestic and overseas work.

Production Designer: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a production designer do?

A production designer creates the overall look of a film, series or ad. They read the script, agree the visual style with the director and cinematographer, plan sets and locations, and lead the art department that builds and dresses them. They also manage the art budget and make sure the designs can be shot on schedule. The role sits above the art director and set decorator.

Can I become a production designer after Class 12?

Yes. Many people enter through a three- or four-year bachelor's programme in film, art direction, design or fine arts after Class 12. Some start as art department assistants after school and learn on set. Most design and film schools ask for a portfolio or an entrance test, so start building drawings, photographs and short projects early.

Do I need a degree to work as a production designer?

A degree is not always required for entry-level art department work, and experience on set counts for a lot. However, a degree or diploma in film, art direction or design makes it easier to get hired on larger projects and to move into senior roles. Your portfolio and work record usually matter as much as the qualification.

Which entrance exams lead into production design courses?

The FTII entrance examination is used for its film courses, and the NID Design Aptitude Test is used for NID design programmes. Many private film and design schools run their own entrance tests or interviews. Dates and eligibility change each year, so check the official notice of each institute before applying.

How much does a production designer earn in India?

We have not yet verified current salary figures for production designers in India, so this page does not quote an amount. Pay varies widely by project size, city, experience and whether you work on films, series or ads. Check recent salary surveys and speak to working professionals before making decisions.

What is the difference between a production designer and an art director?

A production designer sets the overall visual look of a project and leads all the departments that shape it. An art director works under the production designer, turning that plan into the actual sets, locations and build for a sequence or unit. On smaller projects one person may do both jobs, and titles can vary between studios.

Do I need a portfolio to get into this career?

Yes, a portfolio is one of the most important things for this career. Include concept sketches, mood boards, colour studies, set models or photos of sets you have dressed, and any student films or ads you worked on. Show how your choices support the story. Keep it updated and bring a physical or digital copy to every interview.
