Career as an Art Director in India: Salary, Courses and How to Begin

At a glance

An art director leads the visual look of ads, films, brands and digital content, turning a brief into images and style that a whole team then builds.

An art director decides how a finished piece looks and feels, including its visual style, colours, imagery and layout. In India the role appears in advertising agencies, film and OTT productions, brand teams and digital studios, and most people reach it after a design degree and several years as a designer.

Art directors work in advertising agencies, film and OTT production, in-house brand teams, digital studios and publishing. The title means slightly different things in each: in advertising it covers campaign and brand visuals, while in films it usually means production design, which covers sets, props and the overall look of the film.

The usual route runs through a design or mass communication degree, a portfolio of real work, and several years as a designer before you lead a team. This page covers the day-to-day work, the routes in, salary ranges, entrance exams and colleges, and marks estimates clearly.

Where They Work

In advertising, art directors work in creative agencies, usually as a pair with a copywriter, on campaigns for FMCG, fashion, automobile, banking, telecom and technology brands. Large brands also run in-house creative teams that hire art directors to own their visual identity, packaging and digital channels.

In entertainment, film art directors (production designers) work on feature films, web series and OTT originals, usually through production houses and studios. Art directors also work at digital studios, game studios, publishing houses and magazines, and as freelancers who take project-based work.

How to Become an Art Director in India?

After Class 10

Build drawing, colour and visual basics through art classes, a foundation course or regular sketching. This is not compulsory, but it helps with later portfolio and aptitude tests.

After Class 12

Choose a route: a design entrance such as NID DAT or UCEED for B.Des, a BFA, or a BA or BMM in Mass Communication. Students from any stream can apply to most design courses if they pass the entrance tests.

Undergraduate

Complete a B.Des, BFA or mass communication degree. Use internships at agencies, studios or film sets to build real work for your portfolio, and learn Adobe tools, Figma and basic video editing.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Optional but useful: an M.Des, an MFA, or a PG Diploma in Advertising and Public Relations, or a film-focused diploma for film art direction. Many people also grow through junior roles without a postgraduate degree.

First Job

Start as a junior designer, visualiser or associate art director in an agency, studio or production house. Expect several years of building a portfolio and leading small tasks before taking charge of a full campaign or film look.

Minimum Qualification

  • A bachelor's degree (B.Des, BFA, or BA/BMM) is expected for most agency and studio roles

Scope and Future of Art Director in India

Demand for art directors follows the advertising, brand and entertainment markets. Digital ads, brand content for online shopping, streaming originals and regional-language films and music all create work that needs strong visual leadership. Employers look for people who can work across print, screen and social formats rather than one medium alone.

Growth is strongest where brands and creators publish online every day and where OTT platforms commission original content. The role is also changing: art directors increasingly work with product designers, UX teams and AI-assisted production tools, so those who combine craft with a clear understanding of audiences and data have more options.

Public-sector campaigns, museums, heritage projects and cultural institutions also hire visual leads. Art directors with an international portfolio can look at work in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and the Gulf, but visa and work-permit rules change often, so check the official immigration site of the country before planning a move.

Art Director: Frequently Asked Questions

What does an art director do?

An art director decides the visual style of a project and makes sure every element supports it. In advertising, that means choosing the layout, typography, colours and imagery of campaigns, usually with a copywriter. In films, the film art director, often called the production designer, plans the sets, locations and props. Both roles lead a team of designers or craftspeople and present their ideas to clients or directors for approval.

Is art director a good career in India?

It can be, but the field is competitive and progress is often slow. Demand comes from advertising agencies, brands, film and OTT production and digital platforms, and the work is creative and visible. Most people spend several years as designers before taking the title, and pay varies widely between a small agency and a large brand. A strong portfolio, communication skills and the ability to handle deadlines matter most.

Can I become an art director after Class 12 in Arts or Commerce?

Yes, but you need a route into design. Students from any stream can apply to design entrance exams such as NID DAT or UCEED if they can build a portfolio and pass the aptitude tests. Arts and humanities students often take a BA or BMM in mass communication and then a PG diploma in advertising. Commerce students can also enter through MBA routes in brand management, then move into creative roles.

NID or UCEED: which is better for an art director?

Neither is better in general, because they lead to different courses. NID DAT leads to B.Des and M.Des at NID campuses, while UCEED leads to B.Des at IIT Bombay and other participating IITs. Compare the courses, fees, campus locations and the entrance stages of each before you choose, and check the official sites for current dates and rules.

What is the difference between an advertising art director and a film art director?

An advertising art director works on campaigns for brands, usually in an agency, and is judged by how well the visuals sell the idea across print, digital and TV. A film art director, often called the production designer, works on the look of a film, including sets, props and the colour palette, and works closely with the director and cinematographer. Their training and portfolios differ, so decide which path you want before choosing courses.

How much does an art director earn in India?

Pay varies by city, employer and experience. As a rough guide, an entry-level associate or junior art director may earn around ₹4 to ₹7 lakh a year, a mid-level art director around ₹10 to ₹20 lakh, and senior creative leaders ₹30 lakh or more at large agencies or studios. These are estimates rather than official figures, so check a current salary survey before quoting them to students.

Do I need a portfolio to become an art director?

Yes. A portfolio shows your visual thinking and is usually the main thing design employers look at. Build around 8 to 12 pieces that show range, such as a brand identity, a poster or ad layout, a short motion piece, and one project with a clear brief and results. Label clearly which parts you did yourself. Design courses also often ask for a portfolio or a creative test during admission.

Can I become an art director without a design degree?

Yes, though it usually takes longer. Many people enter as graphic designers, photographers, illustrators or copywriters without a design degree and grow into art direction through strong work and experience. A short course, a diploma or a PG diploma in advertising can speed this up. Employers mostly judge your portfolio and your ability to lead a team rather than the name of your degree.
