At a glance

A fine artist creates original paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints to sell, exhibit or commission; most train through a BFA or similar fine arts degree after Class 12.

A fine artist creates original work such as paintings, drawings, sculpture and prints, and earns from selling it, exhibiting it, taking commissions or teaching. It is a practice-led career, where the body of work, the portfolio and the network built over years matter as much as any single qualification.

Most students who enter the field start with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or a similar fine arts degree after Class 12, usually through the college's own aptitude and portfolio test. Income is irregular in the early years, so many artists combine their practice with teaching, design or freelance art work.

This page covers what the work involves, the courses and colleges to look at, how earnings and demand work in India, and the steps to start building a practice. Figures marked as to be confirmed will be added once they are checked against official sources.

What Does a Fine Artist Do?

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Developing ideas through sketches, studies and research before starting a work

  • Producing paintings, drawings, prints or sculptures in the studio

  • Choosing materials, surfaces and mediums, and testing how they behave over time

  • Photographing and documenting finished works for portfolios, sales and applications

  • Applying for exhibitions, residencies, open calls and grants

  • Writing artist statements, pricing work, and speaking with buyers, galleries and curators

  • Balancing creative time with the admin of selling, accounts, supplies and studio upkeep

Where They Work

Most fine artists in India work from their own studios at home or in shared studio spaces. They sell through art galleries, art fairs, online platforms and direct commissions from homes, hotels and companies. Some are represented by galleries in cities with active art scenes, such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Chennai.

Others work within institutions: art colleges and university fine arts departments, schools with art teaching, museums and cultural centres, design and advertising studios, and public art projects run by city bodies. Teaching and design work are the most common ways artists earn a steady income while keeping their own practice going.

How to Become a Fine Artist in India?

After Class 10

Build a daily drawing habit. Keep a sketchbook, take up painting in one or two media, and visit galleries and museums where you can. A school art elective or a weekend art class gives a useful head start.

After Class 12

Apply for a fine arts undergraduate course. Many BFA programmes accept students from any Class 12 stream, but each college sets its own rules. Prepare for its aptitude and portfolio test, which is usually the main selection step.

Undergraduate

Complete a BFA, usually about 4 years, in painting, sculpture, printmaking or applied art. Use these years to build a coherent body of work, take part in student exhibitions, and learn studio practice and art history.

Postgraduate and Specialisation

Many artists take an MFA, usually 2 years, to deepen a specialism and develop a personal practice. An MFA is often expected for teaching in art colleges. Some artists also apply for residencies or postgraduate programmes abroad.

Teaching Qualification (if needed)

Art teaching in government or private schools usually needs a B.Ed or the relevant state teacher eligibility test. This is not needed for studio practice, selling work or private classes.

First Job and Building a Practice

Start with group shows, open studios, residencies and small commissions. Build a website, a portfolio and a record of sales and exhibitions. Early on, many artists earn through studio assistant roles, teaching or freelance design work.

Eligibility and Subjects Required

Scope and Future of Fine Artist in India

Demand for fine art in India has grown with a wider base of collectors, art fairs and online sales platforms, although sales remain concentrated among a small group of established names. Most working artists earn from a mix of sales, commissions, teaching and design work rather than from a single source.

Growth areas include contemporary and digital art, public art and murals in cities, art for hotels and corporate spaces, and art education. Auction houses, galleries and biennales bring new artists to wider attention, so building relationships with curators and dealers is part of the job.

Support for the arts in India comes mainly from national and state academies and cultural bodies, such as Lalit Kala Akademi, which run exhibitions, awards and fellowships. Abroad, artists move through residencies, MFA programmes and international fairs. Visas, living costs and building new contacts are the usual challenges, so planning ahead helps.

Fine Artist: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I become a fine artist after Class 12 in any stream?

Most fine arts degrees, including the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), accept students from any Class 12 stream, so Science and Commerce students can apply. What matters more is your portfolio of drawings and paintings and your result in the college's aptitude test. Check each college's prospectus, because eligibility rules and subject requirements differ from one institution to another.

Do I need a degree to work as a fine artist?

No degree is legally required to paint, sell or exhibit art. However, a BFA gives structured training, regular critique, art history and access to college shows and networks that many artists value. A degree matters more if you want to teach in art colleges, where a postgraduate qualification is usually expected. Self-taught artists can succeed, but they need to work harder at building a portfolio and contacts.

How do fine artists earn money in India?

Most artists earn from several sources at once. They sell original works through galleries, art fairs, online platforms or directly, take commissions for portraits, murals or corporate spaces, teach art in schools, classes or colleges, and do freelance illustration or design. Income is irregular, especially early on, so a steady second source of earnings helps artists keep their practice going.

Is fine art a stable career?

Fine art is less predictable than salaried careers because income depends on sales, commissions and exhibitions, which can rise and fall. Many artists build stability over time by securing gallery representation, repeat collectors and regular teaching or design work. Planning for lean months, keeping records of sales and building savings are practical steps that make the career more sustainable.

What is the difference between a BFA and an MFA?

A BFA is an undergraduate degree, usually about four years, that builds foundation skills in drawing, painting, sculpture or printmaking. An MFA is a postgraduate degree, usually about two years, focused on developing a personal body of work, research and critique. An MFA is often needed for teaching in art colleges and helps artists who want to deepen a specialism or show internationally.

Do I need to be an excellent drawer before applying to a fine arts college?

You need to show clear drawing and painting ability and a sense of your own ideas, but you do not need to be a finished artist. Colleges look at your portfolio and aptitude test to judge observation, composition and curiosity. Skill improves quickly with daily sketching, drawing from life and studying artists you admire. Start building a portfolio early, even before Class 12.

Can fine artists build a career abroad?

Yes. Indian artists work abroad through artist residencies, postgraduate programmes, international art fairs and galleries that represent them overseas. Visas, the cost of living and building new contacts are the main challenges. Applying early for residencies and MFA programmes, keeping a strong online portfolio and learning about overseas art markets make the move more workable.
